Why I don't like Chris Simms

Chrissimms_medium

I have seen a lot of people showing interest in Chris Simms over the past few weeks, especially after he has apparently shown interest in the Chicago Bears back.

However, just look at his stats in years where he wasn't average.  He had one year where his QB rating was over 65.

l don't trust him to help the Bears and I don't see what everybody else trusts.  If I had a choice, I would happily take Kyle Orton over the underachieving Chris Simms.

If he comes to the Bears  and turns out to be great, I want everybody on this site to come, find this post, and rub it in my face, and I will happily take the criticism.

However, I find it much more likely that, if Simms does become a Bear, the Bears either don't start him, or he is a major flop.

This is a win-win

Simms was stuck in two positions in which he really couldn’t win (in TB, it was being involved in Gruden’s QB circus; and Tennessee, he had to beat out Kerry Collins and Vince Young).

He’s a better backup than Sexy Rexy. If he even comes in on that basis, he’s fine.

totally against it

i went to school with chris simms cousin (who ironically was maurice clarett’s QB in high school) he told me straight up the good/bad in chris’s mechanics. to be honest he sold me into believing chris is not the answer to in Chicago. maybe somewhere that doesn’t use a west coast style system.

well in that case...

You should get Angelo on the horn and let him know that you sort of know a guy who went to school with Chris Simms, and he doesn’t like his mechanics. Hurry, before Jerry signs him!

I don't think

that he would be doing a service to himself or the Bears if he were to be signed. I love competition and I have even said that I was fine with bringing Simms in before, but I don’t trust him anymore.

My problem with Chris Sims...

is he’s not Phil Sims. I don’t want to throw out the term sloppy… you know what’s but if we get him doesn’t it feel that way??? I’m trying to wrap my mind around QB’s who’s fathers were great and the sons who are just as great. Maybe some one will say Archie and Peyton and Eli, but was Archie really as great as Peyton? I would say it doesn’t happen often.

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

I'm not saying simms will be a bad QB

I’m just saying he’s not a good fit for the bears

I think that five games is a fair assessment

of how a Quarterback is. Three games is a trend, and for some, it’s enough to get benched. In fact, in his three game season he had more attempts than in his five game season (106 to 73) and he had seven interceptions in 106 attempts, I would say that that was a very very bad stretch of games. Also, if you notice, outside of his one season where he had more touchdowns to interceptions, his ratio has been 2 TD’s, 10 INT’s. Even Rex Grossman plays better than that.

If 5 games

is enough to make a determination on a QB, then Rex is a hall of famer. At least in the first 5 games of 07.

by tomas21 on Feb 18, 2009 5:47 PM CST up reply actions

so...

… outside of the one season where he got consistent playing time over an extended period of time, Simms wasn’t very good in very limited sample sizes and in relatively sporadic play.

Again… let me introduce you to sample sizes.

I have no idea how it is relevant that Simms had more attempts in his 3 game season than his 5 game season. What is your point?

You probably thought Neifi Perez should be an all-star too. And that Tuffy Rhodes would be a hall of famer. And that Rex Grossman was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

I don't know why anyone would want Simms.....

instead of Orton.

I think

people are grasping at straws because Orton is a pretty underwhelming option at QB. Orton’s upside is an average NFL QB. It’s not necessarily wanting Simms, it’s that he’s someone else.

Lets face it

Orton is going to start and Simms would be a backup. I personaly would like to see Hanie as #2. He has had a year to learn the system let’s give him a chance. I thought he showed potential in last years preseason.

by luckie815 on Feb 19, 2009 6:19 AM CST reply actions

Hanie did well last pre-season

against 3rd and 4th stringers. I am with you in hoping that he gets more reps this preseason, and hopefully does well enough to be a solid #2 this next season.

by Dane Noble on Feb 19, 2009 8:51 AM CST up reply actions

He stays third string

or gone. He looked good against 3rd and 4th string guys trying to make rosters.

by tfrabotta on Feb 19, 2009 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

We will

do well enough next season that we are not going to get a high draft pick to get a franchise QB. We need to give these young guys a legit chance and if they don’t cut it get rid of them and get some more. That’s the only way we are going to find the next Warner or Romo.

by luckie815 on Feb 19, 2009 10:06 AM CST reply actions

The Bears were already looking at Warner and Romo...

