I was just talking to ChiFan13 about the remaining WRs...

and there are several who would make a solid #2, and maybe even a couple who could be a #1 (maybe).

This is the only area I feel like JA and company might try to do something with. Outside of WR though, I just don’t think we’ll do anything else (unfortunatley).

Things will get better as they improve...

ya

I think there are a few oions here. Austin, Baskett, Bennett, Carter, Coles, Henderson, Moore, Porter, and Reggie Williams are all worth lookin at. Maybe even a few vets Galloway,Harrison, Hilliard, Toomer. That is a big MAYBE though. They are all getting old and would need to be evaluated.

Todd Boeckman = this years sleeper QB!!!

A few guys could be an upgrade...

1. Laveranues Coles because he is a solid #1 receiver.

2. Reggie Williams has great size and I think was under utilized in Jacksonville.

3. Devery Henderson has serious speed and can catch the ball real well. Isn’t very big though, very similar to Hester.

4. Ashley Lelie went from the Denver to the ATL with hopes of being there #1… that flopped. He then got shipped to San Fran and then Oakland. He was decent in Denver then has been in terrible offensives where ever he went… he might need a little of that Ron Turner & Neckbeard juice to make him fly high.

5. Marvin Harrison. I almost didn’t put him on because I just don’t think he is worth even close to what he is asking salary wise. He is one of the best all times, but even Denver will tell you Jerry Rice wasn’t the best they ever had.

Coles is decent for a stopgap, but I think he wants a big deal, and I don’t think he’s worth it since he seems to be on a steep decline. I’d like him at the right price, but Buffalo is gunning for him so I think he’ll get a decent size contract.

Reggie Williams, iirc, just got busted for a dui and possession, or something like that, so might not be playing football for awhile.

Henderson is fast, but he can’t catch. I disagree that he can catch real well. I think his hands are a big part of his problem.

Ashley Lelie has been pretty bad almost everywhere he’s been. I don’t know that Turner/Orton is the cure for any WR disease.

I think there is a pretty decent chance Harrison retires, based on reports I’ve seen.

I do like the pics though.

Thanks!

but, I gotta respond…

I didn’t hear that about Williams. I just looked it up and yea, you’re right… bummer.

Henderson is much approved this year catching the football. He only had two drops this past season; while Colston dropped eight. But, yea I might have been a little ahead of myself saying he could catch the ball “real well”.

Now I really disagree with you about Lelie. He had some serious pretty decent stats in Denver.
Year G GS Rec Yds Avg TD
2005 16 13 42 770 18.3 1
2004 16 16 54 1,084 20.1 7
2003 16 10 37 628 17.0 2

When he started in all 16 games, with a decent Denver offense, his performance rivals some of the better performers of any season. He had a fallout with the team when Rod Smith retired and the team had talks of bringing in T.O. to help the receiver core. That started his downward trend of being on the 7-9 Vick led Falcons, the 5-11 Niners with Alex Smith and Trent Dilfer at the wheel, and then to Oakland, 5-11 and Jamarcus Russell (’nuff said)… So… Come on! No receiver could produce on those teams!

The Turner/Orton juice was just some serious sarcasm. But, I do think he could help this offense.

by sirus19x on Mar 2, 2009 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

i don't know...

I really don’t think he’s any good. Those good years he had (and I’d only consider his 2004 good) he had a 20 ypc average. So he’s a big play/deep threat guy. Kyle Orton can’t throw an accurate deep ball, so I don’t know what he’d be productive here. And that was one good year out of a career of mediocre to bad.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Mar 2, 2009 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

ok.

I can agree with you on that… maybe he is just a big play guy, but is that all that bad? I can CERTAINLY agree with you that Orton can’t throw the long ball worth a crap.

Like I said before, he really hasn’t been around much offensive talent when he was in Atlanta, San Fran, and Oakland to have much success. I’d say his 2004 was exceptional and ’03 & ’05 were decent (w/ a lack of scoring), but remember Shanahan loved running the ball.

by sirus19x on Mar 3, 2009 12:00 AM CST up reply actions

What about Jenkins?

I have seen several sites that list Atlanta WR Michael Jenkins as a UFA and others don’t list him at all. Does anybody know what his contract status is?

by sheepskinz1 on Mar 2, 2009 8:53 PM CST reply actions

he

resigned for a new 4 year deal. I had trouble finding info on it, but it’s true.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Mar 2, 2009 10:47 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks

He was the one I was hoping we would land. Oh well. As a Bears Fan I am used to dissapointment.

by sheepskinz1 on Mar 3, 2009 8:09 AM CST up reply actions

What about Hank Baskett...

