John St. Clair is a Chicago Bear No More
This story and this story are reporting John St. Clair has signed a 3 year, $9 million contract with the Cleveland Browns, with $600k $1.25 million guaranteed.
Good luck with that, Brownies.

I also think that
our OL is screwed. We’re one C-Will injury away from no holes.

we already have a lot of holes.

I wondered about that too. I’m guessing he meant something along the lines of not having anyone to open up holes. ChiFan was a bit traumatized when St. Clair left… his mind wasn’t right for a bit.

JA is seriously that incompetent that he couldn’t resign an easily sign able John St. Clair?? Somone please sack him!

No...
The Browns way overpaid for him. However, the interesting question is whether this makes that Kevin Schaffer available? People thought he might resign with the Browns, but this signing makes that unlikely.
by chase17 on Mar 17, 2009 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Can someone tell
whether Shaffer is good? The Browns fans seemed happy to see him go, and the Browns replaced him with St Clair, which isn’t much of a vote of confidence for him. He is a RT, but is he a good one?

He’s a decent run blocker and an OK pass blocker. He really excels with a good RG though. How is your guy’s RG?

yes, considering we are weak at that position and I believe there were reports out there saying he wanted 12-15 million too
and they got him for 9. If we had resigned him, our Oline would have been ok, now its a huge question mark. It doesn’t seem like JA is going after anyone either

I could see him being worth
like maybe 6 over 3 yrs. 9 I think is a bit of a stretch. The problem will b e that we’ll probably pay out more than 6 to fill his void. Here’s hoping we find someone worth the $$.

I don't mind that
St Clair won’t be here, but I am a little concerned that the Bears got outbid ona relatively small contract for a player they considered a priority to bring back. I didn’t want him back, but Angelo did, and couldn’t get him because of money (and not much of it).
Who said the Bears aren’t cheap?

How sad
is it that we are happy that he’s gone but sad because we have no faith in the organization to do anything about it? I’m glad they didn’t get in a bidding war for JSC there’s no way he’s worth anywhere near what he got.
If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

Bears will be fortunate to get to 6 WINS in 2009
This folks is shaping up to be a very ugly upcoming football season. Huge screaming position priorities at Offensive Tackle, Safety, Defensive End, Wide Receiver. Also the never-ending dilemma of having inadequate options at Quarterback.
Just imagine the ugliness of this offensive line if it turns out Chris Williams is bust. Wu-wee are we in for good times in Chicago !!!!

I hate to agree with you
but our holes seem like they aren’t receiving any attention nor will they be filled. It may take a shitty season for this team to sack JA and Lovie and get personnel in here that will try to build a true contender. I don’t want this team to fail, but I think it looks grim

2010
Maybe bears ownership is trying to make Chicago as attractive as possible for the big coaches looking for jobs in 2010. Terrible 2009 (which I expect) will lead to a good (possibly great) draft pick a year from now.
Let’s assume worst case scenario and the Bears have a top 3 choice in 2010 draft and have their choice of Bradford, McCoy, or Tebow (superman).
Could make for a very attractive employment opportunity for someone like Shannahan who has chicagoland roots.
Sorry for all the posts about next years team but I am sick of watching Lovie and Angelo running their version of Bears football. I hate Lovie defending his guys. I hate the lack of accountability. I hate the relationship with the media. I hate Bears football being average. I hate the DAMN musical chair game this organization plays and it always equates to crap. I hate trading down in the draft. I only hope for a real football couch like Shannahan or Cowher making residence in the Chi in 2010 (and an equally as impressive GM).

Why?
So we can have another weak-armed QB in Chicago. I think he is a great QB, but he has a weak arm, Texas relied on a quick timing passing game last season. Plus, if history repeats itself Texas QBs haven’t been gunslingers since Major Applewhite, ex. Vince Young, Chris Simms, and that makes me hesitant about McCoy.

This is a little concerning
Not re-signing St. Clair is a vote of no confidence for JA. He is by most accounts very average, but you’re playing with fire when you only have only 2 OTs under contract this late in free-agency. Sometimes you have to over pay for a player when you have a huge need to fill. It will be very upsetting If Shaffer or Pace isn’t visiting Halas Hall by the weekend. No matter what happens in free-agency, JA will be drafting a RT and Guard early in the draft.

I agree...
Regardless of what you thought of St.Clair, we’d have been better off with him on the roster. Angelo said he was a priority, then lowballed the guy who probably would have been the starter at RT. At very least the top backup at both G & T. $9 mil is probably too much for him but it never should have come to that.

I don't think
Pace or Chris Williams can play RT. I would be shocked if we signed Pace. Shocked, and confused where he’d play, or whether this means something is wrong with Chris Williams. Plus we’d still need a RT.

The biggest knock on williams
Coming put of college was his lack of run blocking. So no he could not play RT.

I wouldn't rule out a move to RT for Williams
It would seem the fusing of 2 spinal vertebrae would make a person less flexible, but perhaps even stronger. During Smith’s tenure the Bears seem to prefer quick OTs(whether right or left). I doubt he can ever truly become a road-grader who plays with a mean streak that most teams look for in a RT, but in this sytem he could suffice. Its not like the Bears strictly run to the right side.
