The 2009 NFL Draft: The OT Prospects

I have the pleasure of writing this post, as well as upcoming posts, highlighting the top Offensive Line prospects for the upcoming draft.  Like ChiFan, I watch an unhealthy amount of college football.  And I am an outspoken supporter of drafting an OLineman in the first round in April.

I loved the mentality of the Bears last year, drafting OL in the first, and I hope that mentality carries over to next year.  If Chris Williams is able to play, and we draft an immediate starter in the first round, that would be a 40% upgrade to our Offensive Line.  We need that badly.

Regardless of how bad we need a QB better than Orton, no matter how bad we need better Wide Receivers, no matter how bad we need a compliment to Forte, no matter how bad we need pass rushers on defense (which I think Marinelli will use what we have and make that happen), no matter how bad we need to improve our secondary... IT ALL STARTS UP FRONT WITH THE BIG GUYS.  And anyone that thinks we are set at OL is crazy.  Kreutz and Tait have been playing ball since the 70's for Chrissake...

Enough of the jibber-jabber, let's take a look at the top Offensive Tackle prospects:

Star-divide

MIchael Oher, Ole Miss, 6'5", 320lbs

Oher is an absolute beast.  People who have seen him play immediately notice his size.  But it doesn't take long to notice something else:  his footwork.  Michael Oher has amazing nimbleness for an Offensive Lineman, which often times enables him to reach the Linebackers before they can even get moving.

He has awesome run blocking abilities... which was the biggest part of Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis gaining over 1,000 yards in both 2006 and 2007.  Pass blocking:  also amazing due to his ability to move laterally very quickly.

And one other piece of info... he has never had an injury.  Ever.  I watched Oher over the last 2 years, and was never able to find a flaw.

The only thing I have been able to find that was said negatively about him was his strength needed to improve.  But the minute a professional strength coach in the NFL gets a hold of him, that won't even be a factor.

Awards:3 time All-SEC, 2 time All American.

Highlights (pops anew)

Andre Smith, Alabama, 6'4", 345

Another big fella.  Like Oher, Smith has exceptional footwork.  And he is very quick.  There have been tons of talk about his athletecism... I heard a story about him playing basketball and dunking all over folks, but haven't been able to find hard evidence of that.

Andre Smith, like Michael Oher, will be a keystone to someone's offensive line for years to come in the NFL.  He has great durability... has only had one minor injury in college: an ankle that kept him out of 1 game.

The only thing of a concern about Smith: he was suspended for last year's Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.  I remember as quickly as it was announced, it disappeared from the media.  Speculation was that he made improper contact with an agent... a big no-no when you are still on a collegiate roster.  But I don't think it was ever determined exactly the infraction... regardless, it won't be an issue to the big league.  From what I have read, he is a great kid.

Andre only allowed one sack all this season, and only 7 over a 38 game career.  My math tells me that is less than 1 every 20 quarters of football.  With his size and strength, that will carry over to the NFL.

Awards:  SEC Jacobs Blocking Trophy, Outland Trophy, finalist for the Lombardi Award, 2007 Coach's All-SEC, Alabama's Offensive player of the year in his sophomore season.

Big Block (popsies)

Eugene Monroe, Virginia, 6'6", 315

Going with the growing trend of offensive linemen in the NFL, and as mentioned with Oher and Smith, Eugene Monroe is a huge player with amazing agility and footwork.  He will be seen on someone's starting line-up for years to come.

Monroe has top-grade pass blocking abilities... gives up very few sacks, and has several "knock down blocks" per game.  I've seen Eugene in several games over the last couple of years, and he always stands out.  Initially for his size (specifically height), but he just moves so fluidly on the field.

A very gifted athelete, Monroe has all the tools necessary to be an elite Offensive Lineman in the NFL.  The only concerns I have heard on him is his strength in his legs, and the fact that he pulled out of the Senior Bowl.  Some say he was a bit banged up, but it would have been the last opportunity for him to show his stuff before the combine.

All in all, Monroe will be another Offensive Tackle that will make an immediate impact for someone this upcoming season.

Awards:  2nd team All-America, Jacobs Blocking Trophy, All-ACC

Highlights (clickety pops)

Jason Smith, Baylor, 6'5", 305

Jason Smith has had an interesting collegiate career.  He played tight end his freshman year, converted to OT, and had injury issues in 2007 that raised questions in people's minds about his ability to play at the next level.  Well, 2008 put to sleep all of those issues.  Smith started every game, and helped the Baylor Bears increase their rushing yards by 251% from 2007.

