Laveranues Coles Released

According to the NJ.com, Laveranues Coles has been released from the Jets.

I believe this to be an actually decent option for the Bears to consider. He isn't a big receiver but he is a solid & productive player. He is 31 years old, which seems a lot better of an investment then a 36 year old Harrison. I think Coles, Hester, and perhaps getting a taller receiver in the draft (Heyward-Bey??) may really turn around the Bear's receiving core.

Your thoughts?

It makes too much sense

I don’t think JA will sign anyone based on his stance on the WR position. It’s obvious Coles would be better than Harrison at this point in his career. I don’t think the Bears will get into a bidding war for any FA. I hope I’m wrong!

Would be a nice option

however, if he is passing up on his $6mil guaranteed, he’s going to be looking for a pretty big deal. To be honest not sure what he is worth, but we probably wont go that high.

Ugh I wish

I have always liked him and I think he would be a real good addition. He has had inconsistent QB play most of his career so that would be nothing new. Definitely something we should pursue. Doubtful that would happen. Anytime any commenters/posters are excited you know that means it will never happen.

You really have a knck for words, ifuwanna...

But, assuming your comment is in favor of trying to go after Coles, I am with you buddy.

/ Won’t happen though
// I hate the relationship between FA and the Bears
/// Assume the worst, hope for the best?

Things will get better as they improve...

so... re: the draft

WRs may be a hotter commodity in the draft than previously thought. I think teams like the Jets, Colts and Bucs (galloway released) will be strongly considering WRs this draft season. What this means for the Bears? I don’t know. more WRs taken earlier may mean more Tackles on the board at #18. Personally I think WR is the biggest position of need and signing one of the decent (decent = better than what we got) FA WRS would allow us to go OL at #18 and maybe take a young WR at #50. That would be a big upgrade to our offense. Maybe another team will release a GM for us to sign cause the players are out there, i just don’t think JA knows who to get or how to get them.

This is excellent for the Bears....

It could help balance the market if they’re interested in either TJ or Coles, as before TJ had all of the market leverage.

"You win because of the quarterback. We have to get that position stabilized. We're fixated on that.

We know it's the most valuable position on the football team. We've gone through so many scenarios at that position we can write a book, moreso on what not do."

My thoughts exactly...

I was hoping we would see 2-3 big name receivers get loose for FA… just to smooth out the economic conditions. But, with teams getting used to the salary cap, they are able to keep more of their top-performers until the 34-36 age range, then release them. We’ve seen it a ton over the last few seasons.

I’m hoping a couple more studs go out to graze on the open market, just to, as you said, even things out a bit.

Things will get better as they improve...

My top FA's

At the receiver position would be T.J., Coles, and Hackett. If we can get ANY of these dudes we would be able to draft OL in the first and WR in the second, unless Maclin is available at #18, in which caase I’d def. wanna snag him.

I agree...

on Maclin, he is really the only player besides an O-Lineman that I would want the Bears to get at 18. He unlike DHB produced big time numbers in college.

by chase17 on Feb 25, 2009 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

I gotta go with Coles over T.J.

T.J. was always been second fiddle to Chad Johnson, even in college. He is solid, no question, a great upgrade for the Bears if they could land him, but Coles has always been the guy. On the Jets, Redskins, and Jets he was always the #1… T.J. has never been the number and frankly I don’t know how he’d handle it.

Like I said, I wouldn’t mind seeing how it would go. He might flourish, but b/w the two of them I’d like to see Coles over T.J.

i don't think he's getting a huge contract

very good receiver, but never thought of as a superstar…plus he’s 31, which isn’t old, but isn’t young. we badly need a decent WR (or two) to match up w/ hester, and have lots of cap space, so given the WR draft success:bust ratio, i think it makes a ton of sense to try to get him. obviously, not for an obscene contract (which i think TJ might get), but give coles a fair offer. overpay a little if you need to, because i don’t see him breaking anyone’s bank.

JA

is not going to spend over 1.5 mil. on a FA wide out.

by luckie815 on Feb 26, 2009 3:35 AM CST reply actions

Early rumors

are that Coles is heading down to Miami to play with his buddy Chad…

by torch on Feb 26, 2009 6:09 AM CST reply actions

Figured...

he would try to go there first. He basically threw a hissy fit when the Jets signed Favre and dropped Pennington.

by chase17 on Feb 26, 2009 6:38 AM CST up reply actions

That is what I figured

Miami or Philadelphia. He would also be a great pick up for the 49er’s, Titans, Raiders as well. He will have a lot of options hopefully the bears are at the top of his list.

by tfrabotta on Feb 26, 2009 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

This WR market is not to bad

TJ, Harrison, and Coles are all very good options that SHOULD be pursued. If neither are a Bear next season, then JA should be sacked

#34: You'll be missed!
