Who Do You Want?
Hey all,
I am in charge of the Bears draft for the SB Nation Eagles site BleedingGreenNation.com. I was looking for some feedback on what you guys were thinking. Some of the mocks have you guys taking D. Heyward Bey, or the best receiver at that slot. Seems like you could also use an OL and this is a pretty good draft for it. If a talent like Andre Smith dropped all the way to 18 I would think that would be some pretty incredible value. Are there some positions I'm missing? Would you even bother trying to get a backup/challenger for Orton? I figure you guys have been mulling this over for a while, so tell me what an idiot I am and give me a couple of ideas. Thanks guys.

Dude, you are an idiot :)
Grossman ain’t our QB.
And my personal preference would be
1st round- OL
2nd round- WR

touche
knew that, don’t know why I wrote that. I guess my subconscious didn’t see much difference between Orton and Grossman

OL and WR are the targets
We have been shying away from DHB though. Seems Nicks is a better fit. Maybe Brit. If Maclin falls he’s the pick, otherwise Oher, or maybe Britton or Beatty. Due to Angelo’s success and fixation on defense, if Vontae Davis (CB) falls, I predict he’d be the pick.

O Line is biggest concern
If Orton dosen’t have time to throw all the WRs in the world are not going to help. You could have J.C. himself and it wouldn’t do any good. Besides not helping the running game either.

What?
Don’t you know that the Chicago Bears and myself have been chosen and anointed by J.C. himself to show the world the true error of their ways?

I would say OL or WR within the first two rounds
but a lot of us are clamoring for OL first.

Do you think
there will be a starting quality tackle at #49.
by luckie815 on Mar 19, 2009 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
DHB or Nicks with #18
Loadholt should still be available @ #49.
If both Heyward-Bey and Nicks are gone @ #18, then take Oher/Britten, and then Robiske with #49

You might want to mention
the possibility of trading down if ROTs A.Smith and Oher are off the board; its the Bears biggest need and it would be a reach to take any other OT at #18. But since you have to pick someone at #18, give us the best WR in this order: Maclin, Nicks, DHB. I assume its only a 1 round mock, but if not, the Bears would target Loadholt in the 2nd round.

I was thinking the Bears might go WR in round one....
but I’m not so sure now that St.Clair has signed with the Browns. Even though I believe we can get a quality o-lineman in the second, wisdom says we should go o-line in the first and maybe we can get a quality WR in the second.

Still WR
I’m still on a WR for the first round and get Loadholt in the second. But when did this site come to the agreement of Nicks over DHB. I’ve been on DHB basically since the beginning and thought his combine would put him right around the 18th pick and more or less he is. I know everybody wants the “possession” receiver but we did just draft the all-time receptions leader in the SEC. If we had Hester, DHB, and Olsen just run fly routes, somebodies going to out run their coverage. I don’t see how having the fastest receiving tandem in the league is a bad thing.

Because we don't have...
a big armed QB. If we had someone like Cutler or Leftwitch or even Grossman, having a speedy WR core would be good because they could just run by everyone and be hit deep. However, we have a short/intermediate passing game, so big possession receivers are what we need.

hmm
1st OL
2nd OL
3rd OL

I actaully wouldn't be mad if that was our draft
by chase17 on Mar 19, 2009 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would
Considering Hester and Bennett would be our only receivers and we won’t sign Holt or any other FA’s.

Why?
If 2 of those guys can become instant quality starters, then Orton will have time to allow Hester and Bennett to uncover. It would also allow Forte and Jones to actually have holes to run through, which would be nice to see. That would also open up the passing game.

Eh
I could see if we had Fitzgerald/Boldin or Harrison/Wayne who can get open damn near every play, but we have a CB converted WR in only his second season as a receiver and a second year player who didn’t catch a pass last year.

It would be a Happy Draft Weekend for me if....
1. Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina(I know DHB is on everyone’s mock draft, but I feel nicks would better fit our needs as a possession receiver instead of having Hester and Hester-ish rookie as our #1 & #2. Nicks is tall great hands and is hard to tackle. Great End Zone Target
2. Phil Loadholt, OT Oklahoma He is 6’7" 332, and is a BEAST put him at RT and move Omiyale back to LG to protect Orton’s backside.
3. Sen’Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn He is an quick motor guy, good size and Let’s see what Rod Marinelli can do with him.
4. Eric Wood, C/OG, Louisville He is versitile and can play either guard position and can be an heir to replace Kruetz when the time comes.
5. DB/FS best available hopefully Jairus Byrd, Oregon will still be available
6. OT Fenuki Tupou, Oregon (6-5, 332) or Augustus Parrish, Kent State (6-5, 300) could just be the bulk we need to give Orton the time to hit Hester, Olsen, or Nicks.
7. The best of what’s left…

Yes I live in Wisconsin
I actually live about an hour and a half from Minneapolis, so I normally get all sorts of looks and snide remarks when wearing my Urlacher jersey on gamedays :-)
That’s alright though, I’d take it more seriously if it wasn’t comming from Packer and Viking fans…my Father is a Vikings Fan and my Father-in-law is a Packers Fan so football talk at family gatherings can be quite entertaining…

It really comes down to if we trade down or not...
If we do, then Britt looks like the WR pick
If we don’t, then Nicks looks like the WR pick.
We do need O:Line help, specially a mauling run blocking force.
Britton is really the only pick that kind of fits the bill and isn’t completely overreaching in the first.
So it looks like this. If we go WR at 18 it’s either DHB or Nicks. If we go O:Line, it should be Ebon Britton and that’s about it. No one else fits our O:Line need IMO. Oher isn’t ready to start. Andre Smith looked bad at his pre-day, even worse at the draft, and is another Benson waiting to happen.
I’m of the firm belief that trading down is the right call at this time since the player quality between Nicks and Britt isn’t that large, nor is the quality between Britton and Loadholt. However, if we come out of the first three rounds with a good receiver/britton or loadholt/ and Duke Robinson I’d be a happy camper. I’d also like to see Eric Wood in a Bears uniform.