Smith is a very intelligent person, and will pick up very quickly even the most complex blocking schemes in the NFL.  Having experience at TE, he has developed very good footwork at the OT position... he moves laterally very well and is quick to get to the ends in pass blocking.  Jason is also known to put in tons of extra practice and study time after hours.

There are a couple of downsides to Jason, but nothing that will keep him from being a big contributor in the NFL.  He doesn't have a lot of experience at OT... having only started 19 games total.  Also, his weight is not yet where it would ideally be for some teams who have gigantic OLines.

Smith is being said by many to be the best OLineman prospect in the upcoming draft.  I don't think so, but he has always been one to exceed others' expectations.

Awards: 3rd team All-American, 1st Team All-Big 12,

Interview (up pops the click)

As far as sleepers, honorable mentions, and OT's not on this list, I thought I'd leave that up to you guys and gals to bring to light.

All 4 of these prospects will be able to make immediate impacts on their prosective teams, and I have a feeling 3 of them will still be on the board when we pick at 18.  I have read comments by a few of you that think all of the good linemen will be gone by the time we pick, but I disagree with that.  The top 15 or so picks will be chock full of big-name, non-OL players:  Stafford, Crabtree, Maclin, Sanchez, Wells, Moreno, Curry, Maualuga, Maybin, Laurenitis, etc.   Hopefully, we jump on an OLineman when we get the chance.

Offensive Guards and Centers to come soon...

the tackle class is so deep

we can draft a lineman who doesn’t have a history of back problems and concentrate the rest of the draft on playmakers. Great Post!!

I like OT in 1st

I think that drafting an OT in the 1st is definately the way to go. I would also like to see them use their 2nd on the OL as well. I like Unger or Robinson in Round 2 and one of them should still be available. I think that building the line during the early rounds of the draft this year will not only allow us to concentrate on tweaking the skill positions in free agency and next years draft, but will lay the foundation of this team for years to come. It all starts up front.

Oher

IS an absolute BEAST of a man.

He’s a “plug this guy in for 12 years and forget about him” kind of a player… that’s the kind of player that helps win Super Bowls, and INSTANTLY makes us a better running team and a better passing team, and by helping us gain time of possession even helps the D face one or even two less drives a game.

I would trade up to get him.

Great post, GB

Two things

1) Todd McShay’s draft has Oher falling below #18. Looking forward to my peppermint.

2) Is the order you have them the ranked order?

1.) I would give you 1,000 peppermints if he falls to us.

2.) After reading your question 3 times to figure out wtf you were asking (lol), the answer is “no”, no particular order. (maybe biased, but not ordered)

1) I hope you have a Sam’s Club membership, in that case. I like the green peppermints, BTW.

2) Who do you think is the top OT prospect?

But the minute a professional strength coach in the NFL gets a hold of him, that won’t even be a factor.

You sure about that? Do you really think that a big-time college football program does not have a professional strength coach?

I really think that

NFL strength and conditioning coaches are far better than their college counterparts. My logic only being that they are in the NFL, which is as high as they can climb. My logic being that there are thousands of theses coaches in the college ranks, and only 32 in the highest tier of the game.

But just my logic…

by Dane Noble on Feb 11, 2009 10:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

well...

… if you only think that there are 32 good strength coaches in the country, than your logic might work.

We are talking about the SEC, arguably THE premier football conference in the country. They all have very good, very legit, very professional strength coaches.

The difference between an NFL strength coach and an Ole Miss strength coach would very probably be minimal in the impact it would have on Oher.

I never said that there are only 32 good S/C coaches in the country.

But you know that.

So we will just agree to disagree. Thank you for your insightful comments.

Not a quality of the coach, but he has more time.

I think the bigger issue is that in the NFL, all the player does is work. NFL Strength coaches have a lot more time and access to players than their counterparts in college, from what I’ve heard. No restrictions on practice time and all that.

good players

but not going to be there at #18 IMO.

andre smith = 2 birds with 1 stone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PgdAQkq4gI&feature=related

I’m not opposed to an OL in the 1st, but feel like it focuses too much on the OL. You mention that adding an OL prospect plus Williams would be a 40% upgrade. Even if that is true do we NEED a 40 % upgarde? feels like doubling down on the 20% (WILLIAMS!) has yet to prove he can provide. The context of letter grade appeals to me in this case. Say our OL grades out as a D- 60% last year, then doubling down on OL makes some sense, but then u factor in Williams 20% improvement which puts us (predraft) at at B- 80%.

