Free Agency and Draft Player Updates

Wcg_bullet_medium
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially told Jeff Garcia that he is no longer in their plans. Any takers or are you settled on Chris Simms?

Wcg_bullet_medium
Based on the Bears history of drafting the strongest player at their biggest position of need, this writer thinks the Bears will look strongly at Vontae Davis out of Illinois.

Wcg_bullet_medium
Just to throw another log on the running back fire. The Jaguars have released Fred Taylor. Any takers on him as a backup?

Wcg_bullet_medium
Julius Peppers has said if he is franchised he will immediately ask for a trade. If the Panthers want any value out of him, they need to tag him and make the trade. If they do that that reopens the possibility that Jordan Gross gets free. I don't think they will look at either, but I'd like to think the Bears are keeping an eye on this one.

Would be interesting if they drafted CB Vontae Davis

As a way to fix the safety position… by moving Tillman to FS.

I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

Yeah....

We have to fix our OL and WR’s before we settle for that.

Not a good idea

Didn’t Davis get benched by his coach for most of last year? I would think this is a pretty big red flag, especially in the first round.

most of last year?

he got benches for 1 quarter of the first game of the season. like ron zook could afford to bench any decent player, let alone a guy projected to go in the first round.

My bad

I thought I read somewhere that he got benched for longer.

Yes & No & Yes & Yes

Garcia – Yes

Davis – No

Taylor – Yes

Peppers/Gross – Yes

I agree...

except with Garcia. Depending on how much he wants he could be an asset.
And the Bears should be all over Fred Taylor, He has mastered the 2 back system with Jones-Drew.

by jeepdays on Feb 16, 2009 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

He said he would do whatever the team wanted him to do as far as starting...

He will probably go to the Vikings though, because he knows Childress from Philly and they have a better O-Line and a credible deep threat in Berrian. Plus, no matter what he says I know he wants to start, and there is absolutely no depth in front of him in Minnesota, also I don’t see any of these FAs beating out Orton.

Taylor would be a good fit

I like him, and if he’s okay with being a secondary back he could bring a lot to the table.

Either Gross or Peppers is worth looking at. If John Tait does retire, Gross would be a good fit. I don’t know how much Carolina would want for Peppers in a trade, but if it’s a 1st rounder and some filler I’d do that.

Oh, and I don’t like Garcia. I think he needs a particular type of coordinator/head coach running a particular type of offense to succeed, and I don’t think we have that staff. I think we’d get more Cleveland Garcia than Philadelphia Garcia.

He would also be able to mentor Forte,

He is 16th on the all time rushing list, I am sure there is some things that he can show Forte. Plus he is a big power back, just what the Bears need.

The Panthers have to

get Gross to sign before this happens. From what I have read they are still no where near in terms on numbers. If they can’t sign him do you tag him or Peppers? You know Peppers wants out, but if you tag Gross you cannot tag him again next year. He is unrestricted and I don’t see why he would sign even give them the time of day considering they had 2 years to work out a deal and could not.

It will be interesting to see how they handle it.

Gross

If they can’t resign him by the 19th, I’d imagine they’d have to tag him instead of Peppers. He carries more value, and is the more consistent player overall. Next to QB, LT is the most important position on the field.

Garcia is a "system" QB

who can only function in an offense designed by Mike Holmgren. The only good years he had his HC was an ex- Holmgren assistant in SF with Mooch, Philly with Reid, and Tampa with Gruden. Does anyone remember how bad he was with the Browns and Lions?

Garcia – No (Simms, meh at best)

Davis – No. I never like seeing CBs (or WRs) go in the first round

Taylor – Yes. I can’t believe I’m saying that.

Peppers/Gross – Yes please.

Garcia:

Garcia would be a big improvement over Orton..Garcia is Mobile and has the ability to make things happen..And has a better long ball than Orton,he just might be able to hit Hester in stride or at least get it somewhere near him..Wouldn’t mind seeing him get a one year deal.

I wouldn't mind signing Fred Taylor

reminds me a lot of TJ

Gimme Fred Taylor

I just don’t think Garcia improves the team. He does have some good qualities and several poor qualities. I think you have a better chance to win this year and next with Orton.

The Bears and Taylor are perfect. He doesn’t get more than 10 carries a game so he doesn’t break down and hes a power back which is exactly what we need. Good fit for both parties.

I would love to get Peppers or Gross but I doubt we end up with either. Just not J.A.’s style.

As for Davis, I don’t think he’s an instant starter at corner. McShay says hes the most difficult player to gauge in the draft this year. It doesn’t sound like he would improve the team immediately which is what the Bears need out of this years draft. However, just heard Chris McAlister was released by the Ravens for cap room. Don’t know a lot about him other than hes a former 1st round pick and stud. Could he be a stop-gap for the secondary while Davis develops. To put it in perspective, Vasher, Graham, McBride, at corner. Payne, Manning, and Steltz at safety. And i’ve heard Davis could do safety or corner like Tillman. Can we find four quality starters in that group?

Wouldnt mind seeing Garcia compete for the job

but I cant imagine any reason why he’d chose us over the Jets or Vikings mainly. Or even a full circle tour with SF.

Gross and Taylor

If somehow they could sign Gross to long term deal – I believe he is only 28 years old. This would free up a draft pick for a playmaker. Taylor would be great. but he is old and he has already turned turned down the Jaguars pay-cut proposal. A one or two year deal for a reasonable amount (what ever that is? LOL) would be preferable.
