Are We Gonna Re-Sign Mike Brown?

I like the "best available player" draft strategy as a rule, and I understood the idea of letting Brown go to develop a Free Safety of the Future. But, boy, do those two things not go together well this year. It seems kinda silly to keep a veteran who knows the defense off the team now that it's clear that his stock around the league is low enough he could be had for cheap and the only real alternative is a guy who busted out for New Orleans and who the Bears' management had so little faith in that they offered only a one-year rehab contract. What's the point in not bringing Brown back to compete with Bullocks?

I'll confess that I'm not a draft guy, so maybe one of y'all can help - do Chris Harris-caliber free safeties pop up in the late rounds often, or was he a fluke? I suppose if Jerry's got his eye on someone who he thinks is a starter going late, I'd be interested in hearing about it, but as it is, I just can't imagine going into this season with guys they have so little faith in. How does that bode for Brown?

Mike Brown

Will be more likely signed as a coach and not a player this year.
We got Freeman late, and he will be a player. Got him cheap, and good value IMHO.

except that he's an OLB

Sorry-

Didn’t mean Freeman was a S.

No

was in a recent Chalk Talk article with Larry Mayer. I wish he was coming back, if he gets injured (let’s face it it’ll probably happen) he can pick up a clipboard and be a coach.

Mike Brown’s passion for the game is infectious, I just hope he wasn’t Patient 0.

Mike Brown

Re-signing MBrown is a waste of time, money and a roster spot. He has proven beyond all reasonable doubt that he cannot stay healthy. Time to let him go.

We tried to

But he blew out his ACL while walking to Angelo’s office. Then broke his foot getting off the operating room table.

No

Mike Brown is washed up and finished in the NFL. Bears will be fine at Safety. Look for them to look at the veteran scrapheap for additional training camp competition. Reaching on the dubious safety class available in the draft would have been a mistake.

Anybody but manning is fine with me.

You’d have to think Stelz and Payne would be starters?

going into Bulls playoff lock down..now!

Payne Yes

Steltz maybe

I would say Payne is in good shape to be a starter

The key in my mind to the entire defensive secondary is Nathan Vasher. Is he finally going to be healthy and actually contribute positively on the football field, or will he wind up being a training camp casualty with somebody like a Corey Graham taking his spot??? I think Nathan Vasher is on the hotseat. Don’t assume he is a lock to make this team.

Vasher will still be on the Roster this season

the entire secondary has been so bad because we haven’t gotten pressure from the front 4 which is the entire basis for the Tampa 2. That is why JA and LS have been drafting Defensive Line.

Vasher

Good point. If Vasher can regain his form, he is a solid NFL CB, but I am skeptical he will regain his form. Tillman is showing signs of losing his edge also, so maybe he needs to move to safety?

Now we have Al Afalava also.

He looks pretty good from what I saw on youtube highlights. and he looked good at the combine.

Afalava

Hits like a LB, decent size and speed, cover skills are iffy. I like his chances better than Steltz.

I really like Payne

i only get a chance to watch a few games all year with sorry AFN but at the packer (home)game last year man did he come up big on that one interception. Also he had a good game against Tampa too did he not? I just have a good feeling about Payne.

one thing's for sure...

either alfalava starts, or he’ll push steltz and payne to step up their game… manning is solid at the nickel, at least IMO… now as far as brown is concerned, i know i’m not the only one to watch him come out of nebraska (used to date a girl from there who loved her college ball…did anybody know they actually used to be called the bug eaters???), and think we were set at safety for the next ten years. i admit that the injuries started to take it’s toll, but everybody needs an emotional leader both on the field and in the lockeroom. it was a necessary evil, but i’m gonna miss him!!!

Maybe one of his top-10 favorites of all time?

If not, then I got nuthin’…
