2009 NFL Draft - Round 1 Open Thread Pt. 1

Nfl_draft_2_medium

Welcome to your 2009 Chicago Bears Draft Headquarters!

For the next 8,000 hours we will have all the picks, trades and bad Mel Kiper hair jokes you care to hear.  Below the line you will see our mini-draft challenge. ChiFan and I have built our own mock drafts alongside the WCG Community and SBN Blogger's Mock Drafts to see who actually has any idea of what they are talking about. A new post will go up at the start of the second round, so we can sweep the non-Bears first round out the door.

So click on the link, grab your favorite libation and join us as we shout in unison "We got Jay Cutler!" after every pick.

UPDATED:

12:41 PM: NFLN reporter says that San Diego may trade down, but will not select a running back at #16.

12:45 PM: NFLN has a rumor: If Jets want a player at #8, the Jaguars will flip with the Jets.

1:21 PM: Per ifuwanna's sideline reporting and Bigg's article, the Bears are actively shopping their pick to move down. I suppose if they move to early third, we could be ok. Still a little disheartening.

1:48 PM: NFL Network draftnik Mike Mayock's phone is blowin up. Why? The Jets want a QB.

I know since they moved the third round, there's that much less time today.

But I would have liked it starting early and ending early.

Final Thoughts from GG:

If Harvin falls to 49 and we take him, I might break my TV (OK that’s a lie, but I will break SOMETHING).

Can anyone explain to me why suddenly Kiper and others are putting Tyson Jackson at #3 overall to the Chiefs. It seems to be the most random jump I have ever seen, the dude was going to go mid-late first and now 3 overall before Curry?! Can anyone give me an explanation.

JA please live by the following model: Safety first if most of the WRs are gone. If there isn’t a big run on WRs, then WR first and safety second.

by Sam Householder on Apr 25, 2009 11:01 AM CDT reply actions

Tyson Jackson the Superstar

Has been bothering me too. Wasn’t his weakness that he wasn’t a pass-rushing DE, and now all of a sudden he is?

I hope he falls to Denver so that idiot McDaniels can continue his incredible task of ruining a premiere franchise in the course of one offseason. It’s really amazing to watch.

but in the absence of that, give me Pat Chung…

I would hope for a S (Louis Delmas, Rashad Johnson or Steve Smith) or DE….if those guys are gone…

I hope we pass on Massaquoi but he did supposedly have a solid pro day (running a 4.51 and 4.53) that increased his draft stock….

Saw most of the draftniks saying the WR will fall…just hope for one of the 3…

by CloudyFuture on Apr 25, 2009 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

I would like Rashad Johnson

Because on all reports… he seems to be the biggest playmaker.

However, he’s small, and from what I read this morning, the Bears want to find better size and durability at that position as well… since the rash of injuries they’ve had at saftey.

I'm ready to go!

Hoping for a good day today with either a trade for a starting WR, or a good pick of one in the second. It’s going to be a long wait…

Also, last year’s threads were great. Is the plan to do a new one every 400 comments or so? I know over that it got pretty slow.

Here's how we're gonna do it

This thread will function as the pre-draft rumors/news and the 1st round thread. Once the second round starts, we’ll toss up a new thread.

If this thread gets really laggy, let us know and we’ll try to get a new one up.
