The Packer game last night should have told us something.

It pains me to say this, but they are in a prime spot for a playoff berth and this while playing behind an offensive line that is as bad, if not worse, than the Bears.

We’ve all blamed the bulk of our offensive woes on the O-line, and they have certainly deserved our criticism, but all teams have problem areas, the organizations who are worth their salt figure a way around it. Lovie/JA have never been able to do that.

Compare the Packer offense, again, with a terrible offensive line to the Bears.
QB att comp yds comp% yds/att TD TD% Int Int% Long Sack/Lost Rating
Cutler 421 261 2814 62.0 6.7 17 4.0 20 4.8 71 25/162 75.3
Rodgers 380 249 3136 65.5 8.25 22 5.8 5 1.3 74 44/260 104.9

M. Forte 634 yards rushing (3.4 ypc) 4 TD’s
R. Grant 890 yards rushing (4.3 ypc) 5 TD’s

Receiving stats (Top 6 receivers for each team)
Bears 242 catches 2,674 yards 14 TD’s
G.B 202 catches 2,657 yards 14 TD’s

This tells me a few things. First for those of us who have cut Jay Cutler a LOT of slack, look what Aaron Rodgers is doing with an equally bad, if not worse, OL. He’s been sacked almost twice as much as Jay and is still having a Pro Bowl type of season. Second, Matt Forte has to run harder and make something happen despite his line. I’m not saying he should be leading the league in rushing, but Ryan Grant isn’t exactly the second coming of Walter Payton either, but he’s doing it behind that terrible o-line.

Lastly, this all goes back to coaching and management. As I said earlier, all teams have issues, but the good ones find a way to overcome. Look at the Packers less than two years ago, the Favre fiasco, Grant’s holdout, a terrible Defense. This year a new DC with a completely new scheme that shouldn’t really fit the personnel they had, but is doing a great job and a QB that doesn’t let getting sacked give him an excuse to throw picks in groups, especially in the redzone. Our receivers are young and still learning, but they have not been the achilles heal that some people try to make them out to be and with another year’s experience, they could be considered one of the bright spots of the team. Our coaches/managment don’t force behavior and foster that accountablity you need to overcome your weaknesses. Sorry for the rant, but I watched a team I hate last night at least look like a professional football team against a decent opponent. I really can’t say that about any of the Bears games this year, in fact, the majority have been embarrassments, even the last two wins.

Just a little nit picking

But Green Bay does not have a horrible offensive line. They ARE horrible pass blockers, but they are very good run blockers. Their adjusted line yards is 5th best in the NFL.

fair enough but the point about Cutler still holds

Rogers is getting killed out there but still performs, yet Cutler seems to be folding under the pressure. He has to take responsibility for that, but it also falls on the coaches being better at putting him in more favorable situations, holding him more accountable for mistakes, and doing a better job of coaching him up.

by BearFan611 on Dec 8, 2009 10:00 AM CST up reply actions

Difference is

that Rodgers takes the sack, Cutler doesn’t!!! How many times would Cutler have been sacked this year if he would have took the sack instead of trying to make a play and forcing something? Probably more than Rodgers!!

by McRipper on Dec 8, 2009 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

The talking box in my car

was comparing the two QB’s a while back. They basically said they were polar opposites. Rodgers held on to the ball too long and needed to take more chances and Cutler needed to be more conservative and take the sack every now and again. That the two QB’s needed to meet in the middle somewhere.

FWIW. I thought it was interesting.

That is interesting!!

That’s the issue!! If Cutler didn’t take the chances he takes and got sacked more, then people would complain that he needs to throw the ball more. It’s a catch 22!!

I think many of you are missing my point...

this wasn’t supposed to be about Cutler vs. Rogers, rather a statement about the total futility of the Bears which goes right to the top of the organization.

It’s easy to say IF we had their receivers, or IF we had a better defense, or IF our running game were better but guess what….WE DON’T HAVE ANY OF THAT!!!!! We have what we have and the Bears management and coaching staff are the ones responsible. My point was that even with a bad offensive line, their scheme, or coaching, or whatever has the Packer offense at least looking like a professional football team. They completely revamped their defensive scheme and that unit is playing well despite the fact that the personnel weren’t drafted or hand picked the way we supposedly have for Lovie’s defense.

