Who DON'T You Want?
Most of the posts this time of year ask which players you want your team to draft next month. I am wondering which players you DON'T want the Bears to draft. It should probably be limited to players the Bears could possibly target in the first couple rounds, or players that you've seen the Bears take in mocks.
Here are mine:
Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU. I have yet to hear anything this guy does well, but I seem him going in mocks as high as the Redskins at 13. He wasn't particularly productive, didn't have a great combine, and to me doesn't project as anything more than an average 3-4 DE. I don't think he has the pass-rushing ability to play 4-3 DE, and he doesn't seem any better than Michael Haynes to me.
Derrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland. Troy Williamson, version 2.0. He's definitely fast, but he's not a football player in my opinion. I particularly don't like him for an offense like ours, outdoors, with a qb who can't throw accurately over 15 yards. I think he'll be mediocre wherever he goes (just like he was in college).
Michael Oher, LT, Ole Miss. I think he could maybe be an effective LT, but I don't think he projects as a good RT, which is where we'd need him. He is not strong enough, mean enough, or driven enough to play RT in a run-heavy offense like ours. From reading his book, I question how strong his love of football is, and whether he'll be self-motivated enough to succeed in the NFL.
The first 2 in particular make me nauseated when I see them picked for us in a mock draft.
Who do you dislike?

Great post idea.
I don’t want…
Percy Harvin
Mark Sanchez
Andre Smith
Tim Tebow :)
what they you use lame AOL speak
I don't want Harvin
for our team, but I think he could be very successful in the right offense. I think Indy, Philly and NE would turn him into a very productive pro.
DEJESUS!!!
Kevin Payne
Craig Steltz
Josh Bulllocks
Rashied Davis
Oh… wait. I think I missed the objective here.
"You win because of the quarterback. We have to get that position stabilized. We're fixated on that.
We know it's the most valuable position on the football team. We've gone through so many scenarios at that position we can write a book, moreso on what not do."

Why does everyone rip Payne?
From what I saw I thought he played pretty well. Better than anyone else in our secondary.

He can't cover well...
And he doesn’t wrap up when he tackles.

He was a little sloppier at the end of the year,
but tackling wasn’t a big concern to me. Just coverage.
I have heard anyone saying anything about Grahm. What is his position this year?
Kick it to me... I'm open!
He's battling Vasher

Percy
I agree Jackson doesn’t fit our system, but I hate Percy Harvin. I hate Florida, I hate injury prone short tweeners. But I’m gonna have to disagree about Oher and A. Smith. Regardless of what their character flaws are, it doesn’t take too much to grab a hold of someone and run them into the ground. I would take either guy as a RT. And from what I’ve read Oher’s actually a better run blocker than pass blocker. Once he gets a bead on someone, he crushes them. I don’t see how we could pass on either of them if they fall to 18.

Eh...
Everything I’ve read about Smith says he isn’t anywhere near as strong as he should be and his work ethic is mediocre at best. Add that to not being the brightest bulb in the world and you have someone I really don’t want on our team.
Oher is going to depend almost entirely on his coaching, which is why I don’t want him. He won’t be ready this year to be a quality starter.
Agreed
I think Smith could be an asset to a team, however he has shown absolutely no urgency in putting on a good 1st, 2nd, or 3rd impression for the most important job interview of his life.

I completely agree. Kind of
Oher and Williams as bookend tackles would be simply amazing. You’re also correct in identifying him as a RT. He is an absolute road grader, with adequate pass protection skills. He is still raw, yet has better footwork than most. (If people haven’t noticed yet, I am in a deep man-love with Oher)
Smith has all the physical tools needed to be a great tackle. Unfortunately, he doesn’t give a hoot. I would not take him with a fifth round pick. Remeber when everyone dogged Ced Benson for not caring? Because Amdre Smith was too goshdarn lazy to show up for the combine, the biggest interview of his life! That’s not going to be corrected when you give him money.
Percy Harvin is a world-class athlete, and a sub-par wide reciever. Nearly 80% of his big plays were run from RB. He can’t run routes, which I’m pretty sure WR’s need to do. Oh yeah, he also can’t stay healthy. A pox on whomever selects him
No OT in the 1st
I’d rather not see an OT taken @ #18 unless both DHB and Nicks are taken by that point. I don’t see that happening but who knows. If both are gone take Oher or Britten
If I were running the show, Nicks @ #18 and Loadholt @ #49 thus giving Orten someone to throw the ball to and someone to help keep him off the turf.

Just out of curiosity
Would you rather have Nicks @ 18 and Loadholt @ 49
Or either Kenny Britt/Robinskie(whichever you like less or both if you want to go into detail) Loadholt and Duke Robinson?
Nothing wrong with Robiskie
Robiskie is great, but not at #18, if Nicks and DHB are gone at #18, I think we then would need to focus on OT with either Oher or Britten(maybe Beatty depending on the run on OT’s). Then Robiskie would be a good fit for us at #49. As for Kenny Britt, I didn’t see alot of him last year and for some strange reason my gut says no to him…nothing tangible just a feeling.
I also would prefer Loadholt because he is big, tough, has good football smarts. Nothing against Robinson, I would just take Loadholt first.
In my perfect world get Nicks @ #18, to complement Hester. Get Loadholt @#49 to be RT, moving Omiyale back to LG. And get Eric Wood C/OG as our 3rd rd pick to fill in/start @ RG. If by some miracle JA is reading this our first offensive lineup could look like this:
WR – Bennett
TE – Olsen
RT – Loadholt
RG – Wood
C – Kreutz QB – Orten RB – Forte
LG – Omiyale
LT – Williams
WR – Nicks
WR – Hester

