Angelo the professor?

230842_f260_medium

Move over Greg Maddux, Jerry Angelo's in the house.

In this article from Chicagobears.com, JA gives very long-winded and well-informed answers on why he hasn't made any major moves in free-agency.  His responses to Larry Mayer's questions will not be popular amongst us die-hards, but one thing is for sure: he's certainly a very intelligent man and does things with great conviction (at least in his own mind, that is).

I"m not sure what the hell is going on with Jerry.

Sometimes I feel like he is mocking us by just sitting there and doing nothing while all of the big time players sign contracts with other teams. Why? Because he can? I don’t know. I’m just hoping that he knows what he’s doing and eventually I can breath a sigh of relief after I understand what the f**k is going on.

Amusing

How much of a priority is upgrading the wide receiver position either in free agency or the draft?
JA: Naturally, we’re going to look at that real hard, in all likelihood in the draft.

Well, that’s refreshing Jerry, and probably the best way to win now.

But honestly, all he did was reiterate everything we already knew. We know we will look at a WR in the draft. But really, JA? You feel good about our core? Davis, Bennett, Hester…who else? Rideau? A bunch of nobodies from the practice squad? Really? Really?

And all JA did was sidestep the questions with “Well good players are too expensive.”

by Haightminow on Mar 4, 2009 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

that's a tough question

they both are burners

i would probably go with Maclin, seeing as he got 102 receptions last season against some of the toughest defenses in the land, and he is a bit more of a polished product, i’m always a bit wary of players that receive a lot of recognition simply for performing well at the combine (like Vernon Davis a few years back) they way DHB has

but i’m not sure he will still be on the board at 18 let alone if professor jerry would even draft him, he seems to hold something against the talented players

by SamuraiMike50 on Mar 4, 2009 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

Maclin...

He already has played and produced with a weak armed quarterback, Chase Daniel, plus he is very good at generating YAC. It would give them serious speed at WR with Hester, Bennet, and Maclin. But that also the speed thing works with DHB.

Plus, like SamuraiMike50 said he is getting drafted on performance in games, not pure potential.

JA would love to get a do-over after letting him walk last year. Why not franchise him? Obviously he was good enough to get the tag and pay him top dollar. He had his best numbers of his career with two bad QBs. Imagine if he was catching passes from another fairly bad QB in Orton? Think about it….

Jerry Angelo hasn't been active in free agency because the pickings are slim and overpriced

I think it boils down to just that. Lets face it, the available free agents were very limited in terms of quality. And it would have been irresponsible to pay crazy money for TJ Housh.

Last thing the Bears need is to pick up the cast-offs of other organizations. We all saw how well Marty Booker and Brandon Lloyd worked at wide receiver for example.

Bears have a crapload of MAJOR needs. Chance Angelo can address all these needs in the draft with talent that is ready to contribute meaningfully as rookies is slim. Hence why I shall continue to insist that the Bears are in a rebuilding mode but Jerry Angelo just hasn’t cared to admit it publicly.

by BLou on Mar 4, 2009 9:47 PM CST reply actions

He's going to add a couple of pieces

There’s too many open roster spots available to fill them all in the draft. FS and WR are the most likely additions in free-agency. St. Clair and Jones may sign as well.

by propheteer on Mar 4, 2009 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

I understand that

But with an ever increasing salary cap and $34 million under cap why couldn’t you splash and make a front loaded contract with a guy like Housh (much like how the ‘Skins front loaded Haynesworth’s contract, its basically a 4-yr deal) then you could sign him for big money and cut him if need-be in two years without taking a huge cap hit. Is that too hard to do?

by Sam Householder on Mar 4, 2009 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not sure of the cap (hit) ramifications.

Angelo believes in the draft, and it realizes it’s less expensive to acquire players via the draft. They’re younger, cheaper, and hopefully better depending on the learning curve. Free-agency is not always the answer, actually it’s usually not the answer in building a winning team. I don’t always agree with it, but it does make plenty of sense. Most of the successful teams in the NFL are built through the draft, and supplemented with free-agents and trades. With that being said, WR is one position I believe needs to be addressed in free-agency, especially in regards to the Bears. I’m not sure why JA wouldn’t consider overpaying for Coles or Housh since the Bears are in a “win now” mode.

by propheteer on Mar 4, 2009 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

I couldn’t say it better. Don’t get me wrong, you build with the draft and put in the finishing touches in FA. FA can be great to get competition and positions that can be harder for rookies to pick up. Hm what are two of those positions? I don’t know, maybe RT (unless you have a top 5-10 pick you usually don’t find a lot of plug-in right away guys) and WR (One of the harder positions to transition to in the NFL) So why not try to get better with a FA at one of those positions?

by Sam Householder on Mar 4, 2009 11:31 PM CST up reply actions

Many perfect players for the Bears have gone......

……to other teams. Dawkins would have been nice for a year or two, or Jim Leonhard. Houshmandzadeh would have looked good out ther at WR. Hell Bart Scott would have made a nice Sam linebacker opposite Briggs. Stupid @ss Angelo has let player after player go by waiting for the next bargain. Meanwhile we sit around 20 mil under the cap as I understand. I am sick of this scrap it together attitude in Chicago, especially on offense.

