Todd McShay Says Darrius Heyward-Bey For The Bears On Draft Day.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, the wide-out from Maryland, 22 years old, 6'2", 206 lbs and as everyone should already know runs a blazing 4.3 second 40 yard dash.

If the Bears are fortunate enough to actually get this guy with the 18th pick in the draft, the Bears will all of a sudden appear to have a very dangerous offense.

Talk about spreading the defense, Heyward-Bey and Devin Hester? fahgitaboutit! Throw in Greg Olsen and Matt Forte, what? Holy smokes Bat Man! These are some serious weapons.

The Chicago Bears may actually be on to something here. Of course were going to need a couple more pieces to add to the o-line and even if one of those pieces is John St. Clair, the line appears to be very workable.

The Bears are close. I'm buying it.

i think todd mcshay is right about this...

if DHB is on the board at 18.

he had the best combine of all WRs.

____itaboutit!? that is inappropriate.

but not as bad as you saying the bears are “close”. Close to what!?! I hope i’m wrong but DHB or no DHB, as i see it right now they are not “close” to winning the Super Bowl.

I think DHB is gonna be good (total hunch and for no reason other than his combine performance), but will be pissed if we pass on Harvin and he ends up being all world. do we still take DHB if Maclin is on the board?

by No It All on Mar 3, 2009 8:27 PM CST reply actions

Hopefully

we won’t have to make the Maclin/DHB decision bc it’s close. As far as Harvin goes we need a TRUE WR w/ some size and no durability issues. Harvin’s good but I’d pass on him. And we’re “close” to the playoffs, a playmaker or two away. If you get in the playoffs you’ve got a chance to win it all.

"URLACHER IS GOD"

by Acreman20 on Mar 3, 2009 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

I will indulge this...

because i think this “close” stuff is bullshit. If we are playmaker or 2 away from the playoffs close is no the operative word. First, my patience is wearing thin on JA’s ability or willingness to acquire playmakers. And then we would only be “close” to the playoffs (paraphrasing a little)

“If you get in the playoffs you’ve got a chance to win it all.” yea sure. kinda. but not really. It is called a “wild card” for a reason. A team with the mentality of trying to squeak into the playoffs is not close to anything but stuck in mediocrity. Management needs to act like 2006 was not a fluke before I believe it wasn’t.

by No It All on Mar 3, 2009 11:02 PM CST up reply actions

Maclin all the way

if he’s there at #18. He’s much more polished than DHB.

You don't know much but that's o.k., I got's ta teach ya. Mr.No It All

Considering the offense the Bears put on the field last year and how close we still came to the playoffs, the Bears are close. A receiver and an o-lineman away from having a good offense.

Let’s continue class, The first two receivers to go are Crabtree and Maclin, the Bears MIGHT have a shot at DHB or Harvin. But if for some crazy reason Maclin is still available of course we should take Maclin. And there is still the possibility that DHB is gone.

close to playoffs DOES NOT= close to a Super Bowl

in fact all it means is that you are 3-4 wins against the NFLs best from being close. teams that made it to the divisional championship games are close. the playoffs are not/should not be an NFL team’s goal, but merely a formality on the way to the Super Bowl. The Bears needed to win 5 more tough games in a row last year to win the Super Bowl. that is not close.

by No It All on Mar 4, 2009 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

You can make it sound as hard as you like....

but the bottom line is that if you make it to the playoffs you are close to the super bowl, (see the 9-7 Arizona Cardinals).

the logic that since the Cardinals had a 9-7 record and were close to winning the Super Bowl, therefore the Bears 9-7 record means they are close to winning the Super Bowl is such egregiously flawed logic that it is pathetic . clearly that is lost on you. you are done.

Anything can happen in the playoffs once you're there

Parity still rules in the NFL, and it’s proven every year. Some team, most of the time a wildcard team makes plenty of noise in the playoffs, and happens to win the SB sometimes. Let’s see…

Broncos ’97
Ravens ’00
Steelers ’05
Giants ’07

i understand your point...

but it does not lead to the conclusion you want. the fact that anything can happen in the playoffs once you are there simply flatly unequivocally is not the same thing as being “close” to winning the Super Bowl. in addition all wild card teams are not created equally so extrapolating the success of previous wild card teams so that it applies to the Bears IF they even make it to the wild card is ridiculous.

by No It All on Mar 4, 2009 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

No, it definitely means they're close.

If they make the playoffs, then it can be construed as being close. The head coach can come out and say…hey guys we’re real close because several WC teams have won the SB (6 totat), and even more have made it to the “big” game (9 overall). Not only that, typically WC teams are running on a “hot” streak because they had to run the table to make it there. Did you think the Bears were close to the SB when they wen’t in ‘06? I think there was a lot of doubt because how the playoffs wen’t the year prior.

you're not close until you actually are close

6 of 86= 6.9%

86= 43 SBs. 2 teams in each.