*nods*
I loves me some Eric Wood on the Bears, definately.
And no, definately not Robiskie at 18. The only way I see taking Britt or Robiskie is if we trade down to pick up a 2nd.
You love wood?
Whoa. Too much information.

nicks at 18 would be a bit of a reach
especially after John Shoop compared him to mushin muhummad

Mushin
If it wa Mushin when first drafted (ie Carolina part 1)then fantastic, if old used up Mushin that we mostly saw then no it wouldn’t be worth the 18th pick. But I have a feeling he is compairing him you young “Muuuuuuuush!!!!” Just had to throw one in for old time sake.

Might be a small reach...
But there really isn’t a whole lot of better options…
DHB definately has the measureables, but as everyone has pointed out that’s really all he has and he definately looks like he may end up being a project at WR which we really don’t need. I’m not saying he isn’t going to be a good player like some people, I’m saying I don’t expect him to decently contribute until season 3.
At 18, the only WR even close to value for the slot is Nicks who shot up the board because of his combine.
The only OT that fits our need and can likely contribute on Day 1 AND fits in the value calculation is Eben Britton.
None of the Safety’s are worth the 18th pick IMO, and I’m not terribly impressed with any defensive position, other than maybe LB, after the first one or two players depending on position. Plenty of depth on Defense, but not a lot to wow me.
So that leaves people like me who aren’t sure they want to wait on DHB to take either Nicks, or Britton if he’s there if we stay at 18.
I agree w/ you
We need to draft players that can start from day one and be productive. It’s unanimous we all agree we need to take a WR and RT in the first and second. If we decide to go OL in the first I wanna see Oher, A. Smith, or Britton taken w/ Robiskie taken in the second. If we go WR in the first I wanna see Maclin(he may fall he may not), Nicks, or DHB and Loadholt in the second.
Considering Maclin probably won’t fall I’d love to see Nicks taken. DHB has talent but Nicks is more polished running routes and catching the ball IMO.
"I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it."
Definately agreed on almost all counts.
I’m not the biggest fan of Maclin, and I really like Kenny Britt, but other than that I think I’m on the exact same wavelength.
The big issue in my head is that I don’t see a huge performance difference between Britt and Nicks, or between Britton and Loadholt. Robiskie is only a slight downgrade off of Britt and Nicks because of a bit less quickness out of cuts. All three of these WR fit the same mold between 6,1for Nicks and 6,4 for Britt, all around 215lbs, and all willing to go over the middle and willing to work hard for YAC. While Britton has a higher grade because of better technique, both are able to start this year at RT and be good to great at it.
This is why it really pains me to see us taking anyone at 18, if people we could be taking at 28, or in the early 2nd are pretty much the exact same thing as far as our needs go, and we could be filling more of them.
Definitely don't want
Sanchez
Harvin
Britt
I’d be happy as hell if we got Maclin and I wouldn’t be upset if we got DHB
"I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it."
Remember 1998?
I was 10 at the time, so I’ve had to do some backchecking.
There were 2 QB’s who were battling for the top spot. Ryan Leaf from Washington State was initially thought to be the top prospect. Everyone initially thought he was going to the Colts at #1.The other was a polished QB from Tennessee named Peyton SOmethingOrOther.
Leaf had the superior arm(like Stafford), but manning was more accurate and ready to lead a pro offense ike he did at Tennessee (like Sanchez).
Now I’m not saying that Sanchez is the next Peyton Manning, but his game equates better to the NFL than any other QB in this draft worth taking.
So if he were available at 18, I would take him with a knowing smirk on my face.
No use
Harvin- no where to put him since the Bears don’t know how to utilize Wolfe already.
A. Smith- he’s going to be out of the league within two years cause of his character.
Stafford- bust waiting to happen; played horribly against tough competition.
Michael Johnson- plays way too tall, and will get manhandled in the running game.
"I'm not so mean. I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something." - Dick Butkus
Who don't I want us to draft?
An OT who needs back surgery before playing a game.
Oh wait. That happened? Frankly I don’t care who we draft I just want a guy who can play and contribute.
The shortest distance between two points is under construction.

the worst part is
the news came minutes after they drafted him. I remember going on to PFT while watching the draft and reading that article and smiling (sadly, my pick (Shard) didn’t work out too well last season either).
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
news actually
came hours before they drafted him
My miss list...
Percy Harvin- discussed above
Andre Smith- discussed above
Josh Freeman- no way he is an NFL QB
DHB- not at 18, he is an early second rounder
Aaron Maybin- he’s an OLB in a 3-4, so its not a fit
more but if the Bears took them I’d have to tear out my own esophagus
Picks I dont want....
An OT who wont play due to injury.
A WR who wont play due to…… I dk what?
A CB who will be on the practice squad for 7 weeks and then the week he is taken off, has a great game but then goes straight to the IR.
That isnt too much to ask, is it?
