2009 NFL Draft - Round 1 Open Thread Pt. 1
Welcome to your 2009 Chicago Bears Draft Headquarters!
For the next 8,000 hours we will have all the picks, trades and bad Mel Kiper hair jokes you care to hear. Below the line you will see our mini-draft challenge. ChiFan and I have built our own mock drafts alongside the WCG Community and SBN Blogger's Mock Drafts to see who actually has any idea of what they are talking about. A new post will go up at the start of the second round, so we can sweep the non-Bears first round out the door.
So click on the link, grab your favorite libation and join us as we shout in unison "We got Jay Cutler!" after every pick.
UPDATED:
12:41 PM: NFLN reporter says that San Diego may trade down, but will not select a running back at #16.
12:45 PM: NFLN has a rumor: If Jets want a player at #8, the Jaguars will flip with the Jets.
1:21 PM: Per ifuwanna's sideline reporting and Bigg's article, the Bears are actively shopping their pick to move down. I suppose if they move to early third, we could be ok. Still a little disheartening.
1:48 PM: NFL Network draftnik Mike Mayock's phone is blowin up. Why? The Jets want a QB.

I know since they moved the third round, there's that much less time today.
But I would have liked it starting early and ending early.

No joke
This first day is going to last into the night and then we turn around and wake up early for the second day. Whoever scheduled this wasn’t in a proper state of mind.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
i think this is more of espn's/media's fault
it’s all about the ratings allowing them to prehype it more and more analysis during prime time.

Final Thoughts from GG:
If Harvin falls to 49 and we take him, I might break my TV (OK that’s a lie, but I will break SOMETHING).
Can anyone explain to me why suddenly Kiper and others are putting Tyson Jackson at #3 overall to the Chiefs. It seems to be the most random jump I have ever seen, the dude was going to go mid-late first and now 3 overall before Curry?! Can anyone give me an explanation.
JA please live by the following model: Safety first if most of the WRs are gone. If there isn’t a big run on WRs, then WR first and safety second.

Tyson Jackson the Superstar
Has been bothering me too. Wasn’t his weakness that he wasn’t a pass-rushing DE, and now all of a sudden he is?
I hope he falls to Denver so that idiot McDaniels can continue his incredible task of ruining a premiere franchise in the course of one offseason. It’s really amazing to watch.

3-4 doesn't need to...
Hold the point and occupy blockers.
Awww, man what am I supposed to do about my sig now?
Yes... but...
Is that worth the #3 pick in the draft?
I say no.

Hell no
He’s not worth the #18 pick. Remember when we were talking about him? Like you said, he’s a DE who can’t pass rush
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
Exactly...
And Kiper had him going to the Bears back then?
Yeah… cause Lovie Smith just kills for 295lb DEs who can’t provide a pass rush. Rolls eyes… LOL.

Any of those guys would be tremendous fits...
but in the absence of that, give me Pat Chung…
Just not Massaquoi. Dude’s officially 40 was a 4.66. Oy.
The poster formerly known as Freethefro.
I would hope for a S (Louis Delmas, Rashad Johnson or Steve Smith) or DE….if those guys are gone…
I hope we pass on Massaquoi but he did supposedly have a solid pro day (running a 4.51 and 4.53) that increased his draft stock….
Saw most of the draftniks saying the WR will fall…just hope for one of the 3…
by CloudyFuture on Apr 25, 2009 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions
I would like Rashad Johnson
Because on all reports… he seems to be the biggest playmaker.
However, he’s small, and from what I read this morning, the Bears want to find better size and durability at that position as well… since the rash of injuries they’ve had at saftey.

Hester on the trading block for Boldin
per nbc 5 in Chicago:

dont think Cards can afford him.
could be wrong ,but I thought they were strapped
If you live in Chicago you are a bears fan, if you move from chicago you stay a bears fan, if you move to chicago you will be a bears fan.
So we'd get Hester
and could still take a FS at 49? Where do I sign the petition to make this happen? This would be a steal!
DEJESUS!!!
It is intriguing
But two things.
1) Do you really think Jerry would do this?
2) As long as that FS isn’t Jarrius Byrd, I’ll be happy with that :)
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
And who started that rumor?

I would offer the Cards
our 2nd a 5th and a 7th for Boldin. You have to figure your luckie if one in three draft picks starts for you. Boldin is a guarenteed starter.
if were giving up
3 picks it should be a 3rd 5th & 7th that way we can get chung @ 49….

We would still have
the 3rd 4th 5th 6th and two 7s to take care of our need’s.
do not have a 7th to trade
IIRC lost that in the Buenning trade…the two 7th round picks are comp picks and can not be traded ….

Apparently,
if you’re in a 3-4 system, your d-line doesn’t have to rush the pass at all, you just need to hope your linebackers get some rush…

McDaniels continues to try to run the Broncos into the ground
LMAO.
Run your QB off and then reach for a RB.

Poor Kyle Orton

I would love a star RB if I were him!
He won’t be blamed if the defense sucks. McDaniels will though.
Kick it to me... I'm open!
On the field, I think Kyle will be good
but off the field… McDaniels seems to be TRYING to suck.
Formerly HBCG
Orton should be even better than last year.
Spread offense, gets to throw and make mistakes, great receivers, excellent line, good young RB. He has no excuse to not be tons better.
Kick it to me... I'm open!
Redskins not wasting any time...

Ok, two things
If defense is such a big deal, McDaniels, you failed.
Two, no wonder it took the Redskins so little time….
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
I'd say Malcolm Jenkins
or Beanie.
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
Pierre Thomas has been very solid and you can draft anyone at RB with the threat
at QB they have. No one is concerned about stopping their run. Their defense is pitiful.
Kick it to me... I'm open!
there was a lot of Beanie to NO talk before
not saying it’s the right pick, but that’s what people were saying. Jenkins could probably start right away at CB and move to FS when Sharper retires.

Pierre Thomas is a diamond in the rough
he really needs to be 1st or 2nd on the depth chart as a RB.
Doesnt help that I graduated/played high school ball with him. :P

Fun little Time waster!
Any chance NO
takes Maclin to add him to the Drew Brees show?
I mean they did lose Henderson and Lance Moore.
So outside of Colston who do they have
... Henderson and Moore are still with the Saints

And Henderson was an UFA
But they resigned him in March, must have missed that.
Well guess it’s Jenkins
Malcolm Jenkins
to the Saints

Malcolm Jenkins owned Anthony Morelli. He should send him some of his signing bonus…