So the point you peeps are trying to make is that the Bears are close to having a 6.9% chance to win the Super Bowl. YAY! who needs receivers, a quarterback, a decent offensive line or an effective secondary when you are that close. get out my face cause that’s retarded. Optimism is one thing but this “close” lunacy is ridiculous.

Never said they were close

My point is if a team makes the playoffs, that team is “close” to the SB. If you can say anything about the Bears, it’s that they’re not far away, but not close either. Probably somewhere towards the middle of the pack. With that said, if they get a few impact players in the draft they have a solid nucleus to get to the playoffs.

ok...

but they are not acquiring impact players in free agency because they are “close”. I do not believe they are capable of identifying or willing to pay to the $ to get a few impact players in the draft. getting 1 would exceed my expectations (hello Matt Forte). if they prove me wrong i will be happy, kind of a win win. people are getting caught up on 9-7 records

1. Cards finished 12-8 because they won 3 playoff games and lost the Super Bowl. so 9-7 for the cards is a snapshot being extrapolated to make unwarranted comparisons to the bears.

2. all 9-7 (9-7 for the argument’s sake) teams are not created equally. using that win:loss ratio to prove that the Bears are “close” is stupid.

by No It All on Mar 4, 2009 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

Records don't tell the whole story

A 3-13 team can make the playoffs the very next year in football, not many sports have the kind of parity the NFL has. A string of bad luck, lots of injuries, controversy on and off the field can derail a team. I bet the Seahawks will come back and win the West this year now they’re healthy and have added some decent pieces.

Here's my take

If you win the division convincingly then your close, but if your a wild card team your not far away but I wouldn’t say their close by any means to winning a super bowl.

Now as far as the Bears go, don’t get me wrong I am a die hard Bears fan and there is nothing more I would love than to see a Super Bowl. But, I truly believe we have far too many gaps on our roster.
-offensive line
-safety
-outside line backer (not a fan of Nick Roach at all)
-uh wide receiver? I’m sorry I love Devin Hester, but you are no No. 1 wide receiver. I think you would be best as the slot receiver and focusing more on your return dutys, but No. 2 I can live with.

As far as WR in the draft goes,
-I am going to catch a lot of grief over this and I might be wrong, Jeremy Maclin won’t be the next big thing. I think Hakeem Nicks will be the best WR in this years draft class, but I would also like DHB also. I think the best thing to do would be to draft in this order:
-WR
-T
-S
-OLB
-QB
-G
-DE

by DaBears2234 on Mar 4, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with you

Nicks will be the best wr out of this class. Would be perfect for us. Playmaker, great hands, guy would be a first down machine. 18 would be too high for him though.

JA is a horses arse and will probably pass on anyone. Another low brow play like our new OL who was gonna get cut and we go ahead and trade for him, and pay more money than he’ll probably be worth.

Check out the track record – Grossman – Benson, jeez it’s miracle he can find his ass with both hands. Is he even breathing? Seriously, it looks like he’s asleep, maybe a coma.

Todd – Love the play – DHB would be AWESOME and may even give them hope to go the next level, which by the way is Division Champs. With all the other moves in our division this off season, we should keep our hopes high and expectations low.

are you serious

granted ja hasnt really gone out of his way through free agency in his tenure, He has still done a pretty granted JA hasnt done good job putting together this team through free agency but I believe when it comes to the draft he hasnt done pretty well. You through out names like ced ben and rex ( who by the way were both on a superbowl team,) he has also drafted the like of lance briggs, peanut tillman, tommie harris, devin hester, and matt forte. Everyone rags on him for sucking at drafting offense, however he has done pretty well at drafting defense, which I believe is the reason he got the job, chicago is and has been first and foremost a defensive team. Yes, our defense has sucked as of late but I dont think that was ja’s fault he put together a superbowl caliber defense just two years ago, the step back we have taken I believe can mostly be attributed to injuries and poor coaching. So step back there ace and place blame where it should be placed.

I can't be the only one

I can’t be the only one that believes there is only slightly greater than zero percent chance that the Bears actually end up having a first round pick. This year just feels like one of those typical Angelo years where he trades down to pick a “diamond in the rough” or a couple value picks – you know, like Daniel Manning or Grossman/Haynes.

LOL

by Santos Sorrow on Mar 4, 2009 6:05 AM CST reply actions

I wouldn't mind that...

There really isn’t a superstar player who is going to be available at 18. Plus we have a lot of holes, so another couple of high picks would help the team add depth and talent.

by chase17 on Mar 4, 2009 6:38 AM CST up reply actions

I am not sold

on DHB. He is very, very fast. But so far he hasn’t shown that he is a football player, all we know is he’s a track star.

He didn’t have much of a qb last year, I understand that. But to expect him to go from pedestrian numbers in college to first-round pick numbers in the pros, when he’s coming into a sub-par passing offense with a sub-par qb seems a leap of faith to me.

