I love this picture!  He has a look on his face like you better be great, or I'm up the creek without a paddle or a boat.  In this latest sitdown with JA, Larry Mayer covers topics on Earl Bennett and how many draftees will become starters for the Bears.  He has a great explanation on why the former didn't see the field in his rookie year.  Is this a typical backpedal from JA (the Jerry shuffle), or is he really preaching the truth?  Time will tell soon enough on our 4th round pick from a year ago.

Here's a quote from the excerpt:

Usually the best player on our board should facilitate one of our needs, because you usually have three to four needs going into any given draft.

Hey, at least he recognizes and acknowledges we have weaknesses.  Hopefully he doesn't "miss" by reaching for a need too early.

I think Jerry is telling the truth about Earl Bennett.

At least in my book, when I go back and re-read some of the earlier interviews, and then see how he orchestrated the Cutler deal, a lot of credibility was re-established for Jerry. If he says that Earl is good to go, then I believe him.

Now it’s up to the coaches to determine once we get our starters on the field how they complement one another.

Ron Turner, he’s looking at you, feller.

If it

took Earl Bennett, who he says is very bright, half a season to learn the 3 WR positions, and he couldn’t get on the field despite none of the other WRs producing, why are we looking for a number 1 WR (which Angelo has said we need) with our second round pick?

If he admits that we need a number 1, and he admits that a rookie WR can’t be a number 1, why hasn’t he had a Torry Holt press conference?

DEJESUS!!!

Less money

His value is going down a lot for obvious reasons, so he may explore Holt after the draft.

In the interview on ChicagoBears.com....

He said that we are looking for at least three starters, who will be starters within a three year window.

Not focusing

on the WR position in the second round. I get the impression that if certain receivers are available at 49, then they will be picked, if they aren’t there, then they won’t go receiver just for the sake of picking a receiver. i.e. If Angelo is targeting Robiskie and he is gone earlier than 49. He isn’t going to necessarily settle for Iglesias; he might go Safety or something else. Best available amongst 4 maybe 5 positions.

Hahaha

That’s hilarious. Obviously a little competitive!

If he is that competitive in ball drills what is he going to be like on gameday!!!!

He looks like him(sans neckbeard) AND sounds like him.

I'm not sold on Earl Bennett

You mean to tell me an allegedly smart Earl Bennett with a strong work ethic couldn’t get on the football field in 2009 when the receivers ahead of him were Brandon Friggin Lloyd, Marty Washed Up Booker and Rashied Friggin Davis?!?

Please. Bennett has an enormous amount to prove. And just because Jay Cutler has arrived in town and sings the praises of Bennett isn’t enough to convince me. I want to see Bennett actually get on the football field and do something.

That's definately

the only way to know for sure.

3 positions

Compare a guy like Royal or DJack, total successes in Denver/Philly, and Bennett. There’s really no comparison in terms of production, except the fact that the Bears wanted Bennett to know all three WR positions on the field before actually seeing it. I highly doubt they asked Royal or DJack to know much more than one single position…ie split end, flanker, or the slot. I’m not at all defending Bennett’s inability to see the field on one of the worst WR corps. in the league, but let’s give him a chance this year before ultimately judging him. WR is the most difficult position, besides QB, to learn as a rookie. I certainly agree the Bears can’t rely on him to start though; I foresee a draft pick and a free-agent picked up after the draft to fill the roster of WRs.
