2 picks and 2 starters

I do it, if its Vasher and Orton and 1 and 3 heck yeah. Still can sign Lucas and would that be so bad. They would still have a 2 and their other 3. If we are getting Cutler there is no need for Orton anyways. We are planning on having Hanie back him up anyways. However Id make the offer with the two players and the third rounder. If I got a no Id offer next years first rounder. I would try as much as possible to hold on to this years first so we could get Jay a big receiver.

Agreed

That would be fine! Vasher hardly played last year anyway. That still gives the Bears a 2nd & 3rd pick for a receiver & secondary help. If Cutler goes to the freaking Redskins I will be so angry. I hate the NFC East.

you know what

from all the different scenarios in the “What would it take to trade for Cutler?” Story. The bears appear to be the easiest deal to make. Seems like all the others would need a 3rd team and a wing and a prayer.

maybe, but the Bears also

have the worst GM for this type of deal.

Switch 3rd rounders

I don’t think the Bears can afford to trade away two picks and two players in the same year. I’d offer a 3rd rounder for the ’10 draft instead.

Briggs

My friend and I were talking about this scenario last night. It definitely makes a lot more sense than trading two 1st round picks or four total players (2 picks/2 players). JA could feasibly pick up Derrick Brooks as a stop-gap WILL this season, and then worry about drafting a replacement in ’10.

Again... why does it require so much (2 players and 2 high picks)

for us to complete a deal for Cutler?

Sorry… but its just nowhere near comparable to the recent trades for QBs: Cassel, Favre, Schaub.

If the Bears want to replace Orton, then they should use this Cutler hoopla as an opportunity to trade for a young prospect at QB, because the market price will be driven down with Cutler available. Colt Brennan, Chad Henne, Kevin O’Connell…

That would give you 1 more year of Orton under contract, plus a legit QB prospect behind him.

Nice idea

but O’Connell nor Henne are available. Henne is the Phins future QB, and Cassel was already traded from the Pats; I don’t believe they would be willing to trade their other young QB when Brady isn’t 100%.

If that's the case then

the Bears should definitely start offering trades for P. Manning, Brady, and all the best players in the league. Why would a team invest a high draft pick in a QB and turn around and trade him the very next year? That’s a negative value in common sense.

Sal Palatonio gives the edge (in order) to...

Carolina, Tampa Bay, Detroit, NY Jets.

He says the Panthers are willing to deal Julius Peppers and Jake Delhomme or the kid QB they have (Moore?). They are also prepared to swap draft picks as part of a deal.

He also says the Jets really want Cutler but face the difficulty in getting Denver to like a deal of a 1st round pick in both 2009 and 2010.

He says Denver would doubtful be interested in Detroit’s # 1 overall, but they would be interested in the #20 and #33 pick plus other considerations. Presumably the Broncos would then package the picks they would have to move up in the 1st round in order to nab Sanchez.

Sal Pal makes no mention of the Bears in his consideration of serious pursuers.

I for one am not for giving up that much. I thought we had a shot when the rumor was a pick plus a defensive starter. But 2 #1’s for cutler? I am warming up to Kyle as we speak…

agreed

I was about to say the same thing. Best case scenario 1 of those 2 draft picks would pan out for us but it would still not equate to the value of Cutler in Chicago.

by tripsevens on Apr 2, 2009 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Amen!!

to that. If we sacrifice a couple ones, even if it was for the next 5 years. JA has as much first round success as Matt Millen. JA has proven to be a better late round draft tech anyways. It is well worth the investment.

Hmmm...
ESPN says “the Broncos have informed all interested teams that they want at least two first-round picks for Cutler and getting a quarterback in exchange is not a necessity,”

I wonder if that is from the Broncs directly, or from “a source”…

I just dug up this Lovie gem from the archives...

From Dec 30th… link

“We drafted Chris Williams to be our left tackle,” Smith said. “There is no reason to think that Chris can’t develop into that. The next time we come together as a team, he’ll be ready to go. From what I saw of him going against our starting defensive ends, he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

And… yet… now, they want to replace him already with Mr. Pace. LOL.

Minicamp happened after December 30th...

Which therefore makes me conclude that the coaching staff has soured on Chris Williams being a viable tackle in this league AND/OR his back problems are a recurring issue to the point the Bears are not counting on him being available.

Either way, looks like yet another 1st round B.U.S.T.

espn says

Bears one of four serious suitors for Cutler

April 2, 2009 7:28 AM

Posted by ESPN.com’s Kevin Seifert

After reading the Black and Blue post below, make sure you check out the AFC West blog of our colleague Bill Williamson. (Thanks to Alex of Minneapolis for the suggestion for top-to-bottom readers.)

According to Williamson, the four most serious teams in the Jay Cutler sweepstakes are Washington, Tampa Bay, Tennessee and — yes — the Black and Blue’s own Chicago Bears. The Redskins are getting most of the public attention right now because they could include quarterback Jason Campbell and possibly cornerback Carlos Rogers in the deal, but the Bears do have a better complement of draft picks to offer if it comes to that.

Also, as we discussed Wednesday, the Bears could send Kyle Orton to the Broncos as at least a short-term solution. Campbell has probably performed better than Orton during their short careers, but not by a dramatic margin. (Campbell’s career passer rating is 80.1. Orton’s is 71.1.)

So I think it’s fair to say the Bears are seriously considering this opportunity. Will they ultimately pull off the deal? If they do, they’ll have to overcome the most aggressive owner in the NFL. Washington’s Dan Snyder doesn’t usually get outbid when he wants to make a deal.

Who honestly thinks the Bears will pony up what it will take to acquire Jay Cutler

I don’t. There is no way the mega-conservative Jerry Angelo is going to send two first round picks to Denver. Plus I doubt the #18 pick in 2009 and presumably an even lower 1st round pick in 2010 is going to be enough to entice Denver. They can get better 1st round talent from other teams.

My guess is that Cutler would love nothing more than to return to Nashville to play for Tennessee. But how do they work a deal when they just signed Kerry Collins to a two-year deal and their draft picks are low in the rounds?? Vince Young has zero market value.

That's precisely why I'd like to have Vince Young right now...

buy low… and have a chance at lightning in a bottle.

God no

Vince Young is awful. His Wonderlic score of 6 actually WAS a precursor of what to expect out of him in the NFL. THere are some people who think Vince Young is on the cusp of being out of the NFL completely he is that bad.

by BLou on Apr 2, 2009 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Some players,

take longer to develop than others. We can’t just look at them as athletes, but also as human beings. Some people handle pressure better than others, but that doesn’t mean that the ones who develop (whether mentally, emotionally, or athletically) slower will never develop period.

Vince Young is still growing up, just not at the super star pace that a lot of other QBs do. That doesn’t mean he can’t grow, and certainly doesn’t mean he won’t become a great player.

Vince Young will be out of the NFL in two years. That is an assessment that is shared by a number of respected people in the NFL.