What is the difference between him and Troy Williamson, who similarly shot up draft boards because he was so fast? Neither did much in college, and Williamson has proven that he’s not a football player. The only difference I see is that DHB is an inch taller and a little heavier.

I do not want this dude. He has bust written all over him. If they take him, I hope I’m wrong, but I’d rather they just don’t take him. I wouldn’t mind taking a chance on a player like this in the third round or so and see if he could turn into a football player (like Barnard Berrian), but in the first, with all that guaranteed money? No way.

Oher has been getting different reviews from different scouts.

I think he could play LT or RT, but there are some concerns about his speed. He often times got beat by speed rushers, and often got called for holding.

He will definitely benefit from NFL coaching, and has experience playing guard (his freshman year) and some scouts are even throwing it out there that if OT isn’t his thing in the NFL, he could end up being an All-Pro OG.

If he is available, I’d take him in a heartbeat. Whatever position they decide on would work for me. He will be an excellent OLineman in the NFL.

That would be the big mistake we want to avoid.

Thinking that our line is fine. I would like to see us get a first or second round lineman and resign St.Clair. Then we would be looking strong.

St.Clair

is starting to sound more like St.Jude

St. Clair gives us depth.

You want to go into the season with what we have? O.k., let us have one injury on the line and we would be in big trouble. And not to mention that we still are not sure that Chris Williams is ready. And Omialye has only started one game. You think the o-line is good to go? Your dreaming.

so he gives us depth but not a strarter role

if that’s the case, we can draft for depth in later rounds instead of signing a 32-year old mediocre lineman.

It would be very wise for the Bears to sign St.Clair.

He is very durable and he can play any position. It would be wise to have St.Clair. Injuries are bound to happen and St.Clair would give us experienced depth.

I don't know how anyone could

have faith in any of our lineman, except maybe Kreutz. None of the guys we have have played above passable at the NFL level. Williams is a high pick, but has a bad back, which is easily the worst possible injury a lineman could have (except maybe decapitation).

We have no RT (Omiyale is not a RT or the Panthers wouldn’t have moved up last year for Otah or moved Gross to RT the game Otah missed, our guard play has sucked (as evidenced by the low YPC our RBs have had the last few years), Kreutz’s play is falling off, and we have an expensive question mark at LT.

I debate what we should do in the first as well, but it’s mostly because we have holes at so many critical positions.

If you had a choice between Percy harvin or DHB....

who would you take?

O.k. but if you HAD to take one.

Harvin or DHB

Well

not Harvin because we need size at the other wideout position. Although Harvin is a playmaker which DHB has not shown yet..

by tfrabotta on Mar 4, 2009 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

I like DHB.

Yes, because he is so fast. His speed would spread the defense making opportunities for Hester, Olsen and Forte.

open it up

so orton can underthrow them?

by mike b on Mar 4, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Harvin

because he is versatile and a proven playmaker. He’s a football player. DHB hasn’t done anything special outside the combine.

No

Harvin is Reggie Bush minus the bulk, talent, and an actual position.

Minus the talent?

Your joking right?

+1 ChiFan...

Rec’d that comment.

I would have said Harvin is Pat White, minus the throwing ability and talent, but you done good there…

You must be a Gator Hater.

Of course, LSU, I knew you must have something personal against him.

No way...

I don’t root against the Gators unless the are playing the Tigers. Nothing personal against Harvin. But, the analogies are dead on. I like the kid, and maybe he’ll be fine in the NFL. But in my opinion, he is not a top-half first round selection. He’d work best as a Colt or Patriot or some team similar that could use him in the slot.

I just don't understand how you could co sign what ChiFan said.

That Harvin has no talent. If you can’t see that this kid has talent than I would say you must have something personal against him. Like being pro LSU would help me to understand. Because Percy Harvin has tremendous talent.

Let me rephrase

He has talent. It won’t translate to the NFL. I can promise you that.

Trade down

Even know I don’t normally like a GM to trade down, Angelo admitted it to the public that the Bears had more holes than they’ve ever had. If the value isn’t there at #18 trading down makes sense. Most likely he’ll move to the top of the 2nd, and from there he can possibly nab Nicks and Loadholt. I also wouldn’t put it past JA to draft a DE with the #18 pick. Although, that wouldn’t happen unless Jerry added a RT in free-agency.

No one hates you anymore.

They are now to the point of tolerating you because you wouldn’t go away. Like the homeless puppy that just won’t leave no matter how many times you kick it.

And at this rate, by the time the season starts, everyone will like you.

So just hang in there sport!

I feel like God has me here for a reason.

And no matter how much I feel that everyone might hate me I still feel a common bond and duty to stand with and protect my fellow followers of the Bears. I love you guys. And you already know how far I am willing to go for my team and it’s fans, no matter how much we may disagree, when the sh1t hits the fan you can count on me.

Well

I think we can all agree that nobody had more talent coming out of college the past 20 years than Reggie Bush and how’s that going for him?
