Reports: Torry Holt asks for Release

With all the mass T.O. drama going on, one of the bigger NFL stories is getting overlooked... ESPN reports Torry Holt has asked to be released from the Rams.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3954188

In my opinion, Torry Holt is this years BEST wide receiver free agent. Better than T.O., Houshmanzadeh, Coles, or Harrison... He could make a huge impact on a team like the Bears. Not just on the field but in the locker room as well. With Lovie's ties to the Rams, it may help the situation. But regardless, he should be seriously considered by the Bears if the Rams grant him his request.

Doubtful

Only because if I am to take JA at face value he would say “His price is going to be exorbitant and he is 32. You’re going to pay a high price for a good player who is 32. Do we want to be paying him $10 million in three years?”

heh

Few would call Holt a ’’premium’’ receiver anymore. What Angelo’s comments could indicate, however, is a greater chance that he will look at a receiver with the 18th pick. The last wide receiver he drafted in the first round was Reidel Anthony with the Buccaneers in 1997. Maybe the sting has worn off a dozen years later.

so odds Angelo screws up this pick? 1:3?

hmmm...

3:1?? sounds like an easy moneymaker to me! haha

The Rams

have until Mar.17 to trade him otherwise they owe him a 1.25 million roster bonus. They will probably cut him the 16th.

Fellas....

Are we forgetting who our GM is?

do you really think holt is gonna get paid?

his numbers are down (admittedly, largely due to the rams phasing him out), and he’s getting up there in age. i see him getting a modest contract. which is why we absolutely should go after him if he’s relesed.

his numbers are down

because he had garbage throwing to him, although I cant say the light is any brighter here, but he has said that he admires Hester and would like to teach him some things….I LOVE THE IDEA…but its JA and Holt is a name player, we cant be having none of the Main Entrees, Jerry only orders off the Appetizers.

getting up there in age?

Brian Dawkins is getting up there in age. Marvin Harrison is getting up there in age. Ray Lewis is getting up there in age.

Torry Holt isn’t a youngin’ anymore, by any means… but I’d say he still has 3 solid years of still performing well in him. I mean, everyone is talking about T.O. and where he is gonna land. Why? That guy is 35 and drops as many passes as he catches while Holt, who I think has always has been better than T.O., is younger and would be a much better addition to ANY team. I’d say even if the price tag was high, Holt would be worth a 3 year deal.

But some of these guys are right, Angelo hates the passing game and we will have to sit through another year the Bear’s only passing offense is a 40 pass interference penalty from a CB that ran into Hester who was adjusting to an under thrown Orton pass.

He would be a starter

with the lineup we have. He might go for an incentive laced contract.

by luckie815 on Mar 5, 2009 2:43 PM CST reply actions

JA said he's

not going to spend the money so I won’t get my hopes up that we sign Holt or anyone else for that matter. Still don’t have an Oline so does it really matter?

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

Sign him up

He would immediately be our number 1 wr even at 32. He could teach some of the other guys how to actually run a route and maybe even help out KO. Unless he is looking for some exhorbitant amount of money (which I am guessing he will). He will probably go 49er/Viking/Philly route..

My thoughts exactly

Sign Holt. Draft WR in 2nd round, and let Holt mentorHester, Lloyd, and the draft pick.

Lloyd is gone...

switch that to Bennet. I would take Holt in a second, despite the fact that he killed my fantasy team at the beginning of the year

Ha

I meant Bennett.

I think

I would rather trade a late round pick for him and have him on his current one year deal than try to compete for him on the open market.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Mar 5, 2009 4:39 PM CST reply actions

Never mind that

he’s due 8 mil this year. He won’t get much more than 8 mil guaranteed on the open market.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Mar 5, 2009 4:40 PM CST up reply actions

Well

we have $30 mm that we are not going to spend except for maybe $5mm on draft picks so why not?? I know we over pay for a year but big deal? It would probably cost us no more than a 5th rd pk..

by tfrabotta on Mar 6, 2009 10:36 AM CST up reply actions

Torry Holt won't happen

Too expensive, too old. And Jerry Angelo is in rebuilding mode despite what any Bear fan wants to think to the contrary. The 2009 draft begins the full blown process of starting to rebuild what has become a bad defense and an offense that has holes aplenty.

by BLou on Mar 5, 2009 4:55 PM CST reply actions

too old?

Refer to my rant above…

32 is to old? You do know Housmandzadeh is 31. T.O. is 35. Lavernues Coles is 31. Chad Johnson is 31.

32 isn’t young, but I’d be willing to bet he has a 3 or 4 more solid years in the NFL.

by sirus19x on Mar 5, 2009 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

NFL

no need for the full blown process anymore, more like retooling. Look at Miami last year.. We are a couple of pieces away from 10-6, 11-5. Unfortunatey those pieces are RT, FS, WR and oh yeah..a NUMBER ONE QB..

by tfrabotta on Mar 6, 2009 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

And GM,

OC, DC, and maybe HC.

Ryan Perilloux in 2010!!

well..

I was speaking of player personnel..but obviously you are correct sir…

I wouldn't mind

picking up Miles Austin. He’s big, he’s pretty fast, and can catch. If he can stay healthy, he might be worth it.

by Subotai on Mar 5, 2009 6:15 PM CST reply actions

I'd rather have Torry Holt than Marvin Harrison.

GET HOLT

He’s the veteran leader we need at the receiver position. He’s a possession receiver(which we lack) who can still get up the field. Perfect WR that Orton could depend on.