He might not be a great receiver, but we would be able to look at his wife, a former Girl Next Door, every game. At least its something.

by chase17 on Mar 2, 2009 9:46 PM CST reply actions

This is true..

Todd Boeckman = this years sleeper QB!!!

by ~sweetness~ on Mar 2, 2009 9:57 PM CST reply actions

Three of the RFA

Baskett, Floyd, and Clayton would be a nice addition to one the worst WR corps in the league. Maybe the Bears can catch Baltimore or Seattle off-guard after spending some big money in free-agency.

Tory Holt

The Rams are trying to clear cap space. I would offer them our comp pick for his rights. They are shopping him and Orlando Pace.

by luckie815 on Mar 3, 2009 5:08 AM CST reply actions

yeah

definitely would be an upgrade. even if he doesn’t get 100+ catches or 1000+ yards

High character guy

He would also be a great mentor for our young WRs.

by luckie815 on Mar 3, 2009 7:28 AM CST up reply actions

Absolutely...

Just a couple seasons ago he was seen as one of the best receivers in the game. But with the directions the Rams have went its no wonder his stats have been hurt. I think he is need of a change of scenery.

by sirus19x on Mar 3, 2009 8:04 AM CST up reply actions

Can't offer comp picks

Teams cannot trade comp. draft picks. It would have to be a normal pick.

WR

I think we should pick up a couple of these guys that are 6’3 – 6’5. There is like 14 or so. Plenty to choose from so we can add some size!

Todd Boeckman = this years sleeper QB!!!

by ~sweetness~ on Mar 3, 2009 7:26 AM CST reply actions

They will

but it probably will be through the draft, Robiskie or Barden.

by luckie815 on Mar 3, 2009 7:32 AM CST up reply actions

Forsure, but

they need some guys that can play every down this season. Only a few studs can come in as rookies and start every down!! I would imagine they get 2 guys off of this list and then draft 1 or 2 rookies.

Todd Boeckman 6'5 244lb 5th yr senior = this years sleeper QB!!!

by ~sweetness~ on Mar 3, 2009 7:36 AM CST up reply actions

A lot

of the good WRs on that list are already signed or are tendered too high, and some are head cases. Dosen’t leave much.

by luckie815 on Mar 3, 2009 7:41 AM CST reply actions

The ones that are signed have the teams they are signed to on the far right. The rest are either UFA or RFA and the guys that are franchised would need to be traded for.

by ~sweetness~ on Mar 3, 2009 8:05 AM CST up reply actions

I believe

that RFAs are tendered at three different levels. If you get one of them you will owe a draft pick at the level he was tendered.

by luckie815 on Mar 3, 2009 8:14 AM CST up reply actions

I have no idea on that..

Seems like Angelo has no appetite for spending a lot on a free agent wide receiver

That rules out Laverneus Coles.

The one name that is mildy intriguing on that list is fellow NIU alum Sam Hurd. Other than that all I see is a lot of ancient washed up crap and dubious journeyman in the mold of Brandon Lloyd. Lets also keep in mind that Kyle Orton isn’t exactly the caliber of quarterback who shall bring out the best in a questionable wide receiver either. Suffice to say he isn’t Peyton Manning in this regard.

by BLou on Mar 3, 2009 9:37 AM CST reply actions

Coles thinks

he is worth the same kind of money as T.J. He walked away from a 6 million bonus to test FA. He is delusional

by luckie815 on Mar 3, 2009 9:44 AM CST up reply actions

we can only wish

id like them to sign baskett, looker and either coles or harrison for veteran leadership!!! what do you guys think?? i know they wont sign any one of those guys but i think each one of those guys i picked would be a great fit in chicago!!

by CuTler2bearz on Mar 3, 2009 12:28 PM CST reply actions

Veteran leadership?

How did that work with Marty Booker? Gag. The veteran free agents available are mostly a collection of ancient used-up relics from the past. Marvin Harrison being effective at this stage and with Kyle Friggin Orton throwing him the football? Tori Holt being effective at this stage and with Kyle Friggin Orton throwing him the football?

by BLou on Mar 3, 2009 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

I think Torry

Holt has a couple more years of life in him. Last year was his first sub-par year, and the whole Rams team was terrible. He’s certainly not what he once was, but he remains one of the most professional, well-prepared WRs in the NFL. If nothing else he could command a little attention and help teach the young WRs how to run routes and watch film. He’s only got one year left on his contract, iirc, and he could probably be had for a mid to late round pick, so he’s low risk.

How about Miles Austin?

Pick a WR in Draft (#1) and then Austin. He’s 6’3, would probably come relatively cheap and i saw him make some pretty good grabs for the cowboys last season. Getting a big guy is a must.
