What's Your Take - Mohamed Massaquoi

Massaquoi_medium

With the 2009 NFL Draft hours now less than 2 days away, judging from mock drafts  Mohamed Massaquoi might be the pick.  If you ask David Haugh thinks Massaquoi would be an ideal fit to complement Devin Hester and isn't worried about what some believe to be questionable hands.

I know that ChiFan thinks there is a huge drop off between Iglesias and Massaquoi, but with the chance that Kenny Britt and Brian Robiskie looking to be off the board, how would you feel with Massaquoi as the Bears 1st draft choice?

If it is between Massaquoi and Iglesias,

I am definitely going with Iglesias. I am surprised that I haven’t heard more about Iglesias on this site, but I have done some research in the last couple of weeks on receivers and I am sold on him at 49. If that’s who we take I will be happy.

Not sure

I think some of those questions about him are legit concerns. I would say that Iglesias might be a safer pick at 49.

by Sam Householder on Apr 23, 2009 9:42 PM CDT reply actions

I like Massaquoi

I’m not sure the Bears will take him if he is there at #49 because I continue to believe that Jerry Angelo is going to take a Safety type with that position under the philosophy of looking for best available player on the board between the four positions of Wide Receiver, Safety, Cornerback and Defensive End.

The name Jarrius Byrd keeps popping into my head at #49. I will not be surprised by any stretch if the Bears wait until the #99 pick or even into the 4th round to take a Wide Receiver.

Why do you think Byrd will get drafted that high?

Because I think he is pretty dang good and flying under the radar right now

But lets also be honest, there is heavy dose of guessing involved on my part.

Yeah, I'd say so

I guarantee you that Byrd will not be a 2nd round selection.

I Agree

and I actually attended the majority of Oregon’s home games this year – Byrd is not 2nd round material.

If we stay at the 49 spot either will work I guess

I’d rather see us move up about 10 spots depending on what happens w/ certain people dropping though.

by Acreman20 on Apr 23, 2009 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

Problem is the Bears don't have the ammuntion to move up in the 2nd round

They cant’ trade the #99 pick and I doubt that trading our 4th round pick to go along with the #49 pick in what is a weak draft will enable the Bears to move up much. Plus I think Angelo uniquely covets those mid-round picks this year given the bounty given up to get Cutler and given the plethora of needs at Wide Receiver, Safety, Cornerback, Defensive End.

chances are

we trade down, just a hunch. We get an extra pick pick up big reciever in 3rd barden, turner, and address safety.

I'd say... if we trade down...

it’s only because the top 3 guys we wanted are all gone.

WR

I would never get a guy who is labeled as a guy who drops passes. The bears have had way too many receivers in the past who’s drops cost games. I would rather take a guy who is slower and not as tall but has good hands. That being said, i do think the bears will have a chance to take britt or Robiskie at 49. I also like Dominique Edison if we decide to get a WR at 99. If Britt or Robiskie are gone, I would go Inglesias then Barden then maybe Mohamed Massaquo.

by Bears-Bullsfan on Apr 23, 2009 10:22 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not a big fan of Massa

I’ll keep this short.

He drops balls. We have Rashied Davis. Two bads do not equal a good.

I'M A MAN! I'M 22!

by ChiFan13 on Apr 23, 2009 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions

you read haugh's article?
The biggest knock against him was a reputation for dropped passes, which Massaquoi earned as a sophomore and junior but overcame during a more consistent senior season.

i had been thinking the same way as you, but if the above is true then he may be a good option

by mike b on Apr 23, 2009 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

He did better last year

I’ll give him that. But even then, there were too many (IMO) times that he dropped easy passes. Not rockets, just little floaters.

Still, Mass ran a mid 4.6 at the combine, which worries me. If he’s not going to do much after the catch (IF he catches it), why draft him as a 2nd? I’ve never been a huge fan of him.

As I wrote the other day...

Why does this guy get a 2nd round grade? He drops passes! He’s a receiver… he’s supposed to catch passes!

Exactly

It’s a late high-riser who everyone seems to love. I hope Jerry doesn’t take a step back and draft him….it’ll be a sad day for me.

I'M A MAN! I'M 22!

by ChiFan13 on Apr 24, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Couldn't agree more

Hester has speed, but we have no one (WR’s) who can catch the ball with any consistency to move the chains. If Robiskie is there, take him. I’m not convinced that any of the safeties that will be on the board are a real upgrade over what we have. I still think Earl can be a sleeper if he can stay healthy. You can never go wrong in stockpiling good OL’s, so if the WR’s that are available at 49 don’t catch the ball well, I’d like to see us take the OL who is best available.

by BearFan611 on Apr 24, 2009 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I would vomit if this is our second round pick...

