Mock Draft - William Beatty
It has been a while since I posted a mock draft. This one is a bit different than the bulk of the ones I've seen. I expect we will see more like this with the news that John Tait is expected to retire.
Round 1: William Beatty, T, Connecticut (6-6, 306)
Offensive tackles never last long on draft day, and now we see six come off the board in the top 18 picks. Even though the Bears went with OT Chris Williams last year, former starter John Tait has announced his retirement and John St. Clair is scheduled for free agency. The pairing of Beatty and Williams gives the Bears a chance to bookend tackles for the next 10 years.
Strengths:
Terrific size with a large frame...Excellent athleticism...Light on his feet...Real quick and agile...Terrific footwork...Mobile enough to pull and get to the second level...Slides well laterally...Outstanding balance...Redirects well...Does a real nice job of sustaining his blocks...Superb pass blocker with the ability to handle speed off the edge...Smart with good awareness...Solid intangibles... Still has upside.
Weaknesses:
Needs to get stronger...Could stand to add some weight...Is not overly powerful...Doesn't get a great push in the run game...Can be bullrushed and does not anchor well...Does not use his hands well and could improve his overall technique ... Has some minor durability concerns.
--from NFL Draft Countdown
Round 2: Duke Robinson, G, Oklahoma (6-5, 335)
The kind of big, physical lineman the Bears love in their power-run scheme.
I'm a bit torn on this one. I don't know either player well enough to knock them on their ability or their weaknesses. I do like the idea of drafting line, I think I would like them to look to fill a skill position with one of these picks. I don't mind them bringing in line help, but I'd still like to see them do some work here in FA. Having what is potentially 3 rookies (I'm including Williams) working the line could be bad for Forte and Orton.

Just thought i’d drop in and say that i didn’t vote because I’ve never heard of either of these guys.. You should have put up some stats ht,wt, and maybe some numbers from this past season. Myself I don’t want either one in the 1st rnd.. Neither one of them had a season of playing power house Ds.. Who knows how good they will be in the NFL! I would rather give up our 1st pick for Gross or another vet at a skilled position that needs filled. Like somebody said before “our 1st rnd picks are never that good.” Then if you wanna draft a T of G of this caliber do it in a later round. Anyways if they are unable to get gross, an unproven T/G thats been in the league 2 or 3 yrs and isen’t askin for a the big dollars seems more ideal for what we need.. They need to be lookin real hard at the least of FA Gs and Ts next Friday..
oops
I didn’t see the one guy went to Oklahoma I thought he went to Duke but thats his name.. Lol my bad.. On a guess I’d say Duke Robinson is the better one just because he played for Oklahoma…
umm...
… huh?
I guess Mark Bradley is good too, because he went to Oklahoma.
What a strange way to evaluate a player.

umm..
How else would you evaluate 2 players you haven’t seen much of?? I have no numbers no height/weight.. What would you suggest?
I guess AP is good too, because he went to Oklahoma.
Todd Boeckman = this years sleeper QB!!!
Firstly, they are linemen
so they won’t have much in the way of stats.
But I could have put up their height and weight if that helps. The link to the site can also be used.

My way of thinking is
If you don’t know much about them, and have no opinion, then why even drop in to say anything?
Things will get better as they improve...
Fair point
I’d be more interested to read the strengths and weakness than their size.

Don’t OL have stats like sacks allowed and pancakes?

6 OTs
if we take the 6th Tackle at #18 i’ll be pissed. As much as we need OLine help taking the 6th best at his position with #18 is a desperation reach for a position of need when the first or second best WR/G/S/LB/CB is on the board. to some extent there are “tiers” of talent, maybe this class of tackles is that deep (at least 6 Tackles worthy of 1st round), but i doubt it.
I would be happy if the Bears drafted Duke Robinson in the 1st, so getting him in the 2nd would be great. at #50 there will be OLine talent (maybe Loadholt) so i’d like the bears to go best player available in the 1st round and go for needs in the 2nd and on.
Yeah, that makes sense
In this mock draft, Robinson goes to us in the 2nd. But sure, let’s waste our 1st rounder on a 2nd round talent.

