Tomas21 Mock Draft 1.0
This is my mock draft. It is based on who I tihnk teams will take, not who I think they should take. It is very unlikely, like any mock, to be at all correlative with the actual draft. I am sure some of the picks/omissions will personally offend some of you.
1. Lions: Matt Stafford. They should go OT here, as there hasn't been a successful underclassman QB in the last ten years or so (aside from Big Ben). But their off-season moves suggest they go QB here.
2. Rams: Jason Smith. The Rams wanted Jake Long last year. They get their LT this year in Smith.
3. Chiefs: Aaron Curry. He's too good a prospect to pass up, and the Chiefs need a player like him on their D. I could have seen them go Crabtree to increase Cassel's chances of success, but not after his surgery and questions about his speed.
4. Seahawks: BJ Raji. Everyone had Crabtree going here, but Housh and Branch should give Hasselbeck enough weapons for now. They really need a force inside their D line, and Raji is that.
5. Browns: Michael Crabtree. They lost their best weapon in Winslow, and Edwards is reportedly on the block. They need to give Quinn a chance to succeed.
6. Bengals: Eugene Monroe. Bengals get a nice value at a need position. They lost Stacey Andrews, and this will allow them to push Levi Jones to the right side.
7. Raiders: Jeremy Maclin. I think this is a little early for Maclin, but Davis won't. He has the speed Davis covets, and he fits a desperate need.
8. Jaguars: Michael Oher. The Jags signed Tra Thomas, but they still really need a guard, and Oher can kick inside until Thomas retires. It's a good situation for Oher because it will take him awhile to learn the position.
9. Packers: Brian Orapko. The Pack needs a rush 3-4 OLB, and they get a good one.
10. 49ers: Aaron Maybin. Like a lot of teams around here, the Niners need to boost their pass rush. They could go QB here, but I think they will give Hill and Smith another year to show them something. They could also take a tackle here, but Singletary will want to improve his D
11. Bills: Everette Brown: The Bills need a TE, but there isn't one worth taking this high. They won't take a QB after signing TO, since that would just put more pressure on Edwards.
12. Broncos: Ray Mauluaga: The Broncos are most in need of a NT like Raji, but they could also use a force inside.
13. Redskins: Andre Smith. I could easily see this pick being made by Carolina in a Peppers trade. Assuming they stay here, they need upgrades on both sides of the ball. Smith provides the best value here, and can take over for Jon Jansen.
14. Saints: Malcolm Jenkins. The Saints have everything they need on offense (except, apparently Tomlinson), but their defense really needs some help. They have needs all over the secondary, and Jenkins could potentially play CB or FS.
15. Texans: Brian Cushing. The Texans need some help at strong side linebacker, and Cushing could be a great addition there. They would also like a backfield partner for Slaton, but after finding a gem in Slaton in the third, I don't see them taking someone this early.
16. Chargers: Robert Ayers. The Chargers lost Igor Olshansky, and Ayers is a nice replacement. If LT leaves, then I could see Knowshown Moreno being the pick. If Sanchez is still available, then a team could easily move in here to take him, and the Chargers would likely be happy to move down.
17. Jets: Mark Sanchez. If the 49ers pass on Sanchez, I think he falls to the Jets. The Jets are desperate for a WR with Coles leaving, but I don't see them passing on a franchise QB this late.
18. CHICAGO: We need a RT, WR, FS, DE, OG, and QB, so there are a lot of options. I think they would've considered looking at Josh Freeman here, but his combine probably pushed him out of round 1 consideration. Eben Britton has the skill set to play LT or RT, but Angelo seems fixated on resigning St Clair and using him there. There is not a FS or OG worth taking this high. I hate Darrius "Troy Williamson 2.0" Heyward-Bay, and he doesn't really fit Kyle Orton's strengths. Percy Harvin is a great WR for a creative OC, which we don't have, and he isn't the prototypical #1 WR Angelo seeks.
So the pick is Hakeem Nicks. He's perhaps the second most complete WR in the draft, and in my opinion compares favorably to TJ Housh. There is a high potential for trading down here.
19. Bucs: Larry English. Tough call after the Bucs cut half their team. They need help at QB, WR, DT, DE and OLB. New coach Raheem Morris has connections to K-State's Josh Freeman, but again I think he is out of round 1 consideration. DHB is a potential replacement for Galloway, but I think they have bigger needs on D. English is an explosive player who can potentially re-energize their D
20. Lions: Eben Britton. They went Stafford early, they need to protect him. Britton could potentially play either tackle spot, so I think he gets the nod.
21. Eagles: Percy Harvin. McNabb asked for more weapons, and he gets one here. The Eagles are creative enough on offense to make use of Harvin's skills. He can be a hybrid RB-WR that gives Westbrook some help, but also gives McNabb a weapon in the passing game.
22. Vikings: Darrisu Heyward-Bay. I like Kenny Britt a little more as a fit for them, but I definitely see them taking a WR here. You'd think they would learn their lesson on taking all-speed no-production guys after taking Williamson a few years back, but they are the Vikings.
23. Patriots: Vontae Davis. The Patriots keep losing DBs and it's starting to hurt. They could also go Laurinaitis, but I don't see them using 2 first-round picks on 3-4 ILBs in consecutive years. Whatever they do it will probably look genius.
24. Falcons: Peria Jerry. The Falcons almost took Glenn Dorsey last year, and they still need a force inside. They could go DE here as well.
25. Dolphins: Clay Matthews. They really need help at OLB, and Matthews is a tough, smart football player that Parcells would like. If a WR fell to them I could see them going there as well.
26. Ravens: James Laurinaitis. This pick makes too much sense, since they lost Bart Scott and he was a real force on their team. They need a WR as well, but this is the pick.
27. Colts: Knowshown Moreno. The Colts have bigger needs, such as DT, RT and WR, but Addai's play really fell off last year, and they need an effective run game to keep Manning upright.
28. Eagles: Brandon Pettigrew. The Eagles really need a replacement for Dawkins, but there probably isn't a first round safety prospect. They could also go RB here, but Pettigrew is the pick. He replaces the disappointing LJ Smith.
29. Giants: Kenny Britt. They would probably like someone with less potential baggage than Britt, but there is no denying his talent. He could easily become the most productive WR in this class. The Giants really suffered after Burress shot himself in the leg last year.
30. Titans: Ron Brace. The Titans desperately need a DT to replace Haynesworth. Their D was not the same without him.
31. Cardinals: Beanie Wells. They Cardinals need for a future RB was apparent throughout the second half of the season. Edge will likely be released after they secure this position in the draft.
32. Steelers: Alphonso Smith. Everyone has them taking an interior lineman here, but I think replacing Brian McFadden is a bigger need. Smith is a nice prospect, and might be a little undervalued.

