Bears Make Offer To John St. Clair
Terms are not disclosed, but hoping to keep John St. Clair from hitting the free agent market the Bears have offered him a contract sometime in the last 48 hours.
Given the Bears history I wonder what the chances are they didn't try to lowball him. And, given the contracts signed by Jordan Gross and Vernon Carey, I'd have to imagine his agent would be trying to base offers off of those deals.

I'm hoping we get him signed. We need him.

Last time I checked...
You actually have to have two tackles to play football… and we only have one.
St. Clair isn’t the greatest in the world, but right now we need to fill a slot and we know exactly what he is and where his head is.
Hopefully it is a good offer for both sides and he signs.

He's most likely going to play LG, not OT.

No, your mistaken. Right Tackle.

No, he was going to play LG...
before Williams got injured, he might have played himself into RT, but he is a guard

why would he play guard
we are set at that spot with beekman. we don’t have a right tackle

initially he was going to play LG
but then Tait decided he may retire. Now we need him to play RT.

I Hope It's Not Gross/Carey Money
Because I am not sure he’s worth that much. But we do need him and he deserves a nice fair deal.

Rotoworld
says it’s a 3 year/ 5-6 mil per offer. I sure hope that’s not true. that’s way too much for a guy who doesn’t excel at any position.

WTF? You can't be serious. How could the Bears be that dumb.
A bunch of idiots. If you’re gonna write up that contract, give it to someone else.

The Bears better get lucky, and pray he turns that down to test the market.
HE’S ONLY VALUABLE TO THE BEARS… because they’re desperate.
The rest of the NFL doesn’t reward 32 year old career backup tackles with 5-6 mil/per year deals.

Andrews has a torn ACL and MCL.
That’s info I wasn’t aware about in January.
No thank you

Why do all you people think St.Clair is so terrible?
Because he got beat by Jared Allen and Julius Peppers? Who doesn’t get beat by them? John St.Clair is pretty damn solid and versatile. We need him, big time.

He's 32...
And he’s NOT SUPPOSED to be a starter. He was only a starter last year by default, because we stink.
If he gets that contract, the first thing he should do is buy John Tait a new car.

you know the funny thing is
the O-Line was statistically shown to be terrible, but each individual is good according to peeps here.
maybe the coaching is the problem!

This Morning
I read the Raiders cut LT Kwame Harris. Now they are going to be looking for a tackle in the draft.

I'd much rather give St. Clair's offer to Harris or Khalif Barnes.
The Bears wanna give a 32 year old crappy LT, $5-6mil a year… to play RT. What a waste of money, when they can give the same off to a 26 or 27 year old crappy LT (Harris or Barnes), and ask them to play RT.

Save the Money!
Use that money to bring in Stinchcomb from the Saints or Ray Willis form the Seahawks. St. Clair is a mediocre back up, there are plenty of O-line men out there, even in the draft, that would make a better right tackle in this league.

what he said
st. clair is not good. this team is so screwed.
by Hatchetm on Feb 24, 2009 7:50 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
How can you be so sure?
Besides he’ll probably end up making much less money than a tackle taken at #18. He struggled against two of the best DEs in football, which is certainly acceptable considering a rookie would be starting at both tackle positions.

Incorrect
Jeff Otah was taken at 19 last year and signed a 5 year, 14 mil contract. The speculation is St Clair was offered a 3 year deal worth 15-18 mil. Draft picks are cheap outside of the top 10.

St. Clair
This is what happens when year in and year out you neglect the offensive line in the draft. Drafting Williams was a good move but you don’t know what you got in him yet. It’s quite possible that the line is going to be worse next year. Now the Bears are forced to overpay St. Clair or get some bargain deal. This is looking rough.

I don't mind St. Clair
but at that money, hell no. The guy deserves a pay raise but that contract would be ridiculous. He’s a good lineman, not great. He’s in a good situation because the Bears are screwed and the free agent lineman out there are scarce.

question
would have rather drafted otah last year and now be lookign to draft or sign a left tackle in this group..
or do what the bears did, draft a left tackle and then be looking for a right this year?
i’d rather (and did then) have otah and draft or sign a left this year. especially if you’re using hindsight considering williams got hurt, although it shouldn’t have been a suprise.
by mike b on Feb 24, 2009 5:55 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Honestly,
being completely objective, Williams was a good pick at the time. He and Otah were pretty much the same.
Speculation is that JA knew about the back issue, and took a chance anyhow. I don’t think that is true, or he would have picked Otah instead.
I really think that CWilliams’ new back injury really was seperate from his college injury.
Either way, whether we picked Otah and he started, or Williams doesn’t get hurt… I am a firm believer that it all starts up front with the big guys. So the answer is yes, I think no matter how last year played out, we would still need another OT or OG in this year’s draft.
Things will get better as they improve...
by Dane Noble on Feb 24, 2009 6:18 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
the difference to me is
the bears are a running team, and they had the choice between a running right tackle and a finees left tackle. seems to me otah was a sure thing and williams needed some work and had injury concerns. williams signs a contract then gets hurt that afternoon; otah plays the entire year and contributes to a playoff team. eventhough that’s hindsight, it wasn’t impossible to see. i don’t think williams is so special they should have overlooked the things they overlooked.

Oher
Don Banks of SI. has us picking Britton at #18 and Oher is not even picked in the first round. He said it was because of character issues. Did I miss something the last couple of days.
