The Bears Den - 4/14/09
In the Den
The Bears are continuing their draft prep and have checked out two more offensive guards.
One fan asks: do we need a veteran back at QB or should we be ok with the unexperienced ones we have?
Dan Pompei breaks down the guard class....and the tackles.
If you wanted to you could bet on the chance that Plaxico ends up on the Bears, odds have been set.
I guess the question of who came out ahead in the Chicago/Denver trade will continue to be debated for a long time.
In the Vicinity of the Den
John Clayton looks at the liklihood of a some high priced recievers being moved.
I answer the question who got the better deal with a graphical answer:

hurdling Saurbraum was the best especially after all the smack talk that week about how they weren’t afraid of Hester and Todd trusted his guys to make tackles. Then he took 2 of them to the house and TS missed the last tackle!!!! Yeah!!! WOO!

WTF is going on...
so the draft is coming up and it is hard to be less excited even though the Bears no longer have a 1st round pick, but seriously i’m not expecting much from the draft if we dont move up. So what is our $ status having signed Pace and Cutler as far as the cap is concerned? Is Cutler getting a new contract?
The main reason I ask is because if we have $ and we need a WR we are not likely to get the guy we NEED at #49. we may get somebody at 49 but Massaquoi? no thx! So the free agents that could definitely play for the Bears are Holt, Burress, Marvin Harrison. If I had my way I’d cut all the Wrs but Hester and sign all 3 FAs in a second. can you imagine 2 HoFers Burress and Hester + Forte for Jay to throw to….
But anyway out of those 3 FAs Burress is by far the superior receiver. Except for possible/ likely(?) suspension, his off the court issues do not concern me. Ironically Plax is the only victim of his crime and i doubt he will serve any time, but anyway…. Plax may be a bit of a prima donna but that is life in the NFL and he is not as bad as others. BTW the dude can PLAY! So if the Bears are still way under the cap after signing Cutler and Pace (which i think they are especially considering they no longer have to pay a 1st rounder) and they have the $ to simply pay one of the best WRs in the game it would be silly not to. It is hard for me to have optimistic projections even in the wake of Cutler and Pace, but adding Plax would make this team close to unstoppable. Even if he gets a 4 game suspension that’d mean we’d get him fresh for the end of the season.
Like i mention above Holt and Harrison start today with Hester on the other side. So realizing that we aren’t going to fix WR thru the draft and acknowledging that we are under the cap (??) means sign some FA WRs!
Maybe that is the plan and they are just waiting to execute closer to or after the draft as to not limit their already precarious draft flexibility, but no logic for waiting to address WR is likely to persuade me when there are at least 3 good WRs available.
almost with you
don’t want to cut Bennett without giving him a shot, but you can clear the rest of the roster for all I care.

I’d really like to see Rideau get his shot.

He’s looked good every chance he has received, and we’ve seen how well our “bad” receivers have done elsewhere. Can you really tell me you’d rather see Davis on the field than Rideau?

Rideau has been on the practice squad a number of times
which means all other teams had a shot at him and didn’t go for it.
Translation: He only looks so good, because our receivers suck so bad.

I'm convinced
National media outlets have all portrayed the Bears as “losing” this trade, but they fail to realize over half of draft picks end up being busts or darn close to it. If it was any other team trading for Cutler, they would probably hailed as the greatest organization on the planet. The media in general are not Bear lovers, that’s for sure.
Also, I’m tired of hearing about how great Marshall and Royal are the main reasons for Cutler’s success, but nothing is said of how Cutler made them better receivers. In my mind, Marshall is extremely overrated.

yep, yep
look at what good Quarterbacks can do to mediocre WRs.
Manning=Wayne and Gonzalez
Brees=Colston, Gates, Henderson, Moore, Boston
Brady= Branch, Welker, Moss(he resurrected his career)
Romo=Crayton, Hurd,
Marino=Clayton and Duper

There's nothing overrated about catching 18 passes in one game
The guy’s 6’4 230… he caught 109 passes in 13 games last year (was suspended for the first 3 games)

