Late Round Receiver Help

Hey, I'm in Texas and in the paper one day I saw this guy on the WR sleepers list. His name is Johnny Knox and he played at Abiline Christian University, a D2 school in Texas I believed they won their divisions NC.

Height: 6-0 Weight:185

40 time: High 4.4 Low: 4.22

He is super fast, has good hands, and is actually taller than Eddie Royal and is a similar WR. He is projected to be in like the 4th or 5th round, I believe.

Since most of you have probably never heard of him, I will show you some vids.

I was actually thinking about Johnny Knox too

I’m glad you posted this. Bears scouts usually check out Abiline Christian too, see Daniel Manning.

Thanks for the vids

Sure I wouldn’t have heard of johnny Knox or Bernard Scott had you not posted the vids.

That kid sure looked fast. He’s a bit small for a possession receiver which is what everyone seems to think that we need. I wouldn’t complain about a possession receiver, but I don’t think that we are as desperate for it as some. With our two above average TE’s and Forte I think that we will be able to get by with Cutler. Until he proves me wrong, I’m going to keep my head in a box on the issue and assume that Cutler is going to be far more accurate than Orton or Grossman was.

I’ll bet you could stretch a defense pretty good with Knox and Hester both racing down the sidelines.

Do you know where Bernard Scott is projected to go?

nice post.

I would like the Bears to pick up two receivers and this guy seems pretty sharp. You can’t really complain about his height when we have all 5’9’’ of Rashied Davis on our squad and 6’0 is a good size. If he’s available later in the draft he seems like a good pick up.

My assessment of the Bears WR situation

extremely simplified: is that Hester is our outside deep threat with no backup. So a late round speedy backup like Knox would be a wise choice.
Bennett would be our outside possession WR with Rideau as his backup.
Davis will move back to the slot this year and this is the position the Bears should target early in the draft to take over as the starter.
There is some flexibility in that Hester is built like and maybe should be the starting slot WR, backed up by Davis. But in this case, we would need to draft a deep threat WR early, who would then be backed up by a late round rookie. Not such a bad idea, because the Bears frequently play with 2 TEs and 2 WRs. The Bears would probably like to only carry 5 WRs on the roster, and maybe have one on the practice squad.
This is where a guy like Ramses Barden makes a lot of sense with the #99pick. His 21.6 YPC average and 36 TDs the last 2 seasons would be an excellent complement to the Bears roster. He lacks ideal speed for a deep threat WR, but his 6’6" height and strength would give him a great advantage over CBs.

Barden will be

long gone by 99. I read something a few weeks back about Al Davis being high on him and using a 2nd rounder on him. I dont remember the site but it seems to me like Barden wouldnt make it to us at the end of the 3rd.

I don't know about that

because if you’re going off what teams are saying about a player then there’s a good chance that’s going to be wrong. A (smart) team wouldn’t publicly show that they like a certain guy, and especially not later round guys. And anyway I don’t think Barden has the kind of speed that Al Davis usually likes in his skill players (mcfadden, javon walker, ashley lelie, etc.). I personally think Todd McShay is an idiot, but with that being said he still has Barden lasting into the 5th or 6th rounds so he might be available with one of our 5th rounders. So basically what I’m saying is don’t discount any player because with presumed later round picks you never know what’s going to happen.

Well I think we need more then

1 receiver anyways. If we can get a Robiski or Nicks to drop to us in round two why not add another young guy in round 5. Our depth at receiver is very suspect as it is. Hester, Davis, Bennett, and then a bunch of nothing. So adding two via draft and another in free agency wouldnt be too much of a stretch. Davis would be the likely odd man out. But I think adding two on draft day wouldnt be a bad idea.

Knox looks great in the vids

You cant teach a kid how to run, and hes got that down. And either you can catch or you cant. And it seems like he knows how to do that. Not sure how his route running is but luckily thatts one of the things that can be taught. All in all Id be very happy to see this kid taken by us in a later round.

That's what I was thinking when I watched the vid.

I could live with that. Maybe the real test then will be how he sounds on the radio.

I like what I saw out of Jarrett Dillard.

I know that he is a midget and a buck nothing, but I really think the kid will be a play maker given the right set of circumstances.

yessur

i think people make too much of a deal about how he’s a bad route runner. when you’re 6"6’, hip movement should not be a necessity.

I think he could have been a steal...

but I think people try too hard to find the next Marquis Colston and draft him that high. Remember, last year it was supposed to be Jerome Simpson and then in the draft he gets taken in the 2nd round by the Bengals. I think Barden will get overvalued and get drafted way to early.
