Breaking News: Bears Get Cutler AND Pace!

Give it up to Jerry Angelo, ladies and gents....he actually followed through on what he said!

Hopefully for the last time, here are the terms of the deal (from the Sun-Times)

Broncos Get:

- Kyle Orton

- Two 1st round picks (2009 and 2010)

- 3rd round pick (2009)

Bears Get:

- Jay Cutler

- 5rd round pick (2009).

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! We actually got a QB?

UPDATE @ 5:16 PM: ESPN is reporting the Bears just signed Orlando Pace. Links are coming soon.

Denver wins.

Everyone is so hyped up on Jay, but Kyle is a winner and not a whiner. Hyped up and hard-working— they both were, but thick skinned defines Orton from Cutler. The Broncos end up getting a steal in this deal because of the draft picks involved. If Cutler lives up to Jeff George potential, then Denver wins big. If he lives up to Elway hype, then Denver breaks even. The Bears paid too much. Almost 20 years ago the Vikings wanted their FRANCHISE to be Herschel Walker. He was good, but no where near the talent that Emmitt Smith was—-plus Aikman and Irvin and the decade of Cowboys dominance that ensued because of the draft picks that were part of the deal. I am not saying that Josh McDaniels can draft as smart as Jimmy Johnson, but here is his chance. Dominate or Decimate.

by CutlerSuxBalls on Apr 2, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Careful what u wish for

He’ll drive ninety-five yards down the field, and then throw a heartbreaker end-zone pick. That’s why his yardage totals are so high, with low win-loss pct. Plus he’s such a whiner and a bigger lush than orton.

by Denverite on Apr 2, 2009 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bigger?

Bigger lush than Orton. That’s just crazy talk. Haha.

His 28th ranked defense didnt effect his win-loss total at all...

There was an incident a few years ago. The Bulls were killing the Knicks, scrubs were playing out the clock, and the fans were screaming at them to score 100 points for free Big Macs. They took a ton of shots, Knicks took offense and they tried to fight some Bulls players.

I have to

leave my office to do work and I get home turn on ESPN and all of the sudden….. I see Cutler goes to Bears. No F’in way. And then I see we got Pace to, well i’ll be damned Jerry. Now figure out how to get me us a receiver and I’ll leave you alone for the rest of the offseason. Wow….

If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

Trade terms

think we got a great trade value…..no real Qb in this years draft and possibly next years and we land better talent in the later rounds. Cutler has only been in the league for three years and he has already broken most of the Bears QB records. YOUNG GUN! thats what im screamin

why not?

We haven’t had a true starting quarterback in two decades.

In that time, we’ve had plenty of draft picks, and see how they’ve worked out? Sometimes teams need to give up a lot to get what will eventually win them championships. This is a risk we had to take. For people like me who are in their twenties, we can finally see what it’s like to have legitimate quarterback play for the Bears.

On with the (good) youth movement!

i honestly don't think any other team was offering the broncos 2 first round picks and a qb

I think Washington was offering 2 1st rounder and Jason Campbell.

Leave it to Snyder to drive up the cost. Well worth it for the Bears. No need for musical chairs at QB any more, which will free up our draft choices for the next 8-10 years.

He's a good player who plays hard

I think it’s over. McDaniels is suppose to be a good QB coach. I think that Orton can run this hybrid spread thing that is gonna be played out there.

by GallopingGhost on Apr 2, 2009 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Orton

He ran a type of spread offense at Purdue. He’s a decent QB, with some upside. He’s very poised in the pocket, and seemed to make good audible changes at the line. I can see you guys drafting Sanchez now, and have a nice QB competition.

by propheteer on Apr 2, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He has a decent shot.

He was pretty solid from game 4-10 before he got injured. Then he looked pretty bad. He should improve this year after all the game experience he got last year. He can’t throw deep, but he can dink and dunk well. He made some game winning drives too.

He did that without very good receivers, so I definitely think experience and Marshall and Royall should help him a lot.

I think it is a 50/50 chance. He’ll be learning a new system, should be a little better, not injured, and has more weapons.

Kick it to me... I'm open!

Great deal

It’s so hard to find a good QB in the NFL… Cutler is your starter for the next 10 years at least.

62% Completion 4500 yards passing… definitely worth two first rounders.

Chiefs had two first rounders and three third rounders after the Jared Allen trade last year, and went 2-14. Draft picks don’t mean anything when you can have a proven QB instead.

What's that? Running deep and catching game-breaking TD's?

Cutler can throw the deep ball as well as Grossman and he is more accurate on the shorter and intermediate throws. It’s hard to catch the ball when it’s thrown 5 yards in front of you.

One of my favorite NFC teams, in fact. I just HATE the Broncos.

Aren’t all these analysis’ subjective?

