Angelo speaks...and you won't like it

from the SunTimes Bears blog:

"Angelo reaffirmed what we've thought for some time, that the Bears are going to be bargain shoppers if and when they venture out into free agency"

"Angelo said he's counting on coaching and attitude making the team better in 2009, specifically the defense."

"He acknowledged the Bears have more holes to fill than in the past"

"Basically, Angelo put it on the players to make the defense better and admitted it will not be the unit it once was."

"Asked if there was a solution to the safety problem in free agency, Angelo started talking about Craig Steltz, the fourth-round pick from last year that the Bears hailed as being a "starting caliber'' player" (barf)

"There are going to be more positions that we're going to have to look at this year in the draft and free agency and we'll just see what we can accomplish, if nothing else create better depth and/or competition if we can't get a for sure, frontline player so-to-speak."

This does not sound like the words of a man who recognizes the serious problems on his team and is taking action to fix them. It sounds like the words of a man who thinks he already put a contender together, and it's the coaches/players fault for not executing. Either that or the purse strings have been tightened and he's not allowed to spend money.

Every time this guy talks I just want to vomit. He's over his head in his position and it shows every time he speaks.

Gotta Link?

Are all of the quoted sentences in the first part of the post Lovie’s quotes?

Things will get better as they improve...

I think they are all Angelo quotes

It’s from the “Inside the Bears” blog on the sun times. The post is something like “angelo to do bargain shopping” or something like that.

I posted the link into your article

I usually feel sick whenever I hear Angelo talk too…..glad to know there’s not something seriously wrong with me then.

Wait and see

I’d think having 2 WR, 2 OT spots open, and 1 FS spot open that JA would fill a position or two in the draft. There’s no way he can fill all those holes come late April.

Lovie and the players

Can be blamed to an extent for not being consistent last year, but seriously Jerry? Come on man

They need RT, WRs, and Safeties...

And there’s only one impact player available in FA at those positions (TJ Housh). What did you guys expect?

At safety

Gibril Wilson, Jermaine Phillips and Sean Jones are all starting caliber, above average safeties. They are more strong than free safeties, but they have the skills for either, but even if they couldn’t play free they’d be an upgrade over Payne.

At RT Khalif Barnes is still available. Mark Taucher, Stacey Andrews and Marvel Smith are coming off injuries, but are big upgrades over what we currently have. At guard Jason Brown, Jahri Evans and Mike Goff would be upgrades.

At WR pretty much any WR would be an upgrade. Housh obviously, but also Bryant Johnson and Ronald Curry.

Well... let's break this down.

At safety, only Jermaine Phillips has been playing in a Cover 2/Tampa 2… and he’s 30 years old already. Mike Brown’s 31… I’d rather have Brown back for a 1 year deal than over-paying for Phillips.
Gibril Wilson might be the best player at a young age (27), but I don’t know if he has the skillset that Lovie looks for.

At RT, Khalif Barnes gave up 7.5 sacks last year, and was whistled for 9 penaltlies. Mark Taucher tore his ACL in December, and he’s 32. Stacey Andrews tore his ACL AND his MCL, and likely won’t be ready by opening day. And, Marvel Smith is 31, and has chronic back problems that made him miss 15 games in the last two seasons. No thank you to all of them.

At WR… you know what junk is out there. The Bears wanted no part of Bryant Johnson last year in free agency, and Ronald Curry is a 30 year old underachiever.

Barnes

should not be a LT, he has difficulty with the edge rushers which causes both the sacks and the false starts (because he tries to get a jump on the quick ends—not that 9 penalties is that terrible). But he had the highest YPC behind him of any LT in the league, so he is a pretty dominant run blocker, which suits him for the RT. I think he has the skills to be one of the top RTs in the league, and he’s young, so I think he would be a huge pickup.

Mike Brown’s age is not the problem, it’s his injury history. He was getting hurt too much when he was 27 or 28. Phillips is not too old to play another 3 years or so at a productive level.

How does Jerry still have his job?

I really hope that he is trying to pull a Bellichek, and that he is flat out lying about what his plans are.

Surprisingly bad move

Drafting Bauzin was a mega-reach with disastrous results, and JA followed it up with another in Wolfe. How can you draft a guy with no idea how to use him? No real plan either?

Free-agency will yield at least one signing for the Bears. They have way too many open roster spots to feasibly fill in just the draft.

although Daniel Manning and Devin Hester were pleasant surprises..

Ugh How bad do we have to be before

We open up the damn wallet and pay for known talent. This bargain shopping means that there is no chance of a Boldin deal (Probably not even a damn phone call to even inquire) probably won’t bother with Stacey Andrews or Housh. All the wishful thinking gone. Here comes Jerry Porter, Bobby Engram or Amanti Toomer.

by Sam Householder on Feb 22, 2009 7:27 PM CST reply actions

Toomer is better than anybody on roster (WR) except Hester.

It wouldn’t be a terrible idea, considering the Bears may draft DHB in 1st round. Easy solution to their WR problems.

Yeah I guess

I was just trying to pick old and crappy receivers from the list of UFAs.

The pool of available free agents is bad

This is Jerry Angelo’s way of saying the Bears aren’t going to find a lot of answers in free agency. He speaks the truth. Bears are in for a rough 2009. Simple too many holes on this team that need addressing. Even if the Bears have a great draft its wishful thinking to say a lot of rookies will make impact right out of the box.

if there is one guy i want at safety

it’s matt giordano of the colts. he’s the fastest man in the nfl. he reminds me of a smaller john lynch.