Yes having a quote unquote 100%+ OL that dominates would be cool… but if OL is a B (assuming Williams makes it on the field at least) then bumping the unit up to an A will have less impact than adding a stud to the WR or safety positions which rate D-s at best. simply i’d rather turn our Ds into Bs or greater than a B into an A. especially since jumping up from B to an A is harder to do and gives the bears even less room for error with the 1st rd pick. If JA picks OL in the first round and misses again he is writing his own ticket out of town….

the letter grade analogy may not be the best, but using it helps (me) appreciate the positions of need on the depth chart. If only there was a consensus or we could get a peak at Lovie’s notes/grades.

Bengals and Rams...

seem to be the two logical destinations for OT in the top 10. I don’t see more than 2, TOPS, being available at #18… there are big “names” in the draft, but names tend to fall when tested and graded, and these lineman will grade out higher than most of those names…

Either way, I like getting to an A+ line this year… if we can have a top 10 run game, our pass game will improve automatically, even without a HUGE splash (FA, or #1 pick on WR) made with a WR. So I like the idea of going OL here, but only if one of the true studs is there at #18 (and I do think Oher will be).

Ds to As

No it all, your idea makes sense but what happens next year? Tait is declining and so is garza an kruetz, so the B we would have this year will suddenly be a 40% F. We need to get the best O lineman we can while they are available. If there are really 4 very quality starters out there in the first wouldn’t it make sense to grab one and be set for years? Besides O lineman tend to have longer more productive careers than skill players.

best avail.

if we were picking 1st and debating between the best at each position…. but we are not. at 18 we must go for best avail. 4th/5th best OT v. 2nd/3rd best WR not best wr v. best ot… this is where the rubber will meet the road so to speak.

WR, S, RB.

i'm not crazy about drafting a WR high

mostly because they usually take a long time to develop, and we need help pretty immediately in other areas. of course, i’m not that confident in angelo upgrading the unit through FA, which would be the smart move…don’t need tj, boldin, etc., but we need to land at least one decent WR. maybe draft one lower (3rd round) and let him develop…usually takes 2-3 years for WRs. i’m a fan of drafting an OL or S in the 1st round, though…maybe those should be our top 2 picks.

We could go after Edgerrin James for RB...

He is expected to be cut by Zona, and would be a good back to get 6-8 carries a game when Forte needs a breather.

couple of things about a couple of things

lots of OTs going early in both mocks. i agree.

my new thing is that we need to move up to get Crabtree. According to realgm Seattle will take Crab at 4 if he is there. KC looks like they might want to move down. Thigpen’s no Orton and all, but they might be ok standing pat with Thig and unwilling to spend that pick on a QB. if we could swap 1st rd. picks with KC (maybe they get Sancez w/ our 18) and we give them _ as well? (Madlibs time… maybe Tait and 4th rd pick). We get Crab and then draft OL 2nd round. Best WR (and many say overall player) and we may still get to pick a guy from the same pool of OL talent we were looking at at #18 in the 2nd at pick #50.

Hakeem Nicks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_aMQ2R7dYQ

i hadn’t seen much but i think he’d be a reach at #18. similar but less than anquan boldin. maybe in the 2nd rd. nicks v. harvin. harvin. i “project” harvin to be similar to santonio holmes and unlike nicks has gamebreaking speed and return ability.. harvin at #18 and herman johnson in the 2nd would be good.

Nicks

is interesting. I see his name all over the board. It is hard to guess at present where to slot him.

But if we swap with KC this year,

We might have an even lower pick in 2010, then we might have less of a chance to grab Tebow.

2nd: Trade Tait? He’s in his 10th season… I don’t think we’d get much value out of him.

Things will get better as they improve...

by Dane Noble on Feb 11, 2009 12:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

To move up to 4

the Bears would have to give up this year’s 1 AND 2, AND next year’s 1 or 2, depending on how desperate KC to get out of that slot.

The 3rd pick is worth 2200 points on the trade value chart. The 18th pick is worth 900, and our second rounder is worth 400. Tait has about 5th or 6th round value on the trade market.

For all practical purposes, the Bears cannot trade into the 3rd pick. It’s not even a remote possibility.

I like Nicks. I think the Bears are drafting in the wrong spot to take him. He seems like a late 1st/early second guy. Maybe they could trade back and pick up an extra second rounder—not a bad idea considering all the holes we have to fill.