I’m just bummed that the “Donk-cos” are now going to have FOUR first round picks to improve their team. Frankly, I think Cutler lacks any mental toughness at all and is extremely careless with the ball. (Check out his picks). So it benefited my team to have him in Denver…that’s all I was saying.

I think Denver got over. And again, I HATE DENVER….

You’d prefer playing against Cutler than Orton? As a Bear fan living in SD, I think you’re dead wrong. I’ve watched Cutler here in the NFC West for a while now, and just don’t think he’s that great. He’s never lead a team to even the playoffs, so I’d say he’s far from a franchise player.

It hurts my team (Chargers) that Denver now has 4 first rounders over the next 2 years to improve with. I’d rather they were still stuck with Cutler.

Still, I wish the Bears the best. I like Chicago. Hopefully all 4 of those picks suck!

To All the Jay Cutler Went 17-20 as a starter people....

He has gone 13 – 1 when defense holds opposition to 21 pts or less, time to lock it down D.

by BearsfanstuckinSea on Apr 2, 2009 5:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Not to rain on the parade....

But that’s kind of a silly stat. Most QB’s are winners if the other team doesn’t score 21. Kyle Orton was 6-1 last year when the other team scored less than 21.

by poryorick on Apr 2, 2009 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The stat you do not see

is in 6 or 7 of those losses where the opponent scored more then 21 Cutler threw a Pick 6. If cutler does not throw that Pick six in those games the D hold the other team to under 21 points and the Broncos win. Cutler was a big reason in those 20 losses. You always hear the Positive stat but you never hear the negative ones

You are mistaken

Grossman got us out of that hole. In 2007, Hester returned two kicks, our defense kept blowing it. Grossman drove us down the field and Berrian caught the tying pass at the end of regulation.

many of us had been arguing that it would be very good for the Bears if Orton had to compete with Chris Simms for the starting QB job.

Cutler to Hester - Pitch & Catch

Cutler uses his rocket arm to throw deep to speedster Hester. One of four possibilities:

1. Completition – Very Good
2. Pass Interference – Very Good (Same as #1)
3. Incompletition- No big deal
4. Interception – Even if this happens, the ball is 50 yards downfield.

The odds are in our favor!

Urlacher Kills Me

He said “Cutler must be pretty good. We gave up a lot for him.”

The Bears played the Broncos in 2007. The Broncos put 34 points on the board. The only reason the Bears won (37-34) was the two return TD’s from Hester.

Did Urlacher watch film before and after the Bronco game? Maybe if he’s still not sure of Cutler’s abilities, that might explain how Denver put up 34 points on the board on the road in Chicago.

Completely worth it

Although Cutler hasn’t reached elite status yet, he’s shown that he can get there. What is that worth? To me, that’s worth ALOT, even more than what we paid. I mean c’mon 50% of 1st rounders are a bust! you add in the sordid history of Bears 1st round draft picks. Hell, I’d give up 3 Bears first round picks for a true talent like Cutler. Even if it sets us back a year or two, it’s worth it to eventually build around Cutler.

I Believe I Can Fly !

I can’t believe we got Cutler and Pace! Kudos to JA. I have been skeptical about him for a while, but he really pulled this off. We can draft the best available WR with the 2nd and use the compensatory 3rd for another OT, WR or DE. This was the perfect draft to do this because the OT and WR this year are really deep, so we can still get a quality player. I think signing Pace might be the best move out of this for this year because of the crap that we had for a line for the beginning part of the season. Finally a franchise QB!

Clark Judge: Cutler is an evil nancy-boy

But I’m just paraphrasing.

Judge’s Column

Anyway, here’s what Pete Prisco wrote, and I agree:

The belief in Chicago is you always run it and play good defense. That can get you only so far. With all the rules changes the past 10 years, you have to throw it to score. With Cutler and fleet running back Matt Forte, the Bears need to play a more wide-open style of offense. It will be interesting to see how that changes.

But coach Lovie Smith is a Tony Dungy disciple. Dungy was viewed as a defensive coach in Tampa Bay. Then he inherited Peyton Manning in Indianapolis and that changed.

Read it here

BTW, who is Orton similar to? I am guessing a younger version of Trent Dilfer but I would like to know from Bears fans what Denver should expect.

I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

I would say

At his best he’s kind of like Chad Pennington—heady, accurate, gutsy, but unable to move the ball down the field.

At his worst, he’s like Shane Matthews—wild and only throwing short.

I think he’s a decent QB, and you can win with him, but he will limit your offense. But he doesn’t make a ton of mistakes, and he can come through when it counts. But if you lean on him, you’ll be disappointed.

I guess

John Elway and Eli Manning were whiners to for not wanting to play in Indy and S.D. But hey what the hell do I know.
