Terrell Owens released! Should the Bears Consider?

Terrell-owens_medium

This just in, ESPN has reported that Terrell Owens has been released by the Cowboys.  Do the Bear's organization go after him?  Can you just imagine a Kyle Orton-TO tandem?  Those were actually joke questions and I pray to god that we don't pick him up.  This guy is talented, but just way too much ego to be put on a team for a sustained period of time.  But seriously, who really is out there left for us to sign other than Boldin?

What do the Bears have to lose?

They’re in a win now mode, and Lovie’s job is on the line. It’s a big risk, but the Bears are a mediocre team at best right now.

Veteran laden team

The Bears may be mediocre in their current state, but I don’t think they’re in a rebuilding year.

mediocre veterans

jsut because you have old people on your team doesn’t make you win now. it may be win now for those guys cause they’re old, but i think win now also insinuates a realistic chance as well. maybe not.

Lovie needs to win now

or it’s his job. He’s not looking at it as a rebuilding year I assure you that. They are plenty of veterans on this team that have won before, there’s no reason to believe they can’t duplicate that with an infusion of youth.

I doubt TO would want to play for us... so people saying they don't want him as a Bear is funny to me

if he was willing (which i doubt) the Bears would be lucky to have him. what’s he gonna do bitch about the Bears not having a qb? that is no newsflash to anybody…. he’d soon realize the general response to such antics will be a resounding no duh now go play. TO on one side and Hester on the other is not bad. Getting cut like this and bashed in the media is only going to motivate this guy. Maybe he develops a sense of loyalty for the team that shows faith in him when nobody else does (sounds Lovieesqe) I’m not saying he isn’t childish, but if you want to win football games TO will help.

Not to mention it will force Chicago to finally get a good QB!!

speaking of newsflash

how much more tension can he bring when both the Chicago media and half the fans want to kill the QB at any given time? I think half of what TO does is overblown. I mean, he’s got a huge ego and the media often tries to Joan of Arc his arse.

He’s got issues, insecurities…and that is where most of his problems have come from. He isn’t Michael Irvin or any number of 1990s Cowboys getting arrested for cocaine (buying or trafficking); he doesn’t beat his significant other; he doesn’t get arrested twice in a month for driving a motor vehicle with alcohol swimming in his blood.

He doesn’t get picked up for running a dog fighting; he doesn’t get arrested for solicitation of a prostitute though he’s a man of God, the night before the Super Bowl; he doesn’t hide in the trunk of his car after his wife is found killed; he’s never had a murder trial where his friends are convicted.

And he doesn’t demand to be let go, sign a new contract to stay a year later, and then wrap his car around some cement barriers on the Dan Ryan, and then flee the scene.

by ethan a on Mar 5, 2009 7:19 AM CST up reply actions

I think you only get a year out of TO...

before the same stuff starts happening again. If he was pissy about Whitten then he would be ultra-pissy about our TE-centric, check-down laden offense. Orton would probably only be able to give TO 1 or 2 touchdown chances per game and if they weren’t perfectly on target we would see a tantrum on the sidelies.

I don't know.....

Remember the pass to Davis at the end of the Atlanta game?

Pretty damn good throw!

by scespy12 on Mar 5, 2009 12:30 AM CST up reply actions

I think we can have a better passing game....

if and only if we improve our offensive line. I think KO has shown he can make throws when he has time. No matter who we put back there at QB, they were gonna fail because we couldn’t give them enough time to make a play. I don’t think anybody can deny how shitty our line was. Until we fix this, we won’t have a smooth offense.

by aznsensation on Mar 5, 2009 12:38 AM CST up reply actions

well, there would be no sane excuse not to throw him the ball 10 times a game

oh right, ron turner. ok, so at least in theory, given our dearth of talent at the WR spot, there would be no reason not to throw TO the ball a lot, which would help keep him happy.

yes yes yes

by ifuwannacrownem on Mar 5, 2009 6:43 AM CST reply actions

why

he’s been run out of three teams now, despite very good production all three places. He has left a path of destruction in his place, with a completely divded and dysfuntional locker room. Why would that be different at his 4th team? We don’t have any vocal leaders who would keep him in check.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Mar 5, 2009 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

He can finally.....

