Do you guys think we'll target a free agent WR too?
by Twins Territory on Apr 26, 2009 1:17 PM CDT reply actions
I doubt it. They will likely carry 4-5 WR and a practice team guy.
They don’t want to the development of these rookie receivers.
Kick it to me... I'm open!
Looks like I missed some excitment
But I brought Rice Crispy treats. That helps, right?

Johnny Knox scout vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNFsIp26RlY
Why I love this pick?
Knox plays special teams and can return which means Davis has to be gone IMO…
Knox is freakishly fast.
Mayock said he clocked him at a 4.28. If he can learn to run proper routes and maybe put on a couple pounds, he may have some real potential. Of course we don’t exactly have a track record of developing receivers, but I’m trying to stay positive on the football equivalant of a kid’s Christmas Eve. I just hope these guys don’t turn out to be a bunch of socks and a sweater from grandma. Or a dreidel, for those so inclined.

Well, what the fuck would we give them?
Ah, yeah, Ken, we’ll give you our next 5th round pick for Boldin. Straight up.

I don't know
but if AZ called us they knew we didn’t have a first this year or next.
Being Who You Thought We Were Since 2005!
On Inside the Bears
It said we had some discussions and offered a second round pick. I think they want a first or just keep him. Also, on the Sun-Times today Angelo was quoted saying we’re probably done with it.
by Twins Territory on Apr 26, 2009 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Well yeah
We have nothing to offer now. Jerry would make a move if it was feasible. At the same time, I’m not too keen on giving Boldin 9 mil a year while also trying to sign Cutler to a long-term deal.

Who cares? Isn’t the cap going buh-bye after this year? The Bears have money coming out their kiesters… time to buy buy buy buy buy buy buy

I so wish
They could have gotten Lincoln Kennedy back. They replaced him with Dukes when Linc decided to try his AFL escapade. I have to say though, I got to see him play a couple times since he was with the Tampa Storm. It was like watching a grown man playing pop-warner lol. He threw DL’s around like they were freaking rag-dolls.

They need to dump Dion too
But he at least knows what the hell he’s talking about when he gets serious. It’s just his obnoxious BS that drives me nuts. I was surprised how knowledgable he is when he drops the “prime-time” persona and actually breaks down the game.

He’s a good ST player and he’s quick as hell. And he doesn’t drop balls. If Rashied Davis is still a Bear, I’ll be pissed.

Unless
Knox can line up at safety, i think this is a terrible pick.

Scoot wrights scouting on Knox
Strengths:
Smooth athlete…Adequate height…Outstanding timed speed…Quick with great acceleration and a burst…Soft, reliable hands…Good body control and ball skills…Elusive…Nice vision and instincts…Solid route runner…Vertical threat who can really separate…Terrific production.
Weaknesses:
Doesn’t have the ideal bulk that you look for…Not very strong…Won’t break a lot of tackles…Trys hard but isn’t a great blocker…Worked as a return man but didn’t stand out…Is facing a big jump in competition.
Notes:
Started out at Tyler (TX) Junior College, where he was a 2nd Team All-American…Owns the ACU record for touchdown receptions…Was named 1st Team All-Lone Star Conference in 2007 and 2008…Had a strong showing at the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game (3 REC | 55 YDS | 1 TD)…Really caught peoples attention with his performance at the Scouting Combine…Intriguing speed and production…Profiles as a slot receiver at the next level and can also contribute on special teams.
I take enough about my spelling and typing
cool to give it back once in awhile.
Being Who You Thought We Were Since 2005!
He tries hard
That’s fine with me. If he’s willing to work and won’t be a little bitch about working hard, I’ll cut him some slack.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
From Inside the Bears:
Curtis Taylor, LSU
Michael Hamlin, Clemson
Chris Clemons, Clemson
Otis Wiley, Michigan State
Troy Nolan, Arizona State
The Bears poked around a little bit on Clemons in the last two weeks and there is a chance they go with Wiley. Stay tuned here.

I like Hester… something about a homegrown guy who will get better and is cheaper, a lot cheaper than Bouldin. And Hester can do some things that Bouldin can’t, but we’re not using him for that anyway… and as I said above… the Bears will have as much money to do whatever they want next year anyway.

