WCG Mock Draft - The Minnesota Vikings Select...

CURRENT SELECTION

Darrius Heyward-Bey
Maryland
Wide Receiver

ANALYSIS: I don’t like the Vikings. At all. But since I was chosen for this pick, here I am. If I was truly in charge of the Vikings’ draft, there are numerous ways to sabotage that franchise. For example, if Josh Freeman was still on the board, that’s my automatic #1 pick. If I wanted to select someone who would have the same intellectual capacity as half of their team, Percy Harvin’s my guy. But alas, I have to do this with some form of logic, so Darrius Heyward-Bey is my selection.

Why DHB? Well, the three logical positions the Vikings need are QB (No, Sage and T-Jack are not legitimate answers), WR to start opposite Berrian, and OT. I thought long and hard about Eben Britton, but DHB makes sense.

Yes, I realize that DHB has the glamorous opportunity to be the next Troy Williamson. However, can you imagine a Vikings offense with ____ (insert QB here), Berrian, DHB, and AP? Dangerous, to say the least. They have the #25 ranked passing offense, and having DHB and Berrian would force defenses to stop stacking the line against AP.

I like the pick

I hate the Vikings.

The only good thing I can say about the Vikings is that they suck slightly less than the Packers.

Having said that, DHB is a logical pick at this level.

That tandem will give a FS nightmares

Probably the fastest starting WR duo in recent memory. I dont know who is going to go over the middle for them, but that sounds like a quick strike offense.Giving TJack more weapons this year to decide if he is the answer going forward is a smart move.

so-so

Is DHB a good WR? Absolutely. Is he he the best choice here? I’m not convinced. I think the mock drafter’s reasoning for taking a WR is solid, and agree that taking Britton at this point is a bit of a reach. But what the Vikes need, IMO, is a bigger, stronger WR who can run the routes over the middle, not (another) speed demon on the outside. Hakeem Nicks from UNC would be more that sort of WR, as would Brian Robeskie from OSU. Both of those picks might be reaches at this point in the 1st round though, I will admit. Tough call.

And I thought about that too

I suppose I didn’t go too in-depth with my analysis and logic, so I’ll add more here.

Brian Robiskie is a huge reach here. Percy Harvin would have added speed to their offense, but after his drug test came back positive, he’d be a reach. Hakeem Nicks and DHB were the two WR’s I was thinking about, but PFT came out with this story a couple days ago. The concerns for Nicks are valid.

My thought was that with a burner like DHB, their offense is added yet another dimension. Teams will not only have to focus on Berrian and AP, but now DHB.

I'M A MAN! I'M 22!

I don't see

them making the mistake of taking a track star WR without production again. Troy Williamson didn’t work out that well, and they need more of a possession WR to line up across from Berrian.

DEJESUS!!!