Be the team’s obvious leader. He’s wanted that his whole career, and who the heck do the Bears have now who is an actual team leader? He can come here and be obviously the most talented athlete on the team.
And I do think Orton can be a pretty decent QB, if he has a little bit of time, and a real go-to guy who can catch it anywhere on the field as opposed to dumping off to anticipated screens.

by Robthecubsfan on Mar 7, 2009 2:05 AM CST up reply actions

a different attitude?

Why?

Chances are his attitude would be even worse, being that he would have a significantly worse quarterback throwing to him.

Why

because he’s 36 that’s why. i don’t think anybody in the locker room would be affected by some senile old man who’s on the decline. just tell him to shut his old ass up.

We don’t have any vocal leaders who would keep him in check.

the Bears aren’t vocal, their physical. see benson.

I heard that worked well every other place he has been.

Seriously… why would not playing with Romo or McNabb, and instead playing with a worse QB, cause him to have a better attitude?

you just answered your own question

if he decides he wants to come to Chicago, don’t you think that would be the first indicator he has a different attitude? coming to a team where there is little to no pro-bowl talent. and like i said he’s 36 and he just got unceremoniously cut from a team he wanted to play with. something that’s never happened to him before.

by ifuwannacrownem on Mar 5, 2009 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

His attitude won't change

but he’s worth the risk. Just sign him to a one-year deal, heavy incentives for playing time, and if he mouths off just cut him. He holds absolutely no leverage because of his past.

again...

… you didn’t really answer the question. You originally claimed that not playing with Romo or McNabb would mean a different (and you implied better) attitude.

How so?

You think that simply by coming here, he would have a different attitude?

Nope

Childress and TO had a very “rocky” relationship in Philly. At one point, TO told him not to talk to him during the entire last season they were together.

Zero chance Terrell Owens joins the Bears

There is no possible chance the Bears go after Owens. Even if they did, there is little chance Owens would be interested in playing in Chicago with Kyle Orton.

He’ll end up signing with Minnesota. Either that or the New York Jets.

If I'm Terrell Owens...

Then I book a flight to Indianapolis and beg Bill Polian, Jim Caldwell and Tom Moore let me become wide receiver playmate with Peyton Manning. Owens is 36 years old and WIDELY viewed as a cancer that teams want zero to do with. What better way to once again resurrect his career by going to the Colts and promising to act like a choir boy for the privilege of having Manning throw him the football.

The only team that could potentially handle his ego and ensuing drama

Is Indianapolis. However, he’s burned so many bridges at this point in his career, I don’t think any contending team really wants to waste their time with him, unless it’s a one year deal.

Hopefully Dan Snyder gets drunk and pays TO 100 million dollars, it would be too much fun.

But, I’ll give credit to him for being an elite athlete. There aren’t many football players who can do what he does at his age.

Apparently TO has problems with route running

“Former Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe told more than one person that dealing with Owens’ antics wasn’t the problem. Not knowing where Owens was going to be on a pass route was the problem.”

DON BE A HATAH - HE AIN'T SO MEAN

Read the published reports of his TEAMMATES reactions and their insight in to his beahvior in the locker room, his conduct in 2009 is not what it was in 2006.

YEP, he’s a crybaby, but bottom line is he wants to win, and he wants a ring. Only thing missing on his resume

T.O.

SF 49ers 7 seasons – Averaged over 1000 yards per season, played nearly every game
PHL Eagles 2 Seasons Averaged just under 1000 yards per season – Got in a much publicized tiff with McNabb and the Coaching staff – made an ass of myself
DAL Cowboys 3 Seasons – Averaged over 1000 yards per season – Only whined a little when I didn’t get “my balls”

I work my butt off to stay in shape, I’m physical on the field, and I catch balls thrown at me.

To me, that looks like a pretty decent resume…..

He won’t be a Bear, only becuz he will only play where there is a QB who can get him the ball, Kyle’s a nice kid but he isn’t Steve Young, Donovan McNabb or Tony Romo all Hall of fame QB’s. I look for him to go to Oakland or New Orleans.
