53 man roster
Here's how the Bears looked last August.
3 QB's, 4 RB's, 1 FB, 6 WR's, 3 TE's, 8 O-linemen, 9 D-linemen, 6 LB's, 5 CB's, 5 Safe, 3 Specialists.
How I see it this year (bold is a change from last year:
3 QB's (Cutler, Hanie, unsigned veteran)
3 RB's (Forte, Jones, Wolfe or AP 1 will get cut I think)
1 FB (probably be Mckie, but I'm hoping its not.)
5 WR's (Hester, Iglesias, Bennett, Davis unfortunately, Rideau or Knox (Kinder lands on PUP list to redshirt for a year because of past injuries, just a hunch on this.)
3 TE's (Olsen, Clark, Kellen Davis or Louis depending on who's the better blocker)
8 O-linemen (Williams, Shaeffer, Pace, Omiyale, Kreutz, Beekman, Garza, Buenning)
9 D-linemen (Anthony Adams, Harris, Ogunleye, Brown, Harrison, Idonije, Anderson, Gilbert, and Melton) cya Toeana and Dvoracek unless they keep 10 to get another DT on the roster or Melton doesn't cut it.
6 LB's (Briggs, Hillenmeyer, Roach, Urlacher, Freeman, Jamar Williams)
6 CB's (Tillman, Vasher, McBride, Graham, Moore, Danieal Manning is a CB now because he's the nickel) Hamilton is out.
5 Safe (Payne, Steltz, Bullocks, Bowman now a FS, Earl or Afalava depending on FS ability and special teams play)
3 Specialists (Robbie Gould, Patrick Mannelly, Brad Maynard)
1 Spot Left
The only changes from last year were the reduction in number or RB's and WR's. I added an extra defensive back because the Bears were thin at the position last year and seem to have a big need there. Whether Bowman or Manning are considered safeties or corners isn't important, but I think the Bears will keep 11 db's instead of the 10 they had last year.
This leaves 1 more roster spot open...defensive tackle is an option especially if Harris ends up with lots of days off during training camp; so is 4th RB to keep AP on the roster. If the backup LB's and Safeties excel on Special Teams, I can see AP being shown the door. 6th WR is a real possibility too. Especially if some unknown veteran is picked up.
What do you think?

You could be right on the db's but
I think they will keep 10 again. I think they will stay thin at safety and go with 6 WR’s with the addition of Cutler unless they have 5 really stand out guys that they are comfortable with at wideout. Mckie is average and I hope they decide to go with someone else as well.

Who's out then?
Vasher, McBride or both Earl and Afalava? If the Bears stick with only 3 rb’s, they can keep 11 db’s and 6 wr’s.

I think 3 rb's is a good idea,
and as far as db’s are concerned that is a good question. Of course if Vasher show’s the same game he had three years ago, he should be a shoe in. But remember their defensive backfield looked a little different three years ago and so did their defense. I truly think their db’s are in the same kind of contest that their wr’s are in, may the best man win the job who ever it is. That is what I really liked about Ditka, he didn’t care who you were, if you weren’t producing he didn’t hesitate to bench you and put someone else in the game (not to mention a good ass chewing).

Nathan Vasher will be on the bubble
The Bears have lost significant faith in Vasher. He’s either been hurt or not very good on the football field the last two seasons. Plus he makes a lot of money for his level of production.

Personally
I feel Vasher will regain his ‘05-’06 form and bounce back. Just my gut feeling

I sure hope so
I don’t think he’s just a flash in the pan. I think that groin injury is still affecting his performance. From experience, I know those groin injuries tend to linger for a while. Look at how it’s affecting John Salmons.

Injuries happen in professional football, hence why most careers don't last beyond 5 or 6 seasons...

Most careers don't last more than 5 or 6 seasons?
Looking at your sig, is that just something you think, or do you have a link on average tenure? That would be interesting to look at…

I actually did a little research,
and found a link on the NFLPA site that stated the average is about 3.5 seasons. That surprised me initially, but then I figured that injuries probably play only a very small part in that equation.

I hope so to and I understand the injury has to be a bad one
but last year was pretty rough. I just want to see the best man win the job no matter who it is. If Vasher is that man I hope he steps up and proves it before the season. Like you and Acre, I believe he will be back to his ’05 – ’06 form.

If our D-line can return back to stellar play
A healthy Vasher will probably revert to form as well. He’s a ballhawk who fits in very well with our zone coverages.
But, when we aren’t defending the run very well with our front 4, our CBs suddenly become run defenders. And that’s not Vasher’s strong suit.

I dont' think it is as simple as that
Vasher makes too much money for not contributing a lick the last two seasons. He might have been a “ball hawk” a couple years ago, but that was a couple years ago. I really do believe that the Bears (to include Lovie) have significantly soured on Vasher to the point where he will be fighting to make the roster during the training camp.

so you think that all of a sudden
after three productive seasons he decided to flip the switch to “suck” ? I don’t think so. Vasher has been battling injuries the past two seasons which has hampered his performance. it happens all the time. when healthy, he’s the best cover corner on our team, so why the hell would he be fighting for a roster spot and who would he be fighting with? Corey Graham? he’s not a cover corner.