And, yes, Jay Cutler does have to answer for some very bad play that has little to do with his recevers or blocking, but too many fans and the coaches just want to keep making excuses or play the “what if” game. This is an immensely talented player who needs better coaching. You can’t write off 4 years of college and 4 years in the pros and never been part of a better than .500 season as coincidence or completely due to factors outside of his control. I’m NOT completely blaming him, but you also can’t COMPLETELY absolve him either.

He needs to have better coaching and support available to him, but then he also has to be willing to take it and not just keep making the same mistakes he’s been making. If that’s the case, we gave 2 first rounders for Jeff George. We won’t know for sure until the McCaskeys step up and get a management team in place that can do the job.

Cutler made bad decisions when well-protected and throwing to good receivers.

Whose fault was it then?

by Velveeta on Dec 8, 2009 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

He wasn't losing those games for denver

Back then he was the vocal point of that offense. He threw over 600 times. their running game sucked. Its easy for the D to know what a one-dimensional offense is going to do.Cutler made some mistakes but he won them games.Despite the D being one of the worst if not THE worst that year

Difference here is that we have almost nothing. The worst O line ever.WRs who are inexperienced and inconsistent and an idiot OC.And we are LAST at rushing.Jay has NO help at all.He is like Farve he is a risk taker. If Orton was still on this team he wouldn’t last the season cause our O line is the worst.Cutler needs help he doesn’t have it now.

So the defense was the reason...

…he threw into triple-coverage when he had receivers wide open? That doesn’t make any sense. Are you saying he panicked, and that it’s somehow an excuse?

He did lose games for Denver. Jay Cutler gift-wrapped one of the Chiefs only two wins last season. The Broncos only scored 10 points against the Raiders (the other team the Chiefs beat) at home.

I will give him this: Cutler’s receivers last year were better able to make up for his bad decisions, so a throw into coverage was more frequently an incompletion or even a catch, rather than an interception. In fact, a lot of Cutler’s highlights were actually poor decisions redeemed by his receivers. So I don’t think he’s any worse this year- just exposed for what he is.

You’re right that the Bears have a lot of problems, and that it’s unfair to blame Cutler for them all. But when people talk about great players, they talk about the ability to elevate the players around them. I didn’t see that from Cutler in Denver, and I have yet to see it in Chicago.

Read the Angelo Promises article

Well skip the article (it will make you throw up a little in your mouth listening to this douche bag)

Read the comments after it. The fans have a thing or two to say on their opinion of him. I hope JA reads them.

i would like to thank you for directing my attention to the comments

those were priceless. and yes, i hope JA reads them as well, not like it would accomplish anything.

oh can't we all be happy?

we won a game. the world is such a happy place. don’t you think?

Funny

This article proves that Angelo really is delusional as to what is going on. Maybe the city’s extreme hatred of him has driven him nuts. But let’s face reality, we are stuck with him and his staff, ie. lovie, for a long time. The sacrificial lamb will be Turner and Hamilton but not Lovie or JA. I honestly believe that Ted Phillips doesn’t even watch games because if he did then he would see the same garbage we see every Sunday.

by frenchbears113 on Dec 8, 2009 9:45 AM CST reply actions

i think firing ron turner is

the first step in fixing this organization, start with the most pressing issues and work your way down.

by Da Sassage on Dec 8, 2009 12:26 PM CST up reply actions

I would consider

A defense that gives up 30+ points in the first half and is the worst in the league on 3rd and long, and a GM who cannot draft or sign free agents pressing issues.

Sexy doesn't deserve more reps.

He will still unleash the dragon even if they game him 50% of the time with the starters.

by ANYTIME09 on Dec 8, 2009 1:26 PM CST reply actions

two things

First, I cannot say this enough, but that article about Lovie talking about Weis just confirmed what I thought even more: CHARLIE WEIS IS THE RIGHT FIT AT OC FOR THE BEARS!!!!!!!!!!

Second; it’s been fun watching Rex play, and not in that smug way Broncos fans like watching Cutler throw picks. I always geniunely liked Rex, I just couldn’t stand him playing for the Bears. Against TB he threw some bombs for the Texans and it was fun to watch. They call a lot of people “gun slingers” but Rex really embodies the whole throw shit up there mentality of one. UNLEASH THE DRAGON!