With a good safety guaranteed to be left on the board, along with good linemen, I’d literally want to vomit if we picked a “okay” WR with our best pick in the draft.

We run a ton of two TE sets, so as long as Bennett isn’t teribad our third WR will barely be seeing the field. Get someone that will make us noticeably better now or in the long run AKA FS or OLine.

by Jacob Hayes on Apr 23, 2009 10:35 PM CDT reply actions

I agree I'd rather have a Safety than an OK receiver

But if the draft unfolds anything like Todd McShay predicts, Delmas, Moore, and Johnson will all be gone before we pick at 49. That leaves us w/ Chung who I’m not sure is good enough to warrant that pick, in which case I’d rather see us get an O-lineman.

"The phone's for you, I think it's the Devil."

From what I've read

I’d rather have Iglesias at #49 than Massaquoi. It seems to me the former will be more reliable catching the ball, plus he has more production over his career than the latter.

Say no to Mo

He is too much of a reach at #49. I think Iglesias is our WR, if Nicks, Britt, Robiskie are all gone. If MoMass falls to #99, then consider him if the Bears pick another position at #49.

by gillrowdy on Apr 23, 2009 11:48 PM CDT reply actions

he would be available a bit later in the draft but not at 99, the Bears might take him in teh 2nd

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Apr 24, 2009 9:02 AM CDT reply actions

If Robiskie and Britt

are gone @ #49 we should go Safety and grab a WR @ #99….

Is it August yet???

by NOR CAL BEAR on Apr 24, 2009 10:25 AM CDT reply actions

Mohamed

could be a good fit, get the posession to match hester’s quickness. if he’s a little bit of a reach, we can trade down in the second, maybe pick up another 6th or something as compensation.

what i think is funny is that Massaquoi and Chris leak both went to the same high school. Chris leak was on our roster for a little while and Massaquoi could be on it. small world, huh?

by Nih1lus on Apr 24, 2009 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

what if

we go Patrick Chung @ #49 and Patrick Turner Wr out of USC @ #99? would anyone be mad @ that ? (that is considering Robiskie & Britt were already gone @ #49)

I think of Mike Williams and Dwayne Jarrett.

I really like Turner

but he’s a late round pick. I don’t know what the knock on him is, but he’s 6’5 230 lbs and he’s a specimen. I would like to see him in a Bears uni.

by McRipper on Apr 24, 2009 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Thank You

I can’t believe how underated these two playes are! I totaly agree with you! Chung actually reminds me of a faster more athletic Mike Brown. Turner is a Hard working Big reciever that is faster bigger and has better hands than Massaquoi. He is a much safer pick in round 3 than picking Massaquoi with the 2 round pick. Thanks for macking sense Nor Cal Bear.

by Reese G on Apr 24, 2009 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Chung

is a SS, which we don’t need (at least not as bad as we need a FS)

Turner is a major underachiever. He came from the same system that turned Mike Williams and Dwayne Jarrett into college superstars, but he had mediocre production. The USC WRs tend to be so much bigger and stronger than their competition that it doens’t matter that they are slow. Once they get to the NFL, their 4.6 speed and lack of elite quickness means they can’t get open.

In short, if Turner couldn’t dominate at USC, he has little chance of succeeding in the NFL. I wouldn’t mind taking him in the 5th or 6th, but I wouldn’t mind taking anyone in the 5th or 6th.

Both...

DraftCountdown.com & WalterFootball.com have Turner ranked as the #26 WR in the draft.

If you look at DraftHistory.com, you’ll see that typically there’s about 31-34 WRs selected in a draft.

his strenghts and weaknesses…..

Strengths:
Good athlete…Great size and bulk with a huge frame…Runs excellent routes…Very strong, physical and aggressive…Terrific ball skills and body control…Good hands…Plays a little faster than he times…Runs with some power…Can beat the jam…Tough and will work the middle.

Weaknesses:
Severely lacking when it comes to timed speed…Is not very quick or explosive…Doesn’t get much separation…Isn’t very elusive…Sub par blocker…Not a deep threat…Minor durability issues…Limited upside.

What I think

I think that the Bears, if they go with WR in the second, should look at better speed. The NFP (National Football Post) has a Williwams listed as the #10 WR. He has 4.47 40 speed which would go well opposite Hester and strecth the field for easier completions to the TE and the slot underneath as well as better running lanes for Forte.

We are who we think we are.
