attemting to fix the defense through free agency
Other than in the first or second round finding a starter in the draft is difficult especially on defense, so here as some musing as to how we could improve our d through free agency.
Sign michael boley or bart scott who i believe should talke urlachers spot. an idea that many believe could be prudent due to briggs' awesomeness and urlachers declining play, however, i disagree with most of the people that believe we should trade him, when it is obvious what we should do with him, shift him to the spot hillenmeyer couldn't keep and nick roach won by default. I think this switch will solidify our lb core and help our woeful secondary.
speaking of the secondary the bears brass are gonna need to be creative with who they bring in considering that other than Nnamdi Asomugha the free agent pool is luke warm. so I think we have to take some chances, specifically on leigh bodden, recently discarded by detriot. bodden who just as recently as 2007 had a 6 pic season, and I know he didnt like merinelli's tampa 2 but our scheme is much different often leaving cbs on an island with only one saftey covering deep which is similar to what bodden had in cleveland.
And to help shore up the saftey positions the only name that could possibally help us is jermaine phillips of the bucks, he has experience in the cover 2 and is a better than average at creating turnovers, he would fit nicely on our d.
so what do you guys think?

Chris McAllister...
the 11 veteran cornerback was just released by the Ravens after a couple down injury-plagued years.
Asomugha would be ideal, but I’m just throwin McAllister’s name out there.

big fan
always a red flag when a seemingly good player gets released…. but I’ve always liked McAllister since his days at Arizona. if hes healthy he is better than any of our CBs. we have so much $ tied up in Tillman and Vasher that something(one) would have to give
any recent news on OAK resigning Asomugha because signing him would be a major coup for the bears. just another high stakes bidding war the Bears are going to be getting into this off-season.
the list of decent FAs (released by their teams) will get a lot longer as we approach FA because teams are feeling the $ crunch.

What other
high stakes bidding wars are the Bears in, and who said the Bears would be interested in Asomugha if he does hit the market? The Bears have two highly paid corners already, a couple promising young guys behind them, and corners aren’t at a premium in the cover 2. There is no way the Bears pay a FA corner the $8-10 mil a year he’ll want. No way.
McAllister got released because his body is breaking down and he was due a huge salary that he no longer warranted.

tired of having to connect the dots for everyone
the bears will not be part of [m]any high stakes bidding wars. i was being sarcasm.
if Asomugha hits the market every team in the NFL will be “interested”.
good points about the Bears’ other corners… too bad i already brought that up by referring to the big $ we have already devoted to the position.
highly paid does not = good

The only high stakes wars they've been in
are the ones with their own players. :)

maybe you mean
you were being sarcastic, not sarcasm.
Every team will be interested, but the Bears will only be interested in the way a married man would be interested if Angelina Jolie became available. Being interested and having any thoughts of persuing him are two very different things.
Last, having 2 highly paid corners, whether they are all-world or all-crap, will probably preclude signing another highly paid corner. It’s simple cap economics.
You brought up Tillman and Vasher’s money, but then still suggested looking at McAllister or Asomugah, and said “something will have to give”. Well, yes. The something that will have to give is the pursuit of a highly paid corner.
If you are always having to “connect the dots” for people after you post, maybe it’s because your posts are either unclear or uneducated.

CB is not where the big money goes in the Cover 2 defense.
In theory, the CBs are interchangable parts…. they play zone coverage.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

I like him too
and was actually gonna suggest him but I found something on rotoworld about how he has bad knees and I wouldnt want to take a chance on a player that is both old and injury prone.

I believe
we can get by with the CBs we have. We need to upgrade at SS.

if we can’t get a pass rush no back field can hold up forever!

“We certainly have nowhere to go except up!” is an assertion, not an opinion.
it is entirely false.
ie 100% NOT TRUE.
to say your comment lacks insight would be an understatement because it is total BS. (normally i type that out but you and chifan would wet yourselves)

Then I should have started or ended my assertation with

I love Boley
but I honestly don’t think he could be a MLB. In fact, at the end of last season, he got replaced on 3rd downs by Coy Wire, that’s how much they were disappointed in his pass defense.
I wouldn’t mind getting Scott and playing him at OLB until Urlacher’s gone, but I don’t want to tie up so much money at LB when we have many other positions we could fill with the money he would warrant.
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad

just to clarify...
1) assertions can be opinions
2) BS can be insight, as my wife says…
But I agree with No It All on the comment that our line was the absolute worst, because it wasn’t. The line can get older and not be able to stop the run, ever. The problem includes the players, but the defensive scheme employed last year was predictable and caused a lot of the flaws. I have a hard time imagining so many good d-line players all dropping off in the same year…and put a majority of the blame on Bug-eyes Babich. Or, deer-in-headlights Babich.
When you stack the line, that causes max protect, and leaves your secondary on an island. You can stop the run, but if teams start to keep more blockers in, and your LBS can’t get back in zone quick enough…that allows for more openings in the zone.
I do believe Marinelli can motivate, but more importantly I pray nightly that Lovie will stop stacking the box with 7 EVERY down. Once in a while, but having Urlacher up in the center’s face didn’t help at all. The entire defense seemed to lose confidence in the scheme as the year went on, and other teams salivated.

Just to clarify...
but he said the pass-rush had nowhere to go but up, which is true, I believe they had less than 20 sacks on the year and most of those were against the Rams, which really doesn’t count.
He didn’t say that our line as a whole couldn’t get worse, like at stopping the run, in which they could.

Anybody?
Have Tillman take over for Mike Brown and the Bears go after a new corner? I know that our coaches have already said Tillman is staying at corner but since when do coaches tell the truth?
