The Bears Den - 3/10/09
In the Den
Please help me in welcoming our newest WCG contributor, scespy12. He will be writing on a limited basis to start. He will be providing a weekly post breaking down various schemes and formations.
The Bears were on hand at Georgia Tech's Pro Day, starting the rumors that the Bears are considering Michael Johnson.
Looking at some remaining possible free agent pickups.
The New York Jets draft at #17, one spot ahead of us. Per this article it looks like they have interestet in Darrius Heyward-Bey and Hakeem Nicks. That could be a problem if that is Angelo's desired position at #18.
Not sure if this was posted before, but here are the contract numbers on Frank Omiyale's contract.
In the Vicinity of the Den
Primetime games are to be announced in two weeks.
A little outdated, but...
Nowhere Near the Den
The UFL has it's coaches ranks full, agreeing with Dennis Green to coach along with the others (Jim Hasslett, Jim Fassel and Ted Cottrell).
They also may be looking to take a run at Michael Vick.

3 things to comment on
1)Michael Johnson-DE : It seems to me the Bears have a similar player in Mark Anderson; good pass rusher, weak tackler; though probably not as athletic as Johnson. Maybe the Bears can get the most out of Anderson and save the 1st or 2nd round pick it would take to get Johnson for other needs; and pick up a pass rush project(W.Davis-IL DE???) late in the draft.
2)The Jets have a lot of the same needs as the Bears and get to pick first. The Bears may have to move up a few spots to get the player they target in the 1st or 2nd rounds. Can anyone verify why the Bears do not have a 7th round draftpick? That might have been enough to move ahead of the Jets in round2.
3)The Frank Omiyale contract seems very unusual. If he proves valuable after he gets all that money his 1st year; why would he not hold out his 2nd year when all he would lose is about $1.75mil? Lets hope he appreciates that contract!
never mind #2
The Bears pick ahead of the Jets in Round2; plus they will probably receive a compensatory 7th rounder for losing Ayenbadejo + maybe another for Gilmore. Still not sure why some sites indicate the Bears have no current 7th round draftpick.
If Omiyale
proves to be a good pick up the Bears should lock him up in a longer contract.
