2009 State Farm All-Star Challenge
I don't know if any one saw this over the weekend. Every year over Super Bowl weekend a small group of college players do a variety of skills competitions for scouts and fans, etc. This year most of the big name guys weren't there but obviously they don't need to raise their stock. I just watched it because we recorded it and I thought I would give a little review of the action and get your guys' thoughts on how everyone did.
People who were there:
QBs: Nate Davis, Ball State, Graham Harrell, Texas Tech, Chase Daniel, Mizzou, Hunter Cantwell, Louisville
Accuracy: They had to hit moving targets that were 10, 20, 30 and then 40 yards down field.
Harrell won it after a bonus round between him and Davis b/c they were tied. Both of them looked good but Davis clearly had better downfield accuracy. Daniel didn't look too great and Cantwell looked all right. The announcers throughout all the QB drills were like drooling over Harrell but he really didn't impress me too much.
In the arm strength Nate Davis really shined. He threw balls of 67 and then with the competition already won, 70 yards. Last year Flacco threw it 71 and 74 yards. Harrell threw 60 and his second throw wasn't any longer than the first, Cantwell threw 64 and 65 yards but both of his were really high. Daniel threw 61 and 63 yards.
And finally in the QB scramble the players had to run with a ball and make some throws on the run at a basket and then a target. None of them hit the basket (Harrell and Davis came closest) and only Cantwell and Harrell hit the target but Davis' throw didn't have enough on it to hit it and it barely missed the target. Harrell had the best footwork through the ropes. Harrell won.
On to the receivers and backs
Juaquin Iglesias, OU, Hakeem Nicks, UNC, Ramses Barden, Cal Poly, Jordan Norwood, Penn State, Donald Brown UConn (The only RB in the comp)
All impressed in all the comps with their hands. Nicks showed OK speed and good hands. Brown impressed with his ability to catch. Iglesias did well, he had the best speed of the bunch I'd say. Norwood has great hands but at 5'11" he's not a guy I think the Bears should be interested in. The guy who really impressed me was the 6'6" frame of Barden he didn't seem like a burner but his size and his long stride make him a guy I'd love the Bears to look at in the second round or maybe third depending on what the scouts are saying.

Great post
I didn’t watch it, and now I’m wishing I did.
I’m not doubting what you say, but I’m really surprised Harrell did so well on the downfield accuracy drill. Harrell is not known for his long throws and some of his balls are really erratic.
I saw Iglesias play this year but not Barden. Basing this strictly from the competition, which of those two do you think would be better for the Bears?

Well I think that depends
If you want speed you would probably want Iglesias but if you want a guy more like Crabtree who is big, strong, physical, can go up and get jump balls it seemed to me that Barden is more to the liking. But these guys weren’t doing combine stuff or running real routes so a lot of this is just my speculation.
Personally I liked Barden. He looked like he could turn into a Fitzgerald guy, someone who can go across the middle but also out jump corners on fades and that stuff.
And I don’t know if you read it wrong or what but I said Nate Davis clearly had better downfield accuracy not Harrell. Harrell hit the 10 and 20 yarders no problems but the two 30s and the one 40 yard target seemed harder for him.

I watched it...
Barden really impressed me as well he was huge and made some insane grabs, the one handed catch in the back of the endzone was sick. On Iglesias, I am an Sooner fan so I have seen him play many times, just so you know he isn’t a burner he is a guy who runs great routes and has good hands, he is pretty fast but he is a possesion receiver.
On the accuracy competition, I really don’t know what you are talking about with downfield accuracy, on his second turn he hit the 30 all 3 times. It is kind of weird that Davis doesn’t use the laces when throwing the football, however of the qbs there I would prefer him because it seemed like he was effortlessly tossing the ball 40 yards down the field and he did have good accuracy.

You said that
Harrell won it, I did read your statement afterwards, so I got confused.
I’m going to have to take a good look at Barden, you peaked my interest in him.

Well He Won It
But it was despite his deep accuracy. He missed the 40 yard target both times real wide, guess that’s what I meant. I just get the feeling he has Orton-type arm-strength.

I saw it
And Nate Davis was the best looking player there.
In terms of backs and recievers, they all looked pretty similar, though I think taking a flyer on the Marine in the sixth round who showed them how to do the o-course might be worth a shot. I’m pretty sure he’d be willing to go over the middle
If John Paxson were a Greek hero he would be known as Sans Testicles

It actually aired at least twice
I agree with most of what has been said already. With the exception of Norwood, who far outperformed all the others at catching ballls flung out of the JUGGS machine, great hands. I wonder if QB coaches will try to get Davis to use the laces? I’d never seen that before, and the balls came out consistently. There were some place kickers in competition also, dont know if that was mentioned. i dont know if I saw enough out of Nicks for him to be worthy of a #18 pick; in these competitions, he didnt really stand out.
