Kyle "Freaking" Orton
I am going to start this post with saying I was excited when the Bears drafted Kyle Orton a few years ago. As a Big Ten football fan, Orton was a great college QB. Great skills, good poise, excellent leadership...
This Purdue QB was going to be a great QB for whatever NFL team drafted him. A 3rd string All American behind Heisman winner Jason White and future Heisman winner Matt Leinhart. He was destined for greatness, I was sure of it! Then in the 4th round of the 2004 NFL draft.... my favorite team... The Chicago Bears... who had 1st round pick Rex Grossman... drafted Kyle Orton! I shocked and stunned. Grossman was still a young prospect with tons of potential, The Franchise QB. "The Bears were loading up at the QB position? What gives?" I thought to myself. Well, after Rex got hurt his 2nd season in a row... Orton was given the nod to hand the ball off to the playoffs his entire rookie year. Then Rex took back over and struggled aimlessly with consistency... I then asked myself again if these were the same two QB's who tore it up at the college level? Same name, same players, obviously different games.
Orton, while having a very favorable record in his NFL career is not seen as an elite QB. Far from it. He is seen as a "Game Manager". What happened to that crazy kid from Iowa?
Surrounded by medocre talent on the offensive side of the ball, Orton is crippled by his lack playmakers and his lack of... something. Confidence? Ability? I don't know!
I WAS a Grossman advocate (and willing to admit a mistake). I am also a strong supporter of trading for Cutler, but at some point I thought Orton could be THE GUY! I could still be a stong supporter of Kyle if someone can answer one question...My question to you and to him is... does Kyle Orton know he can be THE GUY? He certainly doesn't look like it anymore. I'm no NFL analyst or a GQ promoter, but the Bears probable starting QB's general preciption is far from it was when he was a Heisman hopeful at Purdue...
He went from Robo-Orton demolishing every secondary in his path to looking like a homeless bum who Lovie found on the streets of Chicago. And HEY, most people are thinking it, if I'm the only one saying it.
I doubt the Bears are going to trade for Jay Cutler or Brady Quinn and probably won't sign Jeff Garcia or Byron Leftwhich (Thank God) or whoever else these forums will be talking about... Orton is THE GUY for at least one more year. So here is my advice for you, Mr. Orton... Be the man. Act the part, dress the part, and come on Sundays with your game face on. We need a QB. (WE = Bear Fan Nation) You have the potential to be THE GUY. We are tired of hearing how great the offense looks in mini-camps and in preseason. Get out there and live up to your potential. Stop getting your picture taken tryin to feel up hot women in bars with that drunken, sweaty look on your face. Get in the gym, so you don't under throw Hester anymore. Slam your fist on Lovie's door and tell him you need 1 or 2 more receivers... weither it is Torry Holt, Marvin Harrison, Darrius Hayward-Bey, Hakeem Nicks, or Jerry Rice out of Retirement... I don't care as long it seems like you do!
Act like THE GUY and I can guarentee you have at least one more supporter.

Orton
I agree with most of what was said in the original message. The “Game Manager” label came during his rookie year when the Bears kept using that term because they threw him in with no preparation. Remember that Grossman got hurt, then the immortal Chad Hutchinson was annointed the starter until the very end of training camp when our great coaching/management staff decided he stunk and they cut him. Orton was the only option left but he never was given any prep time prior to the season starting with the number one (I use that term loosely) offense. I think that Orton has been frustrated that the Bear coaches put the clamps on and never really committed to him until Rex showed last season that he would never be the QB our brain trust thought he would be. Kyle looked very good for the first part of the season until he got hurt. his desire to rush back onto the field too soon is what hurt his reputation last year. He wasn’t ready to come back from that ankle injury. Prior to that he was one of the top rated QB’s in the league. I say let’s give him a chance to show those flashes again and I think he’ll come through.

This is Ortons year.
I am a firm believer that Orton is going to RISE LIKE THE SUN this year. I myself was very excited when we drafted Orton, he was the big, smart QB we were looking for, that excitement fizzled some but is now back. This is the year, his time to shine. He has to improve that deep ball, I’m sure that he is aware of that. But he definitely has the goods.

Hear me out...
I LOVE Kyle. He is talented. He IS a game manager. but look at the talant AROUND him. The O line is crap. Let’s face it, one of the worst in the NFL. How can we expect the guy to throw downfield when all we have is awesome TEs and ZERO WRs? Devin Hester should be a KR/PR ONLY! He HAD/HAS flash and talent, but a #1 WR he is not.
The thing about Chicago fans is that 99% are impatient. If the guy isn’t a Pro Bowler in 2 years, he is junk. I dissagree. I think Grossman could have been the man if we let him develop. Give him some breaks and not treat him like he just ran over the family pet. Same goes for Orton. The only way he can become The Guy is if we treat him like THE GUY, and not bash him for having a crap line protecting him, or crap coaches/Offinsive coordinators. The playbook is only so big with the offensive talent we put on the field.
I say all Bears fans hsould act like #18 is OUR GUY. Stop talking about bringing in someone else, give him the ball, and get him some people that will keep him off the turf. Get him a few WRs so we can SPREAD THE FIELD for once, otherwise #22 will be a workhorse and won’t make it past Week 6.
I love NECKBEARD. And so do the ladies. Give him the ball and let him lead this team. His peers nominated him as Captain. that SHOULD mean SOMETHING??
He IS OUR GUY, for now….

Our o-line wasn't one of the worst.
11th in passing and 24th rushing, puts us in the middle. And Hester is proving to be a good receiver, easy number 2, close to number 1. #22 will be our work horse regardless and Kyle Orton is the man. Are there any QB’s who aren’t Captain?

Orton wasn't
as good in college as most would like to believe. Now I know some of you will attack me with Drew Brees when I say this but most of Orton’s success was due to Joe Tillers offensive scheme. I am in no way a Purdue supporter but I do know that it was referred to as basketball on grass. Kyle ran the spread, the defenses he faced were not even close to NFL caliber so yeah he could rack on some mind boggling stats, but stats mean absolutly nothing and they don’t translate. Grossman had potential but I think the Bears had done all they could to give him opportunities to show he was worthy of staying with them. I hope that Orton is successful if he is our starting QB, but I’m just not sold on him being the face(neck beard) of the franchise.
If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

Orton "Franchise QB"
Let’s face it, Orton had nothing but garbage around him. He did the best he could with what he had, and when he got injured, he never was the same. The Bears rushed him back too early because Rex was bad in the Tennessee game at home.
The Bears got Orton a new RT in Kevin Shaffer, who’s great in the run blocking, but OK to below average in the pass protection. Shaffer, IMO is a stopgap until the Bears draft a new RT, which could happen in this draft. The Bears also signed Frank Omiyale, who will play LG. The Bears got bigger and better on the O-Line, and I expect improvement next season.
Orton needs some WRs that can beat jams, can separate better against CBs, run good routes and some height. The Bears desperately need a possession receiver who can move the chains, who Kenny Britt and Hakeem Nicks can do. Brian Robiske is someone the Bears should consider. The Bears need a legit #1 WR, and IMO Hester is no better than a #2. DHB could be that #1 WR, but he’s too risky as a prospect.
