Simeon Rice To The Bears?

This just reeks of a Jerry Angelo move.  Defensive End Simeon Rice wants to make a comeback at the age of 35.  Rice played in Tampa Bay, so he has ties to defensive line coach Rod Marinelli, with whom he had the most success.

Rice suffered shoulder problems after playing in six games for Denver and two games for Indianapolis in 2007. The former Illinois star has 122 career sacks with 67 1/2 coming in a five-year run under Marinelli starting in 2001. Rice topped out with 15 1/2 sacks in 2002, the year the Bucs won Super Bowl XXXVII.

I think the Bears believe they are set on the defensive line.  We could have Mark Anderson, Marcus Harrison and Dusty Dvoracek as backups this year.  If we take care of Israel Idonije we have some decent depth.  That said, Rice might be hooked on one of those Jerry special one-year deals to see what he has left as a situational pass rusher.

What is your take on Rice?

well...

he couldn’t be any worse than ogunleye and probably cheaper.

Don't think he is really needed

Adding more old dudes to the defense is the last thing we need

by 815Sox on Feb 3, 2009 7:53 AM CST reply actions

Agree

we don’t need any more old dudes on D. and I don’t see Simeon Rice being able to make a bigger impact than anyone we currently have on the roster.

Also Agree

He will prob brake his hip if he trys to come back…

Get ready to be served rice

I’d bet a dollar to a doughnut Angelo will sign him to an incentive laced contract. If he works out Angelo will claim how smart he is and if he dosen’t he will claim were not out much.

If he's cheap enough,

why not rotate him in for some passing situations? Marinelli will automatically make our DLine more productive, and it wouldn’t hurt to bring in someone he’s familiar with. (again, if he is cheap enough).

Things will get better as they improve...

by Dane Noble on Feb 3, 2009 9:10 AM CST reply actions

I agree

if he’s cheap. It can’t really hurt all that much can it? If he gets like .5 sack then it’s a success that’ll be huge for the Bears front four! :)

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

You know I'm not serious....

didn’t you see the … :)
I don’t seriously think that .5 a sack = success. I’d like to see some actual production, if he can get consistent pressure and come close to his 12 1/2 that he had with Tampa then I’d deem it a successful pickup.

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

Yes,

In my opinion, Marinelli will make an immediate impact.

I have to agree

Marinelli was dealt a crappy hand with Detroit, but regardless, his reputation as a DL position coach is stellar.

I say...

Why not bring him into camp and see if he has anything left if it is all incentive stuff… worst case, you bring him in and cut him.

by sabbath999 on Feb 3, 2009 9:33 AM CST reply actions

Don't you think he'd want to play for a legitimate SB contender?

I can see him pulling a Charles Haley move…

Until I looked it up

I thought this was another Angelo bringing back people they all have connections to in the past. I realize Marinelli does but I thought JA may have brought him into Tampa. Turns out Rice came in in ‘01 Angelo’s first year in Chicago.

BTW... the title to this post is very misleading.

At first, I thought we signed Rice! Puke. You have to change that.

Bringin in RIce..

I believe it would be a waste of time.. This guy was in his prime 7yrs ago!! 7…. To me he is a last resort option for a team with injuries on the DL.. We should spend our time more on rookies and guys who still have potential! If they do bring him in he should be brought in to help marineli like an assistant DL coach or something, but not as a player unless we have DL injuries..

by ~sweetness~ on Feb 3, 2009 10:42 AM CST reply actions

Why not?

If he’s healthy and he can still get at the QB, bring him in if it’s a cheap 1 year deal. What do the Bears have to lose?

by McRipper on Feb 3, 2009 11:09 AM CST reply actions

To lose?

Time and money… You could sign an undrafted rookie who can get to the QB from time to time, and might break out to be a really good DL. AKA sleeper.. I also bet that an undrafted rookie would be cheaper!!!

by ~sweetness~ on Feb 3, 2009 11:34 AM CST reply actions

Well

that’s why I said, if it’s a cheap 1 year deal. What time? It’s a 1 year deal for a veteran DE that was once the best pass rusher in the league that’s very familiar with the Dline coach and the head coach.

by McRipper on Feb 3, 2009 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

Ya, but

How much better can you make a retired 35yr old man whos prime was 7yrs ago??

by ~sweetness~ on Feb 3, 2009 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

Who knows, but

if he is only situational maybe it could work. You aren’t asking him to do it every play, just now and again.

ok

bringing in rice makes it less likely they draft Dline in the first round where we really need either a WR or OL. thats the main reason i like it. i dont think Dline is a priority, saftey is a more glaring area of need so i think Rice is the perfect bandaid for the dline, cuz thats exactly what it needs (especially with Rod), not a complete overhaul.

in addition he is a veteran who has been dominant in the past. even if he doesnt perform as he once did, knowing that he can produce and wanting to prove it to himself and others will likely motivate him and others on the dline which is a good thing.

heh, well this is Angelo's start?

can’t wait to sign Aaron Brooks and Isaac Bruce!

Erm, well if we are going to call Milton Bradley nicknames, mine is Fischer Price: yes, you heard it here first..

If Harrison and Dusty are backups, who is starting?

Just curious about that comment…do you have Adams or Idonije as DT2? I’m pretty sure Harrison or Dvoracek is likely to beat out those guys.

That said, on the Rice thing…if he comes in cheap, why not. Give him a chance, if it doesn’t work out, see ya.

by TCBullfrog on Feb 3, 2009 1:08 PM CST reply actions

If he comes in for cheap

I’m not opposed. At the same time, if he’s going to be the DL version of John Tait, I’ll pass.

pretty much

I’m assuming right now the starting lineup would be Wale, Harris, Adams and Brown.

Starting to look like...

the raiders and the bucs… If we don’t get some young fresh talent this year and next year we are going to fall into this category…

Ya we just need her to start dressing like a clown!!!

by ~sweetness~ on Feb 3, 2009 1:23 PM CST reply actions

And she needs to hold a press conference

in which she can badmouth Lovie, then proclaim Pep Hamilton as the new HC.

Then she would officially be an Al Davis clone.

If he's 100% healthy

maybe they should give him peanuts to come in and try to make the team as a situational guy. It’s a big “if” at this point. JA prefers to draft defensive line early in the draft.