I disagree
If Corey Graham and DJ Moore flash good things in training camp then I think it will seal the fate of Nathan Vasher. The Bears in my opinion will part company with Vasher before the season starts.

The Bears seem big on Graham. Just the impression I got from last season, though you could say that with Vasher out so much, they had to be.

Vasher
Injuries take their toll and it is very possible, maybe even likely that Vasher will not be the same as he was.

D-line
No question improved DL play will help. A pass rush can coverup weaknesses in the secondary. If Marinelli can retool the vets and rookies of the DL into a group that will stuff the run and generate consistent pressure, the DBs will look a lot better. But they cannot assume that is going to happen, so they need to look long and hard at Vasher. The last couple of years he has been a marginal player. Maybe he is healthy and ready to be the cover guy/ball hawk he once was. Maybe not. Thankfully the team is not assuming all will be fine with Vasher and has been trying to stockpile cover guys.

Exactly
It does not take much for a CB to lose it in the NFL, and Vasher gives every indication he has lost it the last couple of seasons. If he comes back in his old form, great, but I am grateful that Angelo is not assuming anything.

Love the PUP list move with Kinder
I forgot the Bears have taken advantage of that in the past.

The extra spot... hmmm...
Let’s see.
It could go to a WR (if they really like 6 guys)
It could go to a D-lineman (since they are likely to rotate a lot and keep fresh legs and motors running to rush the passer under Marinelli)
It could go to a RB (since they value special teams play from Wolfe and AP)
it could go to a G (Tyler Reed)

I Hope it goes to a WR
We need all the help we can get and I am curious to see how all these guys pan out. Or I hope they cut Davis over one of our rooks.
I could see them cutting Wolfe if, for the third year in a row, they cannot come up with a good package for him to be utilized properly (Knowing Ron Turner he probably won’t).

True re: Wolfe; unfortunately, not really making much use of a 3rd round draft pick…..
by Spongie on Apr 29, 2009 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
With the addition of Cutler, Wolfe will be better.
In situational downs they can bring in Wolfe. Last year, Orten did not scare defenses, so we saw alot of 8 in the box to stop the run game. That won’t be the case that often this year, because if Cutler sees a situation like that he will hit Hester/Bennett/Iglesias for big chunks of yardage. The defenses we face will have to respect Cutler’s arm more than Orten’s.
With even one less defender on the line, it will open up more holes for Wolfe. He isn’t Christian Okoye, he can’t knock an entire defence on its butt. However, if he is given a chance to use is speed in the open field, I think he can be used as a “Sproles type”(no I’m not saying he’s as good as Sproles) situational weapon.

Our O-line and the screen pass.
We’ve seen Wolfe take a screen pass and make things happen. The Bears O-line has been poor in blocking on screen passes for years. Anyone know how the new additions might do in this respect? Having some linemen who are capable of getting downfield and hitting someone will make the screen pass a dangerous weapon for Forte, Jones, and especially Wolfe.

Yep, he will make everything better.
I remember the first time Ditka put Mcmahon in a game. I was always cussing, “damn, none of our WR’s are ever open”. Then all the sudden Mcmahon goes in the game and it seemed like they were all open. Funny how that was. I know Mcmahon wasn’t thought of as a great qb by many, but wow what a difference from what we had.

I just dont see the necessity for Wolfe
catching screen passes. Forte has proved he is very good at catching the pass and would serve as a better blocker then wolfe. Putting Wolfe in the backfield is kind of like tipping off what play will be run IMO. With Forte back there the defense cannot assume anything. I just dont see any situation where Wolfe makes much sense. Unless Kevin Jones gets hurt Wolfe is a very expendable player. That being said, so is AP if other players come in and can do what he does on special teams. Sooo, if AP proves to be not needed on Special Teams he will be the odd man out due to Wolfe being more explosive and having, home run, potential. Personally, neither one of them thrills me, Flip a coin.

Agreed
That’s why I say its one or the other come August. One other thing to consider is JA’s former reluctance to give up on high draft picks. He went against that last year and cut Okwo and Bazuin. Wolfe had to stay last year because Kevin Jones was a big question mark and many thought he would be on the PUP list to start the season. With the Cutler trade, JA will not warrant much criticism for cutting a former 3rd round pick. He gets criticized more for holding on too long. Wolfe is going to have to really impress to keep his roster spot.

You're right... he won't get cut.
Cause I bet $100 he’ll be hurt, and they’ll have to put him on IR.

Why?
He can’t cost much against the cap. And he’s shown potential to be pretty good when healthy and on the field. I think the Bears will see how he looks through camp and will decide his fate at the last of the roster cuts. I’m not saying he won’t be cut, but saying he’s a shoo-in is a bit premature.

When he plays he’s pretty good, but he cannot stay on the field. The guy is an injury waiting to happen. How much more time should they wait for this guy to put together an entire season?

I don't see any way Afalava isn't a PS player...
I also wouldn’t be surprised to see both Davis and McKie cut, and possibly AP.
I’m also fairly positive that we’ll be keeping 10 DLineman, since that’s going to be the position with the most loss this coming offseason.

Afalava
We’ll see. If he shows cover skills, he’s in as the guy hits like a train and would be great in run support. The only question is can he cover. Even if he does not earn a starting spot, he would be great on special teams with his speed and hitting power. I think he has more skills than Steltz.
