Orlando Pace is visiting the Bears

Free-agent OT Orlando Pace is meeting with the Chicago Bears on Monday, reports NFL.com’s Steve Wyche. The only other team Pace has met with since being cut by the St. Louis Rams is the Baltimore Ravens.

Pace hit the open market earlier this month after being released by the Rams in a move that saved St. Louis $6 million in cap space.

Pace has ties to some of the Bears coaches, and the Bears need Offensive Line depth.  Rotoworld is saying he'll compete with Chris Williams at Left Tackle, but I think he'll play Right Tackle for the Bears. If the Bears sign him, this would make Shaffer a backup/swing tackle, and when Pace gets injured (which will happen, he's old and injury prone), Shaffer or Omiyale can play RT.

I am actually impressed..

that the Bears are working this hard to bolster the offensive line. It is definitely necessary and this is what a smart franchise would do, I’m just glad it’s our franchise doing it. I’m not saying that they will pick up Pace, but if they did I would be very pleasantly surprised. It opens up my mind to many possibilities in the draft that make me smile.

I won't hold my breathe...

But I hope it happens. The only problem will be the $$$, as is always the case with our franchise.

by Bearsguy34 on Mar 30, 2009 4:42 PM CDT reply actions

Shouldn't be an issue

Pace and his agent probably know by now that they have virtually no leverage. His age, declined play, and durability concerns dictate that he’ll be inexpensive to say the least.

I would love it

Making three moves on the offensive line? Didn’t think Jerry had it in him to realize how bad he had screwed it up. Get it done!

if he's cheap

it’d be smart. pace is still quite good if he’s got anything left in the tank. but i’d be even more happy if another former st. louis ram, tory holt, was signed.

Wow. I don't even know what to say.

On one hand I like this move… if you’re a team like last year’s Ravens (Willie Anderson).

On the other hand, I feel signing Pace would prevent them from selecting a top ranked Tackle (which is what we need: young bookends to build from).

At this stage Orlando Pace is Fred Miller only with fancier pedigree

Pace isn’t a very good football player anymore. And his dedication and commitment to craft has been called into question the last three years. I take a pass.

That said, pursuit of Pace makes me wonder if Chris Williams is garbage and this is Angelo’s sublimal way of addressing the issue.

by BLou on Mar 30, 2009 6:12 PM CDT reply actions

I always wanted to be Rams North

All kidding aside, quality depth on the line is a good idea. I think Pace might do better if he didn’t have to keep up with the rigors of being the LT all the time.

I’d like to know how good he is in the locker room…you’d like to think that he could be a good tutor to Williams, but I honestly don’t remember hearing anything about whether or not he took that kind of role in St. Louis. Certainly Barron didn’t develop while he was there, although that could be for other reasons.

In any case, good thought. Holt would be better.

Holt

I’d love for Holt to be a Bear.

by Chicagosportsfan on Mar 30, 2009 7:23 PM CDT reply actions

Not sure

about Holt. He can’t separate like he used to, and is obviously not a good blocker. I don’t think he’d be a good fit in Chicago’s scheme.

We need a big possession WR, like Moose.

Someone who can be a good target on big downs, regardless of the separation… and who will block in the running game. Hester’s not going to give us any blocking… and I don’t know what Bennett will give us.

Pace would be great for us for a year.

He might be old, but I am sure he can still play the game and he is a BIG GUY which is exactly what we need. I would love to see this addition to the Bears for next season and holy $!@$, JA is surprising the hell out of me especially if he can get him signed. As many have already stated, Holt next?

Pace says he is a left tackle, period...

So if the Bears ARE indeed interested in Orlando Pace then that tells me they are not sold on Chris Williams, or Williams is in line to move to Right Tackle.

by BLou on Mar 31, 2009 12:22 PM CDT reply actions

no

they want pace to be a right tackle. just like the ravens wanted him to be right tackle. he’s too old and less agile to play against right ends anymore. but he’s still got the upper body strength to play RT

Not much decline?

How can a LT only allow two sacks last year on a bad team, and still be considered “washed up” or in decline?

Regardless of where he is right now,

we need long-term solutions to our OLine. Pace might be able to contribute, but it would be nice to see us get younger…

Agreed

I think he would be a stop-gap tackle at best. Maybe that’s why it’s taken so long for him to sign; teams want him for a one-year deal only, and he’s looking for a longer one.

We are younger

we replaced Tait and St Clair with Shaffer and Omiyale. That drops about 10 years from the line. Omiyale and Williams have no starting experience, and Beekman has little. You could make the argument that the Bears now need experience, not youth on the line.

I also mentioned long-term solution. And I just don’t believe Shaffer and Omiyale are long-term solutions.

If we were just missing a LT to contend for the SB, then it’d be different.