Specifically, we need a RT

Since we are penciling in Chris Williams as the LT. Left Tackles are generally quick pass blocking specialists. Like Williams and Tait, Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith are not especially strong or efficient at run-blocking or moving the pile. Oher and Smith seem to have the whole package and could play RT; but IMO, will be the first 2 chosen, well before the Bears pick at #18. There are 2nd round ROT prospects Phil Loadholt, Duke Robinson(OG/ROT) who could also easily be gone by the time we pick again at #49. I’m not too sure who else could project to RT, but Jason Watkins, 6’6" 317lb OT from Florida could be a good choice in the 4th round to develop. Tait has 1 year left and could be cut, resigning St. Clair and moving him to RT could be an option or gettin a FA(Stacey Andrews?) would give him a year or 2 to develop. I think another reason these college kids all get stronger by working with NFL strength coaches is they arent spending the majority of their day doing college work, either studying or partying.

by gillrowdy on Feb 11, 2009 1:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Would love to find a solid run-blocker to replace Tait at RT

But, I’d much rather find a monster Guard, who can do all the dirty work in the run game… and let St Clair compete with Tait at RT.

Of course… we can always sign my man Vernon Carey.

signing Carey would be huge

solve the o line before the draft. Williams last year + Carey=solid and substantial enough of an investment in OL… allowing Bears to draft best available in the 1st rd. similar to ATLs signing of Turner allowed them to draft matt ryan, not mcfadden…. not to mention they traded back into the 1st to get an O lineman….

I love the thought, but...

…do we really think that many of these guys are going to last all the way to 18? I know it doesn’t seem like a lot of teams want OL help, but I think these guys are too talented compared to the players at other positions for them to just continually slip. Teams can always use good tackles, and I doubt they’re all going to fall.

I mean, look at last year—a lot of teams took OTs, even if you wouldn’t say that tackle was an obvious need or even their biggest one. I think the same thing will happen this year, because I think the OTs have more value than the skill position players. So, I’m not optimistic about a tackle sliding down to us.

by TCBullfrog on Feb 11, 2009 3:43 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

You are right about last year...

There were 7 OTs in the first 21 picks. And 8 total taken in the first round. I still have to think that at least 2 of these players will be available when we pick. Plus, we haven’t even looked at the OG’s or Centers yet (soon to come)

I would love Oher

I would love to get Oher, and if he falls to 18 I think the bears have to take him. However, with Williams on the roster someone has to move to the right. Williams seems more of a finesse guy so leave him at left and move Oher to the right. He would just destroy people on the right side and avoid some of his shortcomings. But I think that would force the Bears to go wide receiver in the second. Meaning we don’t address the d-line, or secondary until the third. Maybe Byrd from Oregon for some depth. You have to make a decision of what need is more pressing in 2009. I think our o-line can do it one more year with Tait but right tackle and/or guard needs to be addressed in the first two rounds this year or else we play catch up with a very old and inexperienced (if that makes sense) line in 2010. So the need at o-line doesn’t take an instant starter for this year. I’m sure the Bears won’t do what seems sensible so who knows what they’ll do. My perfect first day, Maclin, Loadbolt, and Byrd to start day two. Three needs addressed and with quality players.

Eben Britton is another quick, finesse blocker that projects best as a LT

and is rated a bit below the top 4 OTs already discussed. Smith or Oher would be the best fit for the right side IMO. Duke Robinson could also get some consideration if he can elevate his draft stock at the combine enough so it wouldn’t be such a reach. I think he could play OG or RT and really help the run game and short-yardage situations.

Big ?

I read where Oher has work ethic problems. He just takes a lot of plays off. Seems like he dosen’t have his heart in it. People are calling him a Boom or Bust proposition. Question is do you want to chance a first round pick on a guy who might just take the money and slide by each year. AKA Cedric Benson

I love Oher, but ...

Anybody out there read “The Blind Side”? Written by the guy who wrote “LIar’s Poker” and “Moneyball,” it examines the recruiting process of major colleges, focusing on one player and everything he goes thru. That one player: Michael Oher. And folks, he’s really, really dumb. As in, they had to set up plays with traffic cones for him, because he couldn’t understand the playbook.

Will that hurt his NFL career? Maybe. I know I wouldn’t want to be his position coach.

Your reply button is fine. It doesn’t need to be replaced, just used frequently for maximum performance.
