Falcons acquire TE Gonzalez from Chiefs

Star-divide

ATLANTA (AP)—The Atlanta Falcons have obtained tight end Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs for a draft pick next year.

The Falcons will send a second-round pick in 2010 to Kansas City in exchange for Gonzalez, the only tight end in NFL history selected to 10 Pro Bowls, the Chiefs announced Thursday.

Gonzalez caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008. He owns NFL career records for tight ends with 916 receptions, 10,940 yards receiving, 76 TDs receiving and 26 100-yard receiving games.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt called Gonzalez “one of the finest players in Chiefs history.”

Wow...

He’s been asking for a trade for the longest time but I never actually thought they would do it. Good for him though, he’s a stand up guy and deserves a chance to win and if Matt Ryan can improve on what he did in his rookie season, then adding a threat like Gonzales is a monumental move for their team going forward. He might only have have another 2-3 good years left in him but he’s going to help take the Falcons offense to another level.

Gonzalez is a class act,

What better way to help out a young QB then to get him one of the best TE’s in NFL history.

by Fridge72 on Apr 23, 2009 2:46 PM CDT reply actions

Yep

nothing like a great TE and running game to help a QB, esp a young one.

Should def help Ryan avoid the soph slump.

thank god he's not a viking

nor an eagle. but still tough to swallow if your team resides in the NFC. Matt Ryan in year 2, not to mention he already has a pro bowl receiver and runningback.

It's all part of the Chief's Master Plan

1. Axe better than average head coach

2. Trade away all legitimate tallent(watch out Larry Johnson)

3. Lose as many games as possible to ensure #1 pick in 2010 Draft to secure Tim Tebow.

4. Repeat step #3 for number #1 pick in 2011 and beyond…

LMAO

had to use this, just figured out what it meant.

Larry Johnson isn't legitmate anymore

He’s been brutal the last couple seasons and has had all sorts of off the field stuff.

As soon as the Hunts can swallow his contract, he’s gone.

Because when it comes to sports, we die harder than Bruce Willis.

Behind a decent O line

and an offense who’s #1 receiver is not a TE, he would still be very productive for 1-3 seasons.

true

johnson has been facing alot of 8-man fronts he last couple of years, not to mention the injuries. that happens when you run for 1,700+ yards in consecutive years and break the all-time record for carries in a season.

by ifuwannacrownem on Apr 23, 2009 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he's closer to done

Not that he couldn’t be “productive” but he’s no longer at the point where you can feed the ball to him 30 times a game.

Between injuries, attitude and off-the-field stuff… he’s closer to the door than the field in KC. At least according to my brother-in-law, the hugest KC fan ever.

I have an incredibly hard time

believing that the chiefs (or any other team for that matter) will be jockeying for the #1 pick in 2010 to pick Tebow. He’s great at what he does at Florida but I find it difficult to believe that he is a franchise quarterback. Replace Sam Bradford in #3 and I wouldn’t think you’re so crazy… Actually now that I think about it a little more I would still think you’re crazy because Pioli just traded for his guy in Matt Cassell to be their franchise quarterback and I think they’re gonna give him more than one year to prove that he can take over that job. No disrespect but I give your post a big ol’ thumbs down.

Fair Enough

I do admit that I’m not on the Chief’s payroll, and haven’t been granted access to their war room, but I don’t think KC should put all their eggs into the Matt Cassell basket. He has proven that he can do well with Randy Moss and Wes Welker, but KC is no New England.

And more to the point it was humor…hello!!!!!

Thank god...

I hope it really was just a joke, if I was a Chief’s fan I would go into depression just thinking about that lol

If you were a Chief's fan

1. Why would you be on a Bears fan post site?

2. Wouldn’t you already be in depression?

“That’s great, but who are the ‘Chefs’?”….“Great googley moogley!”

Doesn't it seem like a strange move

to get a new, young, not completely proven QB, then trade away a future hall of fame TE? Maybe they are going to target Petigrew in the draft?

Offensive Weapons

You’d think your team would want to be adding them not trading them away for next year’s draft picks.

Exactly, well said

I was just wondering if Matt Casell was thinking, “Thank God I have Mark Bradley”

Just change

Tebow for Arrelious Benn or Carlos Dunlap or any of the 5 OT studs for next year and you got it.

Herm Edwards

Is an overrated coach. He doesn’t manage the clock well and he doesn’t win very often. What 3 playoff years w/ the Chiefs and Jets?