We have Danieal Manning and Johnny Knox for returning now
So we’d be traded a mediocre WR for Boldin.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
No Way
Hester is showing a strong development a wide receiver and has Steve Smith potential. Boldin is a great #2 receiver without deep speed. Boldins stats suffer severely against upper echelon corners, we are gonna pay him a ton of money to see his stats fail ecause we don’t have a Larry Fitzgeral; it would be Mushin Muhammad part duex

The Cubs have to bite the bullet on one of the day-to-day guys soon...
…and DL somebody. We’re down to a 2-man bench here, 3 if you include Milton.
Milton
which you shouldn’t… they need to bite the bullet on releasing Miles and Gathright for some people who can produce and might play… AND cutting the pitching staff down to 11 guys… which means jettisoning Patton and Cotts because combined they can’t get anybody out. And the Cubs right now, can’t afford to have people on their roster for the long-term or short-term who can’t do their jobs.

more negativity/deadhorse beating
without Lee… they HAVE to put Soriano back in the middle of the lineup… they’re completely out of guys who can bat in the middle and produce… they have Theriot, Fukudome and Johnson who can get on base and play small to set up for the surviving run producers
Here’s the lineup:
1. Theriot ss
2. Johnson cf
3. Fukudome rf
4. Soriano lf
5. Hoffpauir 1b
6. Soto c
7. Fontenot 3b
8. Miles 2b

they’re really not overrated. Teams with good lineups score runs and win ball games… teams with bad lineups that don’t effectively set up their run producers fail… epically. Lots of teams have done far, far more with far, far less than the Cubs have… healthy or not.

This is not the time or place for this convo...
…but the effect of moving the pitcher to the leadoff spot is, what, 10-15 runs a season? And that’s probably 5-8x more drastic than any move that’s under consideration when people discuss lineups. Not a big deal.
so...
I don’t care about leadoff hitters, etc… I want guys who get on base leading in to guys who can drive them in… having our 8 hitter and the pitcher/pinch hitter spot leading into Soriano is not an effective use of resources and cost this team much, much more than 10-15 runs. That’s just off of his homers.
I talk about this everywhere and anywhere with anybody I can. Unlike discussing meaningless 5th-round draft picks, this is life-and-death stuff. lol j/k

Going into a game with Reed Johnson as your fifth hitter with a rhp on the mound… will end up in situations like we just saw… bases loaded, only scoring one run. Completely because of poor lineup construction.

Freeman report
Production 1 2004: Freeman appears in all 13 games of his true freshman season. 2005: Freeman sustains a season-ending injury in the season opener and the NCAA grants him a medical red-shirt (see durability). 2006: Freeman starts 11 of the 13 games he appears in accumulating 71 total tackles, two interceptions and six pass breakups. 2007: Freeman starts all 13 games accumulating 109 total tackles including 66 solo tackles, 9.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. He also breaks up five passes and forces two fumbles. 2008: Freeman starts all 13 games accumulating 84 tackles, 9.5 tackles-for-loss and 3.5 sacks. He breaks up four passes and recovers a fumble.
Height-Weight-Speed 3 Adequate height, bulk and top-end speed.
Durability 4 2005: Sustains a knee injury in the season opener, Staph infection slows recovery and misses the entire season. 2008: Sustains ankle injury and it hinders him for much of the year.
Character 2 Excellent special teams’ players, made great strides during time at Ohio State and willing to line up on the inside or the outside.
And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.
Freeman Outside Linebacker specific Traits
Instincts/Recognition 3 Hesitates for a split second and takes some false steps making it easier for blockers to get into position but keeps head up, locates the ball carrier and quickly recovers.
Pursuit/Point of Attack 3 Elite upper body strength and can keep blockers off frame but still inconsistent in this area and takes too long to disengage when blocker is able to lock on. Keeps shoulders square to the line of scrimmage and shows good lateral mobility when scraping down the line of scrimmage. Closes down cutback lanes by taking sound pursuit angles but also creates running lanes by trying to run around blockers rather than stacking them up in the hole.
Tackling 2 Has developed into a fairly reliable open field tackler that shows good body control in space, wraps up on contact and flashes the ability to deliver the big hit.
Pass Coverage 3 Keeps receivers in front of him and shows adequate burst coming out of backpedal. Appears to read quarterback’s eyes but isn’t aggressive enough and lacks ideal ball skills. Though lacks elite man-to-man cover skills shows adequate burst coming out of cuts and can hold own in man coverage when gets safety help over the top. Has some experience lining up over slot receivers and can reroute them hips are a bit stiff and can’t match up with slot receivers in man coverage.
Pass Rusher 3 Quick enough to turn the corner in the NFL and shows adequate-to-good closing speed when gets a clear path to the quarterback. Times blitzes well. (see 2008 Minnesota game) Relentless but doesn’t show a variety of pass rush moves and doesn’t protect legs making him vulnerable to cut blocks. (see first half of 2007 Washington game)
And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.
I still would have rather had a safety
But this guys seems like a legit pick for ST…

