Josh Bullocks and Kevin Payne open camp at safety

Not that this suprises anybody, but there was still some question left.  At the opening of mini-camp, Josh  Bullocks started at free safety and Kevin Payne started at strong safety.

Bullocks gets the nod, because he is a very good tackler.

Zackary Bowman is Bullocks back up and Craig Steltz will back up Payne.

Other notes from camp:

Hunter Hillenmeyer (hand) and Dusty Dvoracek (bicep) will miss this weeks mini-camp.

Frank Omilaye will work exclusively at left guard.

Charles Tillman and Trumaine McBride were sidelines at the start of camp.  Nathan Vasher and Corey Graham will run as starters until they are back.

That means Tillman and Mcbride will not participate in this at all.

According to ChicagoBears.com....

Kevin Payne is still recovering from injuries and will not participate at all. Craig Steltz is starting at SS and Josh Bullocks is starting at FS. Zack Bowman is also going to be playing FS which I think might be a very good move.

There is youth at Safety

Last years pass defense was probably the weakest aspect for the Bears. Not resigning SS Brandon McGowan and FS Mike Brown, and replacing him with Josh Bullocks, are the major offseason moves for the defense. I haven’t seen enough of these 4 remaining young safeties to make a definitive statement about their level of play.
FS – Bullocks and Bowman: I think Bullocks was a 2nd round pick(taken just ahead of D.Manning in 2005?) and struggled last year in a bad defense. Could it be that he was overcompensating for other poor Saints defensive players and is not as bad as that infamous Youtube clip? I really like Zack Bowman’s potential, whether its at FS or CB; he seems instinctive and athletic, but has been injury prone and is unproven.
SS – Kevin Payne and Craig Steltz: Not exceptional athletes at a position where its of great benefit to have one. Its hard for me to identify strengths and weaknesses, especially Steltz, but overall it seems they are below average.