JERRY ANGELOS MISSION IN LIFE SHOULD BE TO BRING A GREAT QUARTERBACK TO CHICAGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weather it be via the draft or trade or free agency, we should have traded out number one pick to New England for Matt Cassel in my opinion. Get another proven Quarterback Jerry, or get a potential great QB from the draft, dont give up. Going with Bret Bainey (I probably spelled his name wrong because I don’t know who he is) and Caleb Haine backing up a servicable at best Kyle Orton does not cut it in my opinion.

by dabears4417 on Mar 4, 2009 10:03 PM CST reply actions

I disagree

By his actions Jerry Angelo is sending out two loud and clear messages. One, the free agency crop was thin and overpriced. Two, the Bears are rebuilding but don’t care to admit it publicly.

Angelo doesn’t need to be told the Bears have MULTIPLE needs to fill. You also don’t have to be the head cashier at Wal-Mart to understand that there is no way the Bears are going to find immediate answers to all of their position needs in the April draft.

by BLou on Mar 4, 2009 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

off to a flying stop

I’m 4 sentences into his 1st response and can’t go any further. What doesn’t make sense is not bringing in a veteran to compete with Orton because we tried that last year with Rex. Yes Kyle competed with Rex last year, but NO we did not have 2 legitimate NFL starting quarterbacks competing last year. If that were true Rex would be starting because JA leveraged the last 6 years (most egregiously Super Bowl XLI) on his faith in Rex Grossman. All the while Kyle Orton (10-5 Rookie guy) warmed the bench. To now prolong the agony by invoking Rex’s past essence as a “starter” as the reason for not bringing in a veteran free agent quarterback is inexcusable.

by No It All on Mar 4, 2009 10:41 PM CST reply actions

I don't understand either

What’s the harm in bringing Garcia, Leftwich, Losman, or Simms in as your 2nd stringer? I don’t feel comfortable with Hanie starting if Orton suffers an injury. Do you?

maybe they draft a QB

but who on the Bears can evaluate QB talent? definitely not JA.

FAs:
Garcia- yes Leftwich-maybe Losman/Simms- not acceptable

I read more and my favorite part is when he says Cassle only did well because he was on a team that ya know actually has good management and has acquired talented players over the years. F the Patriots and F JA for being the GM of my favorite team and kissing the patriot’s ass like that and most importantly for not making the Bears a pretty good football team with a good supporting cast and a great system.

by No It All on Mar 4, 2009 11:08 PM CST up reply actions

Possible WR

Angelo wants to get a #1 WR from the draft, since the Bears have 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s. Could it be possible that he may go after a real #1 with a little age on him, like Tory Holt if he is released? I know he isn’t what he was 5 years ago, but I would rather have him on the roster, along with a WR from the draft. Think about how much the current WR’s could benefit from having a player of that caliber on the team to show them what it takes to be a top notch player in this league.

by VABear85 on Mar 4, 2009 10:48 PM CST reply actions

Tory Holt

is due to recieve a roster bonus Mar. 17th. They have very little time to either cut him or keep him.

by luckie815 on Mar 5, 2009 2:43 AM CST up reply actions

age

Yeah, TJ Housh and Brian Dawkins are both old, so we’re not interested. Then explain to me why we signed Muhsin Muhammed and Marty Booker? They were both as old if not older than TJ I believe. And, why are we interested in Darren Sharper’s old ass?

I agree with him on the QB stuff, but to not at least call Jay Cutler’s agent seemed a little silly. As does not picking up ANY wide receiver. You can’t fix everything with free agency, but WR is by far the biggest need on the team (at least in my opinion). We literally have nothing there. Even signing Bryant Johnson would’ve made me happy—they’ve had a thing for him the last few years but I guess they must think Rod Marineli is gonna fix the offense too.

Agreed

This year’s free agency class is bad and way overpriced. The Bears do indeed have many holes to fill…Offensive Tackle, Wide Receiver, Safety, Defensive End, Guard, QUARTERBACK.

We all know the Bears won’t be able to address all their critical needs in the draft. Plus, first year players dont’ typically make much of an impact their rookie campaigns even if they do end up being inspired picks down the road.

Jerry Angelo is sending out signal that the Bears are in rebuilding mode. Most Bear fans aren’t willing to accept that diagnosis and instead want to scream at Angelo for not overpaying for the free agent cast-offs of other organizations.

by BLou on Mar 5, 2009 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

QB, Guard, and DE

are not really dire needs. I do agree about the rest listed, but they can win with what they have currently on the roster in regards to those positions. Marinelli will help tremendously with the D-line, and Orton will have an entire TC to develop the deep ball.

DON'T YOU FIND IT IRONIC

JA hasn’t brought in anyone with more skills than himself. Maybe he’s paranoid, having a player with a skillset overshadowing his own lackluster set may just be too imitimidationg for the him. That’s prophetic.

The FA Market is shit!

I’m tired of Bears fans complaining about not signing any of this crap! Just relax.

The Bears build through the draft thats just their history. I think JA wanted some players but they all got franchised. Oh well. Move on!

I say JA get your offensive talent through the draft now before the defense turns ancient.

Next season’s draft I’m sure will be about defensive youth movement.

So maybe the FA pool will be thicker for your prized WR’s. We can hope. For now I think they have to see what they drafted in Earl Bennett and get Rideau into the mix. Draft a number one WR.

Hester, Bennett, Rideau, Draft pick, FA, Olsen, Clark….. I think I can handle that for one season.
