Bears Taking A Look At Darren Sharper

Dsharper_medium

Could the Bears have found their replacement for Mike Brown in the form of Darren Sharper?

Sharper is set to visit the New Orleans Saints on Monday, but this report says that the Bears are considered a serious contender.

I am strangely okay with this....

I think he’s a great pickup… Or would be so long as they don’t commit to much money in him as he’s a patch for the secondary.

He would also give us a real chance to see what we have in steltz who excelled at FS at LSU (geauxbears!) plus would allow us to sit a FS rookie in mays or some other project in 2010 if steltz can’t work out.

And Sharpers tour of the NFC north continues

I like it. he’s better than those other clowns.

linky no worky

but i like the idea nonetheless. IMO after receivers, the secondary unit needs the most help. forcing teams into 3rd and long situations with good run defense is cool, but actually stopping them on the 3rd and long would be a nice touch.

In bigger news

anyone see the little nugget in the Sun Times blog (at the end of the Kevin Jones article) that the Bears are one of three rumored destinations for Jay Cutler? He’s apparently pissed that they tried to send him to Tampa in a 3 way deal for Cassel, and now he wants out. Tampa, Detroit (we’d be in big trouble if Calvin Johnson got a real QB), and our very own Bears.

highly doubt

Cutler will land in Chicago. Besides, Angelo is hellbent on overpaying for aging safeties. Could have at least shown some interest in Dawkins, but instead we’ll take a look at Sharper who would be a “bargain” as Angelo would say. $33.9 million under the cap and he’s approaching FA like he’s looking for deals at Kmart.

well...

… when you have about 37 holes to fill on your team, $33.9M doesn’t go that far.

ha!

of course, we really haven’t fill a single hole yet…except MAYBE (god, i hope so) a starting RT/G in omiyale. i’m not down with overpaying for players, but we’ve gotta start moving soon, right? right???

I don't mind this

But it doesn’t excite me either. He’s old but it’s better than what we currently have.and even for an old guy he doesn’t miss many games, maybe that’s why we’re trying to get him.

No! No! No!

Too Old! Too Old! Too Old! Too Old!
I’d rather they kept Mike Brown.

I would take a chance on Darren Sharper being

healthy and effective over the chances of Brown being healthy and effective.

If

If it’s a one year deal for the NFL minimun – fine.

I agree

we would finally have a FREE safety instead of all strong safeties. The safety position is weak in the draft so give him a 2 year deal and draft someon next year. shouldn’t be that expensive.

Darren Sharper is done

He’s got nothing in the tank. This would be a very disappointing, albeit not surprising, addition.

WHY DO WE WANT TO SIGN A 33 YEAR OLD SAFETY?

Geez… WTF. Seriously. If that’s the route they’re gonna take, then just bring Mike Brown back for 1 year. He runs our defense!

We know it's the most valuable position on the football team. We've gone through so many scenarios at that position we can write a book, moreso on what not do."

I don't love it

but we don’t have a free safety on the roster so we have to do something. The guy is decling but if we can get him cheap and hold us over til next year and get a young guys in the draft, then I guess I am okay with it.

Great!!

So Angelo decides to release Mike Brown, whose been the heart and soul of the Bears defense for eight years (minus injuries) and replaces him with an older worse version of him. Great move.

I'd rather have

Jermaine Phillips.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Mar 2, 2009 11:09 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with tomas21

Jermaine Phillips is far better then Sharper and he knows the Defense..I am not sure which one is older though..I just hope are top ten first round pick next year is used by whomever replaces Angelo to pick up Taylor Mays. Maybe Angelo’s replacement may believe in Free Agency as well.

Sharper.

Darren maybe older but look at what Mike Brown has done for the bears, Yah he was the heart and sole of the defence when he was in the game He is a hell of good player but look at how many times he’s been injured compaired to Sharper. Give Sharper a break at least you don’t see him limping off the field like you did with mike brown. And look nobody has yet to pick up Brown. Teams are looking at the injury situation they don’t want to waste money on a guy who they don’t know when he’s in the game if he might get hurt on the first, second, or third play. why hold your breath on that. As to Sharper you don’t have to do that. Lighten up guys.