But, they had no clue the potential was there anyway….
Warner was invited to Halas Hall in 1998, and Romo played nearby at Eastern Illinois.

J.A.

can’t draft them. They have to be walk on’s that hit him in the head with a good spirole. Then he can go DUH. I got that guy.

by luckie815 on Feb 19, 2009 1:41 PM CST up reply actions

I know we need OLineman

But if Sanchez is there at 18 we have to take him. That is the best value we can hope for at that spot. All the OT and WR with 1st rd value will be gone. Sanchez will give us the best value at that spot. Or we trade down and get someone we want but I don’t to reach for anyone.

by tfrabotta on Feb 19, 2009 11:53 AM CST reply actions

I don't think all of the

immediate starting OT’s will be gone by 18. There are too many skill position players, and big name linebackers and DE’s

by Dane Noble on Feb 19, 2009 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

I am for best available

I just don’t think that any OT or WR that will be left are worth our 18 unless we get lucky and someone falls. Harvin?- no, Oher? -no, DHB? – no, too much risk with all of them. I am all for the DE out of Fla St or Maybin if they fall but we need value. I just don’t want to settle due to need. I think Sanchez (even though probably not our biggest need) would be the best value.

by tfrabotta on Feb 19, 2009 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

Talk about risk.

I think Mark Sanchez would be a huge risk at 18.

Yeah

I agree. We need OL help or a WR. Drafting a QB at #18 would be the beginning of a disastrous draft.

by ChiFan13 on Feb 19, 2009 12:21 PM CST up reply actions

He is a 94 grade we would get at 18

Any other 94’s out there at 18?? I dont think so. Would you rather take a risk on a franchise qb vs a heyward Bey who could be the next troy williamson? I agree we need OT help but there is no value left at 18 unless you want to risk it on Oher. The other good OT’s are gone and we would have to reach to get one. The other only other position we should look at with potential value here would be DE. If they could get Maybin or the kid from Fla st I would do that first. Outside of Crabtree or Maclin I wouldn’t touch a wr in rd one. I just don’t think that LB is a need area until next year. We have depth there with Williams, HH, etc. We need value for this pick. I don’t want safe if it means pulling up a second round pick to fill a need..

by tfrabotta on Feb 19, 2009 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

Keep it in context, fella

Sanchez is a 94, that’s great. That’s also ESPN rankings!

Look, Sanchez is going first round because there is a lack of any solid QB’s in the draft this year. Josh Freeman is being talked about as a 1st rounder! He, in the words of Charles Barkley, is turrible. Just turrible.

Especially...

since he has only started like 18 games. He couldn’t even beat out John David Booty, come on. And he is supposed to have questionable arm strength. If the Bears get a QB, I want him to have a big arm, so we can take advantage of Hester’s one talent.

Yeah

I don’t disagree with everyone that we need Oline first. But if you stay at 18 there will just be no value on OT when our pick comes around. Same thing at WR after Maclin.

sigh

1) You said he was a 94 and he’s a 95. C-

2) I disagree with what GB says. These folks who make the big bucks also brought us such household names as Michael Haynes, Rex Grossman, Cedric Benson, I can go on and on.

by ChiFan13 on Feb 19, 2009 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

So because

they raised last weeks 94 to a 95 that changes the reason why it is good value at 18? How is that a C-?? But we should take Heyward bey at 18 and he becomes troy williamson becuase he can’t catch or run good routes but he is fast.

Well

he looked good to me on tv and the talent evaluators all have him grading out high. They know more than me. If I was drafting at 7 would I risk it?? No. But 18 seems to be good value. Is he even throwing at the combine?? I am guessing not and will probably perform at USC’s pro day which will be set up for his benefit I am sure.

First let me explain something

if you delete one comment, it deletes all the comments attached to it.

Two comments were deleted that were deemed to be inappropriate. If that caused some by you and others to go away, I apologize, but I’ve been very clear on what types of comments cannot happen and these comments went outside those limits, so they were removed.

how the last two deleted violated any rule. is “bush league” a swear now?

by mike b on Feb 20, 2009 9:53 AM CST up reply actions

A comment doesn't have to be a swear to be deleted.

The 2 comments you are referring to were not part of the “string” but were still considered as part of the conversation that was deleted.

The purpose of the deletions was both content related and to just shut the whole argument down. The 2 comments afterward were delted not because someone disagreed, but rather because they were just a continuation of what had already been deleted.
