Edwards up for grabs

Yahoo Sports is reporting that Braylon Edwards is expected to be traded to the Giants by draft day. Reportedly the Browns are asking for NY's 2nd and 5th round picks and also Steve Smith (no, not the good one). NY has declined and made a counter offer.

I know Edwards had a down year, but I'm thinking we need to take a shot at this. I'm not thrilled with giving away our whole draft, but we need a WR, and he's better than anyone we've got by a mile. Probably better than anyone we're going to get in the draft too. Since we've got higher picks than the giants, we can offer our 2nd and 5th, or maybe even 2nd and 4th. If they balk, we can also offer to not send them Rashied Davis. That should sweeten the deal.

if we can

entice them with a second, sixth and hopefully Rasheid Davis, I’m all for it.

Either way

Even if we don’t get in on this trade, it will send a receiver to a team who would have probably drafted one a head of us. I think Edwards only has one more year on his contract (he seems on his way out of Cleveland anyway) so Cleveland was in the market. And after Plax getting cut and not resigning Toomer, the Giants are in the market as well. If this trade happens, the Giants could address other needs. Maybe Cleveland grabs Crabtree if he falls. Who knows? But I would love to get Edwards in Chicago, but if he ends up in NY, it could help our draft.

I like your line of thinking...

I have seen a lot of mock drafts where the Giants wind up with Nicks, Robiskie, or on some, even Kenny Britt with the 45th pick. Since none of the teams between 45 and our 49 figure to take a WR, whichever one of the top 7 WR’s falls, could fall all the way to us.

Trade for Amare. Keep Deng and Rose. Figure out the rest later.

And if both Edwards & Boldin get dealt...

that’ll = two more WRs who may drop lower in the draft.

who cares about the picks

with our 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th picks, should be come away with Cutler and Edwards, we would be so happy.

Offer them the second and the 5th (we still have that one, right?).

Hell offer the 2nd and the 4th for all i care. I’d say go 2nd and 3rd but i am under the impression the compensatory picks cannot be traded.

by tempchad on Apr 14, 2009 8:42 PM CDT reply actions

You are right about the comp pick.

Also, we have two 5th round picks.

Don't care about the picks

But Steve Smith is a decent receiver, would a 2,4, and a receiver (I guess Davis) we offer top that?

Heck why not the 2

the 5 and make a deal that we basically draft the 3rd round comp pick for them and ship the player to them afterward, is that at all possible.

Because

I don’t think that JA will give up his entire draft. We’re talking about a man that usually hordes picks and frequently has traded down so he can get extra. He has already taken huge steps, for JA, in trading two 1st to get Cutler. I don’t think that he will trade the 2nd. You know he still wants to do some defensive building. He’ll do that with the picks because he is more comfortable drafting defense. IMO

I think that we sign a veteran FA, hopefully Holt, someone who he won’t have to give up picks to get.

by Fridge72 on Apr 14, 2009 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

JA hordes picks...

that is true. but this year, he wisely realized that the pay scale for first round draft picks is fucked. They make to much money and don’t always pan out.

But yeah, you’re exactly right, he does love the 2-7th round picks, and he’s quite good with those, particularly on defense.

I'm and totally cool with this...

2, 4th or 5th, and maybe Hunter Hillenmayer or someone like that.

by chase17 on Apr 14, 2009 9:21 PM CDT reply actions

Probably not.....

They are looking for a potential starter to help the transition of loosing Edwards. Similar to why we were able to get Cutler, Denver likes Orton more than J Cambell.

Dez Clark...

might be interesting they did lose Kellen Winslow this offseason.

by chase17 on Apr 14, 2009 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Or maybe

Ron Turner and Jason McKie for Edwards. Turner and McKie could never be apart anyhow.

wrecked!!!

Because as far as we're concerned, there is still no team in the history of the NFL that could beat the '85 Bears.

by Ditkavsworld on Apr 15, 2009 8:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I would make the trade with a 2 and 5.

Especially if they wait till the draft and Ribiskie is off the board. If we’re left with just Inglesies, then I say fuck it, trade the pick.

I wonder if we have any players they would want that we could handle losing. I don’t think any of our WR are attractive to other teams, except Hester, and that’s probably only as a Return Specialist.

Pleeeessse do this deal

Are you kiding me if the Browns took a #2 and a #5. I would do that in a heartbeat. That would be the highest scoring offense we have seen in Chicago.

by Sweetness69 on Apr 15, 2009 8:54 AM CDT reply actions

The Browns are gonna stick to their guns...

and try to create a bidding war. They want a 1st and a 3rd. And, they should probably wait till draft day to make a deal, and see who goes where.

I heard on the radio

that the Browns have stated that they have a 1st rounder on the table for Edwards already, and that they have a 1st on the table for Quinn. Of course, this was coming from an anonymous person who was not authorized to speak on behalf of the team…

They're probably taking too many steps backwards anyway

by trading away these guys. I mean, seriously… they have a top QB prospect, and a pretty good WR who was a major impact player two years ago. So, they’re gonna get rid of both of them, and start over again with rookie draft picks?

The draft picks are 50/50… and even if they pan out, they probably won’t make an impact until year 3. 3 years is now becoming too long of a timetable in the NFL for new head coaches. They have to prove it faster than that.

And I remember when they gave Crennell an extension

I was thinking… “Hmmm, this should be interesting”. But the Browns did everything wrong last year, and they seem to be picking back up right where they left off last year.

So, screw it, if they aren’t even gonna try anymore, we’ll take Edwards off their hands. :)

Braylon Edwards is going to cost at least a 1st round pick

Looks like the Giants are willing and able to meet Cleveland’s pricetag. Smart move on their part because Eli Manning will love Edwards.

We could give

a 2nd, 5th, Bennett and D. Clark for Edwards.

Homecoming

by illwill on Apr 16, 2009 12:56 AM CDT reply actions

Cleveland would NEVER do that deal

Earl Bennett has minimal value until the point he starts accomplishing something at the NFL level. Desmond Clark is a high mileage 30-something tight end. Cleveland can do a LOT better than your trade proposal.

by BLou on Apr 16, 2009 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Edwards is a lot more realistic then all the Boldin talks i have been seeing

I would love to see him in Chicago. 2nd, 5th and D. Clark sounds interesting since they lost Winslow but i would honestly think Olsen could be included instead of D. Clark and forget about the 5th. I love Olsen, don’t get me wrong, but he still has a ways to go to be an all around tight end. Dez Clark is in there for the run plays because he can block better and is more durable. Iike i said i love Olsen, but Edwards wasn’t the only Brown to have a down year, Derek Anderson was very bad this year too and i think it just carried over, heck the whole team just folded for some reason this past season. 2nd and Olsen for Edwards. Thoughts?