I'm moving toward
being ok with drafting a receiver with this pick. I have’t gone over completely. I can’t say I know enough about Britt to say anything informative about the pick.

I had heard that Britt could sneak up in the 1st, but wasn’t sure if the current thinking was middle or bottom of the first.

I like Robiskie a little more than Nicks, but as long as we take a decent receiver I’m good.

I like Percy Harvin or Heyward-bey.
I prefer Harvin. The guy can do everything. He is slightly slower than Heyward-bey but can do much more. I understand that a lot of people don’t like Harvin because he is a lot like Hester but is that a bad thing? And he is not the big target we are looking for but this guy has the goods.

dunno why people hate on Harvin
Hakeem Nicks over Harvin is a joke. DHB a reach, but his combine was awesome. IMO Harvin is second best wr. only Michael Crabtree is better this year.

Maclin is better than Harvin as is DHB.

being injury prone
doesnt really help your draft stock. harvin was constantly nursing injuries, without the big hitters in the nfl or the full season. he’s gonna break down every year. plus, have you heard of reggie bush, exact same mold except reggie didnt break down as much. now look at his nfl production, a gm would have to be in a vegetative state to pick percy harvin in the first round (so my money is on al davis trading back up in the first 15 picks for him).
i personally see the recievers as so: crabtree, maclin, nicks, dhb, britt, harvin, iglesiais, robiskie; thats about it for the first three rounds.

umm
“he’s gonna break down every year.” – total speculation
percy harvin does not = reggie bush. we are all unique snowflakes, no 2 alike
its funny to me how people (especially Bears fans) lack interest in the 2 best offensive weapons from the national championship team (tebow and harvin). nicks over Harvin is laughable.

craig krenzel won a national championship, maybe he should be our qb
chris weinke won one too, as did matt flynn, matt mauck, and ken dorsey
so your sarcastic comment about the bears not going for the weapons from a national champion means nothing to me

when it comes to issues of health
i trust doctors. If you are not a doctor you should really keep your lay opinion, based solely on speculation, to yourself. Speculation is one thing but drawing a medical conclusion without expertise or personal knowledge really tells me that the speaker truly has no idea what is going on and is not smart enough to even realize what they do or do not know or understand.
by No It All on Mar 11, 2009 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay
1- I never made any speculation, so I cannot keep it to myself.
2- You may feel that way about other people making speculations, but what you are going to have to accept is that this is a blog; and this blog allows people to make specualtions, whether they are based in merit or not.
3-
harvin was constantly nursing injuries, without the big hitters in the nfl or the full season. he’s gonna break down every year
That quote isn’t exactly as serious as you are trying to make it out to be. He’s not diagnosing anyone’s medical condition, he is using deductive reasoning and comparisons to establish his own opinions.

speculation
implies an understanding the the conclusion is based on inconclusive evidence. you are confusing speculation with the tendency to make unjustified assertions in blogdome. some dude in front of a computer reaching a conclusion about percy harvin’s medical health both present and future is hubris, not speculation