Another Freeman report
Marcus Freeman – Scouting Report
OLB – Outside linebacker
- / Ohio State
Scout: Luke Chandler
Date: March 9th, 2009
Measurables
Height: 6’0"
Weight: 239
40 Time: 4.74
Bench Press: 30
Vertical: 37"
3 Cone: 6.98
Best Fit Position/Role: Starting weak-side linebacker
Ideal Scheme: Tampa 2
Strengths: Freeman is a quick linebacker with above average athleticism. He is exceptionally well built and muscular, with good thickness throughout. He changes directions quickly and is a superb athlete for the position. He moves well laterally and is a three down linebacker. His speed allows him to make plays that other linebackers cannot make. He defends the pass well, and has good awareness in zone coverage. He does not often bite on play-action fakes, and he deciphers plays quickly. Freeman has the kind of building blocks that coaches love.
Weaknesses: His lack of height can be a detriment at times. Despite having great workout ability and athleticism, it doesn’t always show up on the field. He struggles against power run teams that can get physical blockers into his body. At times he lacks the aggression and killer instinct. Too often he’ll allow plays to develop in front of him, rather than attempting to break up the play. He also relies too heavily on his speed to mask his lack of technique. He often will out-run a blocker or take bad angles just to avoid contact.
Overall: Freeman has a good deal of upside and should do well in the NFL. He has great speed, quickness, and a base to build upon. He has suspect technique, but he is a highly teachable player. He will likely sit for at least a season, and will be a strong special teams player. If placed in a defense that will allow him to flow to the ball and keep blockers off of him, he could be a strong force at outside linebacker.
Injury Concerns: He has overall durability concerns. Redshirted 2005 season due to knee ligament tear. Stuggled with a ankle sprain in 2008 season.
Could Be As Good As: Morlon Greenwood – Houson Texans
Worst Case: James Anderson – Carolina Panthers
Where He’ll Probably Go: Mid 2nd to Late 3rd
Where He Should Go: Early 3rd
What scouting service is that?
I like the way it’s structured.
And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.
well it seems like great value in the 5th

I've only had one "uh-oh" moment all day
On balance, I think we’ve done great with the picks we’ve had.
And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.
ESPN's top 10 available on Day 2

SLB is huge in 4-3
thats why i really like this pick. this guy will start for us on a high percentage of defensive snaps
The Bears reps said he will be a WILL... right on Bears website

i like our safeties
i think glen earl and bullocks will both play well. we also needed a weak side lb, and freeman was better than any safety that is currently on the board
just venting
b/c the bulls arent helping what i think of some of the draft
would have liked
FS and a OL or two, not sold on all the free agents we brought in, also need quality depth for injuries in case
You fill short-term needs with free agents.
Which there will be more of when teams get into camp and start cutting players they don’t need/can’t fit into cap after the draft.
and on the bulls
close doesnt count winning does
seeing as we don't pick again til 190
I’m going to get some stuff done/enjoy the weather outside.

But I'm going to wait
I can’t stand Judd Sirott and he’s on right now… so I’ll stay for this inning.
Formerly HBCG
prolly a OL in the 7th
no FS prolly and a couple guys that are values acorrding to JA …. expect one more LB for ST
We gotta aim for some guys who have fallen
Like G Duke Robinson, or RB Rashad Jennings

Anything you get past the 5th Round is gravy
So I’m thinking about how the guys we acquired so far have changed the roster.
And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.
No way
you do need to field a team and have some kind of cohesion and overall it is a team sport, best available is a luxury that never happens or happens only with a couple times a draft
Obviously a player’s fit for the team’s system and their “intangibles” factor into whether or not they’re the best available for your team, to the extent that those things matter. Not every team has the same idea – or even SHOULD have the same idea – of who is the best available player.
But once you’ve identified who that best available player is for your team, that’s the guy you take, regardless if it’s a position of need or of depth for your team.
Buh Bye DUKE
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Beer in one hand - brat in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride
Damn. Duke is gone...
OK… my next pick at Guard is
Paul Fanaika
Arizona St.

Offensive line
I’m an O-line junkie, and I’ll just say that I’m still waiting for the year when we go into the draft and load up on beef. Mebbe next year.
And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.
agree
team with the best O and D lines wins…… I just hope to hell ours stays healthy, cuz we havent drafted any help for our O line…..dont like it
Wow
The Dolphins are taking all of ChiFans picks.
My best friend is a phins fan. He’s never gonna stop laughing about this

shaffer
being knocked down to backup guard and tackle is good for our o-line. i think the line looks much better (on paper) than in a lot of years.
That guy Freeman has a injury history
Bad injury history

5th round pick...
he’s not going to be perfect. I’d rather get talent there that has an injury history than roster filler that’ll stay healthy.

Uhh
How can he contribute if injuries hinder his progression? Why not get somebody healthy who can has talent?

Yes, but some of them are talented in a practice squad sort of way...
…and some of them are talented in an NFL team sort of way.
if you're on a practice squad,
then you’re on an NFL team.

Look at it this way.
Imagine that you and a bunch of your buddies were allowed to draft from Best Buy, instead of buying stuff from there like you normally do. Every draft spot has a dollar value attatched to it – you pay “slot” for that item, regardless of its normal price tag.
The ideal is to draft something that is worth more than what the slot value is. The next best thing is to draft something worth slot. If you have a 50" plasma TV and an Xbox 360 both left on the board, you draft the plasma TV even if you already have a TV and don’t have an Xbox. You can always pitck up an Xbox in the post-draft free agents or get someone else’s used Xbox from GameStop or whatever after the cuts.
