Is Anybody Untouchable to Get Cutler?

I thought we could take a look at how important you think Jay Cutler would be to this team.  Of course this assumed you think he could be our franchise QB for the next 10 years.

what about Forte?

Would you all be willing to give up our bell cow?

by sheepskinz1 on Apr 2, 2009 9:58 AM CDT reply actions

Yes, in a heartbeat

Forte was good, not great. you can always pick up a runningback that could match or even top his production. if I was to pick a player who is untouchable, that player would be Greg Olsen.

Agreed

Running back is the easiest to replace. A quality young TE is not.

Easy to replace?

You know how many crappy RBs we’ve gone through since Neal Anderson?

I don't disagree with you,

But for the sake of argument, Rashaan Salaam and Thomas Jones both won Offensive ROY while with the Bears.

And neither of those guys (Salaam & Thomas) were long term answers...

The only real answer we came up with was Thomas Jones.

Here’s the list since Neal Anderson:

Lewis Tillman
Raymont “The Ultra Back” Harris
Robert Green
Tim Worley
Rashaan Salaam
Tony Carter
Anthony Johnson
Michael Hicks
Darnell Autry
Edgar Bennett
Curtis Enis
James Allen
Bam Morris
Anthony Thomas
Leon Johnson
Autry Denson
Adrian Peterson
Brock Forsey
Thomas Jones
Cedric Benson
Matt Forte
Garrett Wolfe
Kevin Jones

by Bearsguy34 on Apr 2, 2009 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

The reason I didn't include Forte

is we are not going to become a pass first team at least overnight, so we need to keep an established runner. Cutler is much more mobile and has better pocket presence than Orton. He would actually loosen up the defense based on those and his arm strength and fast release. He would open lanes for Forte our of respect for his talent.

He played great even when the rest of the team had a down year on defense, we just signed him to a long term contract, he’s going to be he centerpoint of the defense in a year or two when Hurtlacher retires or is traded/released.

Definately Briggs.

Lance and Forte, and even Olson are untouchable.
Next tier is Hester and Urlacher, maybe Orton
Last is everyone else

by Bearsguy34 on Apr 2, 2009 12:47 PM CDT reply actions

Why are they untouchable?

What’s your definition of “untouchable”? To me, it means you can’t trade “X” player because he’s the best player in the league at his position and you can’t replace him. I’ll give you Briggs, because he might be the best will linebacker in the NFL. Forte and Olsen, not so much. Hester should definitely be traded because if he was on any other team that actually knows how to utilize him, he’d be insane. Urlacher, I love him, should have been traded after the SB loss to maximize his value. Now, we’re stuck with an aging MLB who can’t shed blockers and seem to tackle anymore and a converted CB, RB, KR, PR, WR who hasn’t shown his true ability yet at WR.

by McRipper on Apr 2, 2009 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

untouchable

urlacher is a prime candidate for a trade.olsen is untouchable you have to give cutler someone to throw to.forte maybe as a rookies second year is normally non productive.

by stepeo on Apr 2, 2009 1:17 PM CDT reply actions

I just mean...

…Forte is a talent. If we are going to “run the ball coming off the bus” we need a guy who has talent. Do you want Kevin Jones and “The Other” Adrian Peterson being our featured backs? HECK NO.
I think Forte is going ot be a sensation in the NFL, and I’d love to have him in a Bears Uni for a long time to come.
Lance= Self explainatory.
Greg Olsen could be one of the elite TE in the league, if Turner utilized him and if we had a QB who would throw to him. All we had to do last year is hand off to Forte and throw slants to G.O/Dez and we would be dominate. Minus the fumbles at Carolina that cost us, he was awesome. Turner was too busy tring to get Hester involved, and all he did was dance in the backfield and forget his routes. Put him (and leave him) at KR/PR and find some WRs!!! RD can’t catch a cold, Bennett sat on the bench… The problem with our team is we don’t know talent when we see it. We run people out of town before they even get good. Ex Grossman, Barnyard, Moose, etc.
Urlacher is indeed in his last few years, and can be replaced. Trade him now and get some picks, if you can. Trade everyone else too if you want, just keep your CORE talent, trade a Vasher or a Hillenmeyer and make something happen.

by Bearsguy34 on Apr 2, 2009 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree for the most part

Disagree that we ran Grossman out before he got good. We gave him more than enough opportunities and he failed miserably(except Sept. of ‘06). Also Urlacher will return to his form this year. W/ Harris healthy and Harrison/Adams in front to control blockers he’ll be able to roam the field again. I’m predictin a PB for #54.

Forte isn't Payton, but.........................

Payton wasn’t the HOF All Time Greatest Back that we all know and love after his Rookie Year either. If you look at Payton’s stats after his rookie season:

Attempts: 196 Yards: 679 Avg: 3.5 TD: 7
Receptions: 33 Yards: 213 Ave: 6.5 TD: 0

and then compare them to Forte:

Attempts: 316 Yards: 1238 Avg: 3.9 TD: 8
Receptions: 63 Yards: 477 Ave: 7.6 TD: 4

You would have to agree that Forte’s are more impressive.

Look I am not saying that Forte is the next Walter Payton, but I am also not willing to say that he is the next Salaam or Anthony Thomas. The point is that it takes a lot more than a rookie season to know what you have. A dominant running back has to be considered almost as important as a franchise QB for a team structured like the Bears or else you would not see Running Backs taken at the top of the Draft.

Cutler...

Is not as good as you think he is. Look at his record.
He’s a premadonna at best right now. Kyle was voted as a captian by his PEER, and none of Cutler’s teammates have said a WORD about him leaving.
Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t mind having Cutler, but to give up our starting RB right now when we are fixing the OLine is a mistake.
PS. Pro Bowl’s don’t mean SHIT in my opinion. It should have been Rivers, not Cutler last year.

Team sport

and yes Rivers did deserve the pro bowl last year

But Cutler is a career 60% comp guy with a high 80s QB rating for his career.

I’m not saying we SHOULD give up forte, I’d rather not. But if we can land something we haven’t had in 50 years, I’ll get over it.

The shortest distance between two points is under construction.
