The Bears Den - 2/26/09
In the Den
A list of free agent options at offensive line for the Bears.
Yes, Rex will leave and many will rejoice, but here is one who thinks he never got the credit he deserved.
Departing QB Rex Grossman would be interested in playing for the Detroit Lions.

Sorry, I fell out of my chair there.
Could the Bears draft family? Jarius Byrd, the CB from Oregon, is the son of Bears assistant defensive backs coach, Gill Byrd.
Does Team President Ted Phllips really stand behind Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith or is this one of those he says he is behind them, to they will be gone next week kind of deals?
The Bears are closer to going to the cellar than they are ascending to the top.
Missy knows how to save the Bears. Unfortunately, it isn't going to happen.
Orton wants to prove he deserves to be the starter.
When your defense is so bad that Brian Urlacher is a viable option at FS, you might be a fan of a desperate team. The Den is thoroughly disappointed.
In the Vicinity of the Den
Though we had hoped it would happen last year and help us with our playoff chances, Kevin and Pat Williams from Minnesota are coming up on their trial date. If they receive what seems to be the common 4-game suspension it helps next year and depending on schedule we still may see the benefit in a head-to-head game.
This story only really goes here, because it reminds us of the game against Denver where Devin Hester ran two back en route to an OT win.
You asked for it, how does this work for you?
Nowhere Near the Den
The NFL salary cap has just been bumped up from 123 million to 127 million, so now Jerry Angelo now has an additional 4 million to not spend.
NFL Commish Roger Goodell is taking a voluntary 20 percent pay cut.

the best thing to happen to a cheerleaderless team.

The NFL
also bumped up the amount that team have to spend.
Angelo has an additional 4 million not to spend?
Well… not spending is what he’s good at… so at least he will finally be able to do a bit more of his time doing something at which he excels.
I would love to see Rex as a Lion. Seriously. Can you imagine his reception in Chicago? The mouth waters at the thought.
I want Orton to prove he’s the starter as well. Fair Dinkum.
About Rex not getting the credit he deserves… Ummm… he had the chance to step up and give us a Super Bowl win. It was in his hands. We all know what happened. EXACTLY what happened.
Why does everyone continue to place the "cheap" label on the Bears?
This isn’t the Bears of George Halas, who Dick Butkus once said, “Threw nickels around like manhole covers.” And, this really isn’t the Bears of Michael McCaskey, who was too cheap to retain players for the Super Bowl team.
This is a team run by Ted Phillips and Jerry Angelo with little or no interference from the family. And, over the Lovie Smith era, they’ve continually spent good money to retain their own players (Tommie Harris, Alex Brown, Lance Briggs, Brian Urlacher, Nathan Vasher, Peanut Tillman, Mike Brown, Devin Hester, Robbie Gould…), while giving Cedric Benson a $17 mil signing bonus, and signing a couple high priced FAs like Moose and John Tait.
If they were really cheap, half of those players wouldn’t be here.

I think a lot of folks are referring
to the cheapness in regards to Free Agency. You are right… the Bears have done a great job of rewarding their own. But at some point, they have to be willing to hit the market and write a few big checks… especially when there is no one left on our own roster to pay!
Things will get better as they improve...
We have discussed this before
and decided to break it down. The Bears are very good at signing their own and rewarding those that needed to be and weren’t asking for more than we value them at.
The problem is when there are wholes that need to be filled and the players aren’t on the team, they don’t spend money to fix that. They’d rather work through the draft.
Being Who You Thought We Were Since 2005!
I think they've used FA pretty well recently.
Big money at John Tait (with a poison pill the Chiefs couldn’t match)… was well spent.
Big money at Moose… was well spent.
Modest deal for Thomas Jones… very well spent
Modest deal for Roberto Garza… very well spent.
Modest deal for Dez Clark… very well spent.
Modest deal for Fred Miller… well, he started for our SB team.
Could they have done more? I’m sure they could’ve. But, bottom line is: they’ve actually spent wisely, and got good production from the FAs they signed. All the big money they spend is going toward rewarding/retaining their defense.

I see that list and I think...
well, we did just enough to get us by for a little while.
Things will get better as they improve...
I can agree with that...
But at the same time, that list was half our starting offense for our Super Bowl team.
The cycle just needs to be repeated. Unfortunately, the FA class is weak. So, why overspend on players who aren’t worth the money?

You are right...
That list does comprise a chunk of our Super Bowl team… which is why the cycle does NOT need to be repeated. We do not need to continue just floating along with our average offenses like we have for years.
This year’s FA is somewhat weak, you are right. But there are a handful of players that we should at least participate in pursuing. Maybe, get a big WR this year. And, maybe a QB or OT the next.
I’m not saying we can fix our woes in one year. And I’m not saying that we haven’t rewarded our own. I’m just saying that if we continue to do what we have always done, then we will continue to have the same results we have been having.
Things will get better as they improve...
You're right
My main beef is that with some of the big FA from years past; Faneca, Michael Turner, etc. the Bears never even blinked at bringing them in for an interview. It couldn’t hurt to just talk to the guy. That always rubbed me the wrong way.
I forgot Ruben Brown too.

… I was going to say something similar.
Anyone have a breakdown of Bears’ spending vs. the salary cap in recent years?
I would guess that there Bears didn’t leave much money unspend.

Not sure about that
Teams don’t usually win many games when their offense only scores 10 points. While the defense gave up a ton of yards they only yielded 22 points, which ole Rexy had every opportunity to put the Bears ahead when they were down 5 points. It was 22-17 forever, and I’m not sure what the Bears average field position was, but it had to like their own forty at the very minimum. The Colts made sure Hester wasn’t going to beat them, and it worked out perfectly for them.

I know i can't help it
You must have seen the marathon thread we had on “Lovie’s defense.” Don’t worry I’m done.

Nice Bears Den Logo!
I honestly don’t think the NFL has seen the last of The Dragon. I can’t imagine Detroit picking him up, but I could see him ending up on the east coast somewhere, and being half-way productive.
When I read the article about Urlacher moving to safety, I was confused. I have since re-read the article, and I am still confused.
Is that JLH in the too small Bears jacket?

In Defense of Frugal
I really don’t see any free agents out there that are worth a whole lot of money. Exception being T.J. Houshmandzadeh. I’d rather see the Bears use the draft and some under the radar free agents. The talent is not there this year – save our shekels for the future.

What about Jason Brown
He would be an immediate upgrade at guard 320# and played center the last two years. He is young and could step in for Olin soon.
Brown is going to command top tier money
And he’ll get it from a team who faces a lot of 3-4 Nose Tackles… which is a perfect lead to another comment:
We always struggle with 3-4 defenses. Partially, because we don’t see them very often. But, I also think it’s because Olin is average size at 292 lbs, and gets manhandled by those massive 350lb 3-4 Nose Tackles.
I hope the Packers don’t find their NT this offseason, as they transition to the 3-4.

My fault
for asking a question about who you might think would be an under the radar type player. Again my apologies for you making a statement that you have no intention on expanding on.

Stinchcomb is the name to pay attention to
If indeed New Orleans cuts him lose then I’ve got to believe Jerry Angelo will be VERY interested. Adding Stinchcomb would solve a huge problem.
