Did the Bears give up too much?
I am going to say NO!
Kyle Orton for Jay Cutler? No response needed for that one, but what the heck... I always liked Neckbeard, but then again I liked Rex before him and whoever was under center before him (Chandler, Miller, etc...). Cutler is a Pro Bowl QB and will give Bears fans a substantial reason to route for the offense.
Third Round pick? Eh... Lance Briggs and Bernard Berrian were 3rd round picks but so were Michael Okwo and Dez White. Not to mention, the Bears still have another 3rd round pick. :-)
Now two first round picks? Am I the only one not taken back by this? The NFL Live crew made this seem like a suicide move by the
Please look at the past 10 years. How many players are proven starters for the Bears as of the last game of the 2008 season?
THREE in TEN years.
3 out of 10 (No pick in '06 but 2 in '03). Urlacher, Tommie Harris, and Greg Olsen. Chris Williams still not yet a proven starter. I will take those chances anyday of the week to get a young Pro Bowl QB.

Agreed
I kind of think the third round pick was overkill but if that was the final evening chip in the deal then it’s fine.

no.
This is a move for the future. You win with great QB’s. The league has changed and the Bears understand that. With a true QB you have a chance to win every season.
The Defense can be rebuilt in 2 years and Cutler will be 27ish. Cutler,Olsen,Hester,Forte are the future. Not Urlacher and Tommie Harris.

Why not Tommie Harris?
He’s only like 25 I believe. Why is he not a part of the future?

It’s broken down a few times but it’s helped me through some hard times. It even aided me in making it to the Super Bowl game in ’06. Tho it did break down on the way there.

I'm still not sure how I feel...
I’ve read everyone’s comments and heard everything, but I feel that we gave up a lot to have Cutler. I’ve never been 100% sold on him in the first place, I didn’t mind Orton, but hopefully he’ll be able to prove he’s worth all that we gave.
I’m not saying that this was a bad trade, just that I’m very curious to see where this goes. I’m hoping along with everyone else that we did the right thing and that he doesn’t gulp get injured or that he doesn’t work well with the team. We’ll see though. I’m hoping! :)

Exactly
I was in the same place. Time to plug our noses and take the plunge because there aint no going back.

this is a steep price
2 #1s, a #3, AND a starting QB (orton isn’t a star, but pre-injury he was pretty decent with some horrible talent around him). that being said, young franchise QBs don’t become available very often. a great QB makes everyone around them better. think about all those years favre killed us (and lots of other teams) with pretty mediocre talent on offense. brady didn’t have much until 2 years ago, yet he killed teams. anyway, point being, if cutler is indeed an elite QB, the price will be worth it. if we sign holt, draft a decent WR in round 2, have our o-line hold up (it seems much improved on paper), and maybe even have earl bennett emerge with the help of his college QB, our offense is actually going to be pretty good, and probably good for a few years.

HONESTLY
They didn’t give up two 1st round picks. They gave up one (next years).
They USED this years 1st round pick on Cutler. There’s a difference here.
Denver used a #11 pick, in 2006, on an unproven Jay Cutler.
Three years later, we used the 18th pick to get a young, PROVEN, Pro-Bowl QB.
We used a #1 just like Denver did. In order to make the deal happen, we gave them Orton (who we now don’t need) and next years #1 (which, by JA’s track record) only had a 50/50 chance of being successful. We also swapped a 3rd for a 5th.
If Cutler is the Bears franchise QB for the next 10 years, it’s the steal of the century.

Agree completely.
We drafted Cutler with this years pick. And gave up KO, this years 5 and next years 1st.
The shortest distance between two points is under construction.

Its like this
We used 3 picks to get a proven NFL qb. We could have used our first round picks to draft “positions of need” but whos to say they pan out. How many of our first rounders have in the past. How many of last years first rounders are major contributors on their teams. I think giving up picks that may or may not pan out is a very small price to pay for the new face of the franchise. We gave up none of our talent to get a Star.

Exactly
You don’t want to go around trading away all your picks year after year, but this was one of those occasions when opportunity presented itself.
Draft picks are generally more miss than hit, but they tend to cost less than free agents — except for the first-round misses. They kill you every which way.

Think about it
2 first round picks— who upgrades the most important position with the 18th pick??
No one.
Next years pick should be late middle to late first round. again no upgrade.
We still have a 3rd round pick left, but the only thing that “bothers” me is if Cutler goes down who backs him up?
Don’t get me wrong I love this move, I want the season to start now. It’s finally nice to see the Bears make a winning now move.

the same guy
will back Cutler up as would have backed Orton up. Thats who.

Their is no real comparsion for this trade
as 25 year old QB’s coming off pro bowl seasons dont get traded. Looking at all the mocks, unless Heyward-Bey fell to us at 18 anyone we were going to be reaching for someone, so losing that pick does not matter to me. If the defense can at least maintain what they did this year (I personally think they will improve a tad this year) we should win the division, so are pick is likely in the mid 20’s at best. Since the talent level in the mid 20’s in most drafts is comparable to what you can get in the mid 30’s (2nd rounders) those picks tend to be overated so again I can live with giving it up. What bothers me is third rounder, as you can get a starting caliber player who will likely get paid in six figure money in his first contract. I personally felt like we could have given up a fourth or fifth and not gotten that pick from Denver back. We have 8 picks still in the draft, so if Britt or Nicks falls out of the first round, we can still monever somewhere in the top of round two (for the 49th and 140/143 (whatever 5th rounder we get from Denver) and get one of those guys.

Well......
No price is to steep to pay for a franchise QB. His abilities instantly make Olson, Forte, and Hester probowlers. Wow

It was pricey
But I am glad they pulled the trigger. (Actually stunned is more like it, but I am guessing most of us are in that boat.) I would have expected both Pace and Cutler signings to have been posted here on April 1st. ;-)

I'm just gonna paste this from my other post
If Cutler (a pro-bowl QB), could be drafted this year, he’d likely be the #1 overall pick in the draft. Based on Jimmy Johnson’s point value system, the #1 overall pick is worth 3000 points.
The #18 pick is worth 900. The 3rd round pick is worth 175 (I think). And next year, if the Bears finish the same or better, their #1 will be worth 900 or less. Throw in Orton (who could be valued as a 2nd round pick in a trade), and you’re probably still not adding up to 3000 points.

Jerry Angelo trades for Jay Cutler! (4.2.2009)

Great comparison
I got skittish last week about paying multiple picks for Cutler. But this is good perspective.

Let's just hope
that Cutler will be worth everything we traded (other than through points) and that we won’t wish we had Orton back…
This is one of those things where you won’t know if it’s a good deal until we see him play at least a few games. Chances are we’ll be fine. I’m sure hoping though! :)
