New Idea for 2nd Round Pick
Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech
For some reason I can't paste the paragraph in here. But it details the risers and fallers of the draft and on the fallers list there is Michael Johnson, because his inconsistent motor and weak production. Regarded as a potential top 5 pick after his junior season he came back for his senior year and his stock plumeted. He is 6-7 266, but the thing that intrigues me is his crazy athleticism. In the past I would have been scared of drafting a guy like this, however the hiring of Marinelli, a guy spoken of as one of the greatest D-Line coaches in the NFL and a great motivator. I really think he can turn Johnson into a Simeon Rice type player and that would be awesome.
You guys had so much fun bashing LSU, I thought I would join in.

Dude, my bacon isn't flying
there is no way this guy lasts until 49. Lots of teams want him, if his so called “draft stock is falling” it’s probably a smoke screen. Feel this out, you know it’s true.
If you want to crown em...
If by some reason he lasted till #49
He would most definitely be in discussion in the Bears War Room
Right now, I’d like to see Rashad Johnson last till #49 for the Bears taking. The boys at WalterFootball have Rashad ranked as the top safety in the class, and the #21 ranked prospect overall. They have Michael Johnson at #43.

I like

i really like draftcountdown

I disagree
ProFootballTalk isn’t great.
Nor are the ESPN experts.

Some different
rankings there than everywhere else:
Andre Smith at 63!, Percy Harvin at 100.
Rashad Johnson at 21 is the highest I’ve seen him anywhere, and Darius Butler at 13 is odd.
DEJESUS!!!
Johnson is inconsistent as hell
And, IMO, would be a waste of a pick in a year that we just can’t miss.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
How?
I know he’s inconsistent, but really he’s a top 5 talent level pick tats around at 49. I feel that with good coaching he will become a terror off the edge. Plus, I’ve heard lots of people say he didn’t fit the system that Paul Johnson runs, and that’s why he was so inconsistent.
That's fine
Paul Johnson didn’t run himself out of plays constantly. Paul Johnson didn’t turn his motor on and off when he felt like it.
I’m just saying there’s a huge boom/bust potential and I’d rather pass. I’m not dogging your opinion, I’m just stating mine.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
I agree he has huge boom or bust potential...
but I think the boom is so huge that it is worth the chance.
If he is available at 49
you would have to believe that the Bears would take him considering he is a tremendous talent, and despite the fact that DE is not our biggest need, IMO JA and the bears need to take the approach of picking the best available player (even if it isn’t our biggest need).

Before Cutler
I would have grabbed this guy at #49 in a heartbeat, but now I would be more hesitant. I gathered from several sites he would be rated somewhere around the 49th so it’s not a reach. But he’s not going to see a whole lot of playing time next year. He could be a situational rusher and be effective. I’ll say this, if no receivers or safeties worth the pick are left, I’d be happy with MJ. He could be special in a few years.

We already have a situational rusher
Mark Anderson

A little early to say he sucks...
The whole entire d-line had a terrible year (except for maybe Alex Brown), so don’t be so quick to write Anderson off. Give him (and the whole line really) another year with a (hopefully) improved defense and I think you will see about 8-10 sacks from him considering he’s proven he can do it throughout college and during his first year here.

Respectfully disagree
In my view our defensive line is a mess. Dusty Dvoracek is injury plagued and insanely overrated on those infrequent ocassions when he has actually been healthy. Tommie Harris took the monster payday and retired in place for reasons that I cannot possibly fathom. Anthony Adams is strictly a journeyman type. Israel Idonje is a toolsy complementary player, which is good to have. Adewale Ogunleye had one exceptional season in Miami that he hasn’t remotely lived up to since he arrived in Chicago, to the point where I would love to see him out of town. Mark Anderson was a one-year wonder who once he became a known quantity opposing offenses adjusted to and completely neutralized.
Alex Brown is the only member of the defensive line who I truly feel good about. And Brown is by no means what would be termed an elite player.
We need to replenish our D-lIne... no doubt.
But… take this into consideration for next year’s performance:
We have 3 guys in their contract years (when players suddenly, and coincidentally “turn in their best performances”): Anderson, Ogunleye, and Idonije.
Combine that with the Marinelli factor, and we should enjoy a good season from that group.

Yup
and he had 1 sack last year. And his contract is up after 09, along with o-gun. Defensive end is a need in this draft.

I've said it before, and I'll say again.
The defensive line class is extremely weak this year in my opinion. Combine that with getting someone that can supposedly whip what we have into shape, and we should probably wait until next year.
See what we have, and pick a better year to fire.

Bears will take best available Wide Receiver, Safety or Defensive End at #49
That’s my opinion. Under no circumstance do I see Jerry Angelo reaching on a player with the #49 pick. He is going to take the best available from among those three positions. Which leads me to believe the Bears will come away with a Safety in the 2nd round and roll the dice on finding a developmental wide receiver at #99.
Don't forget CB
He may take one if the value isn’t there for those other positions.

Exactly right
Its going to be DE, WR, FS, or CB in Round2. If they don’t find Nicks, Britt, or Robiskie still available, I think DE is very likely. MJohnson would be a great addittion, LSidberry might be a consideration as well. Remember Bazuin was a former 2nd round pick at DE and hasn’t been replaced yet.
I feel good about the Bears coming away with a good football player who will immediately contribute at #49
I am also convinced that gone are the days of Jerry Angelo “reaching” on players in the early rounds ala was the case with Dan Bazuin (awful), Garrett Wolfe (he wasn’t worthy of a 3rd round pick), etc.
Use the #49 pick to get the best available player on your board at WR, DE, S, CB. That’s a wide enough range of pressing position needs where Angelo doesn’t have to feel confined. Last thing we need is another bad reach on a Wide Receiver ala Mark Bradley.
Bradley wan't a reach...
he was a beast when he actually played, he was just injury-prone.

I recall the talk on Bradley
it was considered a good pick, but he was extremely raw. We haven’t proven we can develop a receiver yet. Maybe that is why we should not take a receiver and get a good one in FA.
Being Who You Thought We Were Since 2005!
He was a converted DB, just learning how to play WR.
These are the kind of picks that kill the Bears. You want a WR, then draft a WR. You want a DB, then draft a DB. But don’t use a high draft pick on a guy changing positions… unless you’re high when you make the pick .

that is true
but he was converted in college, and not the pros. converting players in college happens all the time, as they usually play against lesser talent and gain confidence in their new position. the big difference is, you try to convert them in the pros and throw them to the wolves, It’s gonna hurt them more than anything else.

No...
I’m pretty sure we have a decent track record with WRs, when we drafted Berrian he was basically all speed and couldn’t catch the ball to save his life, and on the bears he turned into a premier #2 WR.
Track record
doesn’t consist of one WR developed.