So much irony on this board lately
1. Using your medical rant against you, you can’t speculate about Tebow being a good NFL QB, since you’re not an NFL QB coach. Glad we got that squared away.
2. I’m not a doctor and I highly doubt you are. BUT, injury history can tell us a lot. If he got injured a lot during his college years, chances are he has a high probability of getting hurt in the NFL (where the game is faster and the hits are more violent).

amateur hour up in hur
1. Tebow being good at football is fact, not speculation. (you are not smart enough to use my words against me, it was a pathetic attempt to even try, sorry tiger).
2. while Harvin’s “injury history” does exist, it is not significant enough for the Bears to pass on him as he would instantly be one of the best wrs they have had in years.
by No It All on Mar 11, 2009 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That reading thing got you again
1. Never said Tebow wasn’t good at football. He’s a great college player, but it won’t translate. Go back and re-read what I said.
2. Great! We could instantly have one of the best WR’s we’ve had for a while until he gets onto the field….in which case, we’d be left with the same group we’ve had all along.

How are you so sure?
Even the professionals that say Tebow will not be an NFL QB are careful to leave the door open. It wont translate? That is an incredible statement. After next season Tebow may be considered one of the best QB’s ever, if he is able to avoid injury. Some are making a strong case now. I’m baffled by your certainty. Maybe you are right. Maybe you are stubborn. No one can predict what will happen but I would say the odds are in his favor, he works very hard at being the best, there is something very special about the man. Remember his declaration after Florida’s only loss? The man backed it up and that was a bold statement. I will say this, because of the naysayers, a man like Tebow and the drive that he possesses is going to work very hard to prove them wrong and it will be very interesting to see how it “translates”.

I don't care
about Tebow. He won’t be a Bear next year so for me I don’t care if he’s good or bad. If you want to save this and quote me on it during next years draft go right ahead.
NO IT ALL- just so you know Dr’s practice medicine so they make assumptions on health based on patient history and current symptoms then they throw drugs at it and hope it goes away. If it doesn’t then they TRY something else.
If a player is prone to injury in college there’s a good chance the trend will continue. And from what I know Harvin’s injuries weren’t all that serious in nature, more of a nagging type of injury.
If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

All blog opinions are speculation, even the well thought out and articulated
points.
1. Tebow is a strong guy, with a strong arm. And he’s mobile. He could work out, and I’m not low on him.
2. Harvin, if you paid close attention to news reports during the last two seasons, was constantly being reported as having this or that kind of issue with his knees and his achilles. Considering one must run in the sport of football, and that it is a physical sport, would you make a multi-million dollar investment in another player (like Chris Williams) who could end up missing large amounts of time. The Bears can’t afford to draft a player who has his history.
Harvin has the talent (or more) of a Devin Hester, but could drop into the 2nd or later 1st because of the concerns. Harvin is better than DH-B or Nicks, etc., and if we drafted him I wouldn’t be overly upset. However, I would be scared that he was going to get hurt.
We need a possession WR, though, and not someone like Harvin who will make Turner over-think how to use him. We already have that issue with Hester, Wolfe and others.
We need a player that will go in the middle like Moose could. One who can catch slant routes consistently and get YAC.

Well I look at it like this.
Crabtree and Maclin will be gone for sure. Heyward-bey has his speed and that’s kind of it. His stats are very average in college and could possibly bust. I don’t know. But when you have players like Maclin and Harvin who are all around big time play makers they are more of a sure thing. Why? because they can always do something like return kicks and punts if they have to. Now we need a big target, what about Brandon Rideau? Heyward-bey is what, 6’2" or 6’3"? maybe? That would be nice don’t get me wrong, I would like to have him but I like Harvin a little more.

DHB over Harvin
Harvin’s inability to avoid injury concerns me much more than DHB’s lack of production. And I think you have to take into account that DHB played for the Fighting Turtles and Harvin played for the National Champs. So to criticize DHB for low collegiate production, you have to think Harvin’s are inflated. I do think there are a few scenarios were Maclin falls to us, and I’m just praying that happens so J.A. doesn’t have to make a decision. And one final thought, DHB sounds way cooler than Percy.
by Hurricanes becoming Bears on Mar 10, 2009 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let me be clear.
I will be happy to get DHB even if Harvin is still available. And I am not criticizing his stats, it is true that they are average. But we can put him above average because of his speed which I like.

I reallly don't like
DHB as a prospect. So that may have biased my mock and made him fall more than he has in some mocks. I really don’t see him making the jump in competition level and all of the sudden producing like he hasn’t before.
I like Harvin more than DHB for sure, but not as a pure WR, and not under a close-minded, system driven OC. Under an OC with some creativity, Harvin could be a real weapon. I like the Philly fit because they need a WR and a RB to pair with Westbrook. You could make the argument they need a big possession WR and a big bruising RB, but I think Harvin could be an interesting fit.

Harvin makes sense in Philly
not to be too funny, but he can play WR and RB (like Westbrook).
To be sarcastic: Westbrook and Harvin can pick which one wants to be injured which week. Wait, they’ll both be hurt every week but suck it up and play.
