The Vikes have their QB
According to the Houston Chronicle, the Vikings will send their 4th rounder to the Houston Texans for Sage Rosenthals. He was a target for the Vikes last off-season but they balked at the Texans demands for a 2nd round choice. I am surprised the Vikings would settle this early on in the off-season for a guy who should be a back-up QB. Though it is possible they could kick the tires on a better option like Matt Cassel or Jeff Garcia, it would be a waste of a 4th round pick to spend it a vet back-up like Rosenthals when you have something simlair in Ferrotte. Honestly I doubt Rosenthals is that much of an improvement of Ferrotte and Jackson as a starting QB to warrant giving up a 4th rounder. Rosenthals and AP on the same team makes them the overwhelming favorite to lead the NFL in turnovers. Because of this, the FA QB market just got more buyer friendly which could help us land somebody like Leftwitch at a good price to compete with Orton.
Thanks to the incomptence of the Vikings front office, maybe we do have a chance to win the North in '09.

Laugh all you want, but fact is the Vikings will remain superior team in NFC North
Vikings are a definite couple steps ahead of the Bears. Brad Childress seems to be doing quite fine in Minnesota. Sage Rosenfels has the upside potential to be something better than our Kyle Orton. I also wouldn’t go writing off Tavaris Jackson.

I agree
Everybody seems to laugh about Sage Rosenfels but forget that he gets to play the Bears “great” pass defense twice. When you have a running game like the Vikings do, there’s not much you need at QB.

He played o.k. at times. But great news for the Bears nonetheless. It is always good to see our sworn enemy taking a step back.

I don’t really get it when you say that this is a “step back” for the Vikings. Sure, it’s only a side-step (definitely not a step forward) but a step back?? Hardly. How is this making the Vikings any worse? It doesn’t make them much better IMO, but it doesn’t make them worse.
Plus, this is still speculation. You can all make your “LoL, ViQUeenS SuCk, OmG” posts when its officially reported.

Ferrotte
Might retire. He is super old and if they are bringing in a younger version of him so he could be hanging it up. I definitely think Jackson will be there opening day starter.

Rosenfels
almost took Schaub’s job lat year until a late-game meltdown. He is a pretty good passer and is certainly an upgrade over Tavaris Jackson or maybe even Frerotte. He’s not an elite QB by any means, but I think the Vikes just got better.

Two answers
Of course with the disclaimer if the whole Rosenfels thing actually goes through:
- I think this marks the end of Gus Frerotte’s “triumphant” return to the Vikings. Tarvaris and Booty aren’t geriatric, and Rosenfels would most likely make too many cooks in the Minnesota Kitchen of Quarterback Mediocrity.
- I’m assuming it would be an open QB competition for “who can suck the least and hand it off to an overworked AP 400 times with the fewest complications”. That said, I’d put the early odds on Sage unless he’s too turnover-prone or if Jackson really imp…(giggling)…impro…(giggling more)…improves this offseason. (Sorry, couldn’t get through that sentence without laughing.)

I’m always willing to offer up insight about my team to rival fans, as long as people don’t mind some sarcasm thrown back and forth—I’m incapable of writing more than 3 paragraphs without some smartass getting through. At least the Vikings are doing something about the QB position.
Unlike the Bears. This is the type of creativity I want to see from the Bears: go trade for someone.
"You win because of the quarterback. We have to get that position stabilized. We're fixated on that.
We know it's the most valuable position on the football team. We've gone through so many scenarios at that position we can write a book, moreso on what not do."

Well, Sackman, here's some trade creativity for you:
The Cowboys need a new back-up QB, as Johnson was released. And they are supposedly shopping Roy Williams around.
We send them Cannon and a 2nd round pick in 2010, and get Williams.
If Roy has more than 2 personal foul penalties, the pick gets dropped to a 3rd.
Things will get better as they improve...
