Bears land 4 of the "Best Available Prospects" on Day 2

The Bears chose to sit on the sidelines of the first day of the draft, by trading their only pick (#49) on Day 1. However, that didn't stop them from landing some of the best prospects.

After the first two rounds of the draft concluded on Saturday, many web sites started to publish their lists of the "Best Players Available on Day 2." So, how did we do?

Well, surprisingly, the Bears were able to grab 4 of the consensus top players available on Day 2 of the draft:

Round 3, Pick #68 - Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose State
Round 3, Pick #99 - Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma
Round 4, Pick #119 - D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt
Round 5, Pick # 154 - Marcus Freeman, OLB, Ohio St.

From a value standpoint, you have to give the Bears credit for trading down, and still finding a way to select a handful of the best prospects on the second day.

Let's take a look at the lists:

I was pretty upset

with our first pick, because I think he is kind of a project, and I’d rather take those a little later. But I really like the rest of our picks. I would have been fine with Iglesias (or maybe even Moore) at 42, so I love them where we got them. And Alfava seems like a nice value late, a big hitter who can compete with Payne or potentially be a real force on special teams.

Not sure if Freeman can play Sam, but he seems like a nice value as well.

Mostly I love how that I have heard of all of the Bears picks so far. Usually they make their second round picks and I’m like “who?”.

Maybe you just paid better attention this year? :)

I agree with you though. I didn’t know a ton about Gilbert, so I was initially upset. Once I looked at some of the draft notes, I got happier and happier with the selection. He’s freakishly athletic at the minimum, and even if he’s just that, I think Marinelli can whip him into somethin.

Definitely a gamble on Gilbert.

He’s a boom or bust. But hey, I’m a gambler. Hot Rod must like what he sees.

gilbert's fine...

it’s the whole melton thing that worries me!!! there is no way that he was the best available at the time. a FA signing after the draft, fine… but to waste a mid-round pick on an unproven player??? besides that, i’m very excited with our other picks… hopefully this longhorn proves me wrong

I have to say...

This draft ended better than I thought it would, but it’s really hard for me to forgive them passing on Sean Smith once, and Rashad Johnson twice.

If our FS situation isn’t resolved by Game 1, I’m going to be irate.