ME u
do you honestly think i care at all about persuading you? plus i don’t even know what I’d be trying to persuade you about as you haven’t said anything relevant. the only thing your comments share is you ridiculous assertion (contrary to mine, which is vastly more credible on the issue, which is my own state of mind) that you think I will not be happy if the Bears draft Robinson in the 1st. that is retarded and good luck with that.
lol
When did I say that I thought you would not be happy if the Bears draft Robinson in the 1st? After all, you said:

in his defense...
He never said robinson at 18. Id happily take him at 24 or around there… plus a second or third!
I've seen Duke play 3 times
I am in Missouri and the Tigers play Oklahoma. Duke is a manster, and I saw him and Ziggy Hood (who is a good NFL D-Line prospect) have a couple of absolute wars…with Duke beating Ziggy most of the time.
I don’t know about strengths or weaknesses, I just know he held the opponents he had against him in check when he played the Tigers (who, admittedly, are not a defensive powerhouse).
We need
a RT. A RT needs to be powerful more than quick. He needs to be an effective run blocker first, an effective pass blocker second. Most of the best pass rushers are at the right DE, because they can attack the QBs blind side. The LT needs to have quick feet and be a good pass blocker to deal with the constant pressure. The RT, on the other hand, doesn’t generally face as much pressure, so needs to be able to drive off the ball and make a lane for the RB. He needs to be able to stop the pass rush as well, but that is more a secondary requirement.
So when I see a mock where the Bears take the 6th best OT as their future RT, and the guy’s scouting report states that he lacks power and run-blocking ability, I question how much knowledge the person making the mock has about either the Bears needs or scouting of offensive linemen.
DEJESUS!!!
Well...
By the looks of things a good wide receiver prospect should be available at # 18. I would think Jerry Angelo will try to address the need for Offensive Tackle via free agency, and by bringing back John St. Clair. I don’t think Jordon Gross will be the answer. Probably somebody cheaper and who falls in the category of “project.”
Way too many critical needs this offseason to think 2009 is going to be a good season. Wow.
Great.
Address our OLine by signing a project-FA. Sounds like something the Bears would do…
Apply directly to the Forehead…

if theres one thing that Angelo can do right, it’s getting good linemen in free agency

Never started for us....
Started 15 games for the bucs in 07….
Can you learn a new blocking structure in a few weeks?
I'd Rather Take the best avilable player
Than the 6th best olineman at 18. We have enough needs where you take the best available player (Unless its something we don’t need like a TE). And I think Jerry and Lovie will feel that way too, especially because they tend to delude themselves into thinking we’re a good team because we finished 9-7. But personally, I’d rather see us take the 2nd best receiver or 3rd best CB or S than the 6th best OT/OG. Heck I’d even be ok with taking the BEST center in the draft than the 6th best guard.
Again I think the Bears should look at Robert Brewster the RT from Ball State. He’s big and powerful and he can run and pass block. The biggest concern is that he didn’t play out of a 3-point stance in the spread offense.

Too early
It’s going to be a huge reach if JA picks one of these guys when they can probably get a quality RT or G in the 2nd. Depending on what he does in FA at WR/RT will determine what the #18 pick will be. Taking the best player available is always the right move, and neither one of these guys will fit the description.
"I'm not so mean. I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something." - Dick Butkus
This makes no sense...
William Beatty in the 1st, who’s weakness is run-blocking, really. Have the guys doing this mock draft never seen the Bears play, Forte was in the top 5 in carries last year, it would be stupid for the Bears to draft another pass-protection O-Lineman in the 1st, when they are a running team.
I like the Duke Robinson pickup though, but he is not going to be available that low.
Seriously?
This mock would make more sense if the Bears picks were reversed. There’s a better chance Robinson goes in the first than Beatty. And really? Two line man with the top two picks? I guess I wouldn’t complain but I just don’t see that happening. I agree with the best player available in the first. There should be plenty of right tackle prospects available in the second, Meredith, Loadholt, Boone, maybe Beatty or Britton. Resign St. Clair and give that pick a year to get ready. Then you can slide St Clair inside and hopefully Beekman will suffice as Kruetz replacement.

That does make much more sense
But would St. Clair be an upgrade over Roberto “All-Madden” Garza inside?
by isrealidonije on Feb 17, 2009 6:24 PM CST up reply actions
I like Beaty
but thought he was more of a LT (and still a project at that). I had him at late 2nd-early 3rd, so this is quite a bit of a reach. I’m a big fan of Robinson, so getting him in the second sounds great (I still think he’ll go late 1st though).
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
Not a Robinson or Beatty Fan
I would like the Bears to trade down if possible to anywhere lower in the First round, if they could do it twice that would be even better. I think that there will be plenty of good DEs left toward the end of the first round(i.e. Larry English from NIU) and a really good OT and OG available in the second and third rounds (i.e Troy Kropog from Tulane, Max Unger, Oregon, who can play any position on the line, Kraig Urbik from Wisc.). With the pick or even better “picks” they get trading down the can draft a WR and S. They really dont even need to address the WR position until round four anyway. I think Both Aaron Kelly from Clemson, (a lot like Plax, w/o the leg wound) and Kenny McKinley from South Carolina will both be available and are extremely underrated.