Not a superstar WR
Just because he has inflated numbers doesn’t mean he’s not overrated (most targeted WR in the league last year, with the 3rd most dropped). 12.2 average per catch in a passing offense is very mediocre; plus he had four fumbles and only six TDs last year. I’m not saying he’s not a good WR, but I watched every Bronco game the past few years and he has a lot of mental lapses in which he doesn’t give 100% on every play. He doesn’t play as big as he is; he’s not very good at breaking tackles, nor going up with consistency for jump balls.

man do I miss his return game hopefully he can get 1 or 2 PR tds this season….,.
Is it August yet???
Here's a great article...
on why Colt’s GM Bill Polian beleives in drafting talent over need… and cites Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark as examples.

Polian has for years
been regarded as one of the top talent evaluators in the NFL.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious. (Vince Lombardi)
Two things
1) I don’t argue Polian’s opinion, since we know he is good at what he does, but I am sure some another GM can put together enough examples to show why drafting need is better.
2) What are the results? They have a Super Bowl when they maybe should have more. Maybe instead of taking Wayne or Clark if they had taken the best defensive player they may won a few more or even been to more than one. Look over the past 20 years, plenty of teams have gone to the SB once and won it and then never got back. So is Polian’s way that much better than anybody else? Probably yes, but you get my point I hope.
If the GM of NE or Pittsburgh wrote the article I’d put more in since they have the results to back it up.
Being Who You Thought We Were Since 2005!
Polian is best in the business
He places a lot of emphasis on hiring the right scouts and in devoting a lot of investment dollars to scouting. And it pays off. Buffalo and Indy.
Reaching
is the key word. If the Arizona Cardinals had half a brain, we wouldn’t have to face Adrian Peterson twice a year.
In 2007, Peterson fell into their lap at #5. The Cards had Edgerrin James and “needed” an offensive tackle.
Peterson was clearly the best player on the board. Most had him going around the 3rd pick. Instead of following Polian’s advice, the Cards “reached” and drafted Levi Brown.
Brown was considered to go from 10-15. The Cards took him at 5.
End result. James was benched the next year and Brown is such an underachiever that he was moved to RT instead of LT.
Imagine the Cards with Warner, Bolidin, Fitzgerald and Adrian Peterson. That’s a scary offense and it was there for the taking for Arizona.
If the Cards took an OT who was rated as being worth the 5th pick (or 6th or 7th) it would have been one thing. To pass on the best player at 5 to take a player rated from 10-15 is kind of stupid.
And that's precisely why my philosophy is to draft the best guy, regardless of position or need
"You win because of the quarterback. We have to get that position stabilized. We're fixated on that." -- Jerry Angelo (12.30.2008)

Wide receiver
My guess is that the Bears will acquire Amani Toomer or Marvin Harrison prior to the draft, then look to take the best available wide receiver or safety with the #49 pick. It does not appear like the Bears or anybody else for that matter is much enamored with Torry Holt. I can assume his contract demands are part of the problem combined with concern over the erosion of skills at age 33.
Toomer and Harrison probably have a little something left in the tank and should come cheap.
Trading up
I agree with everyone on addressing WR later in the draft and with free agency. 2010 is an uncapped year, so it would easy to take a flyer on Holt or Burress without losing much long-term flexibility.
Besides, the receiver we would be getting at 49 is likely not going to be a game breaker or significantly better than what we could get at 99.
The player I really like is Sean Smith from Utah. He posted 4.4 times at his recent Pro Day and would give the Bears a lot of flexibility in the secondary. If he worked out at CB, we could move Tillman to FS, or vice versa. This would be a huge upgrade from last year.
I don’t think he will still be available at 49, but if the board is at 30, and he’s still there, JA should seriously consider trading our late round draft picks and maybe Daniel Manning (if there are any takers for a 5th rounder for him) to move up and take him.
PFT has an artical on a sleeper SS
Michael Mitchell out of Ohio U. 6’1" 221# and ran a 4.4 40 He is supposed to be good against the run and in pass coverage. He is not even listed in the places I have looked. Might be a good 4th or 5th rnd. pick.
