The Case for Williams at Guard

I recently made a statement on another thread that I beleve that Chris Williams shoud be moved to LG.

My version of the line would look like:

LT Pace                6'7"    325 lbs

LG WIlliams         6'6"    312 lbs

C Kruetz                6'2"    292 lbs

RG Omiyale          6'4"   310 lbs

RT Shaffer             6'5"   315 lbs

Star-divide

That is an average of 6'5" and 312 lbs.

Williams would not have the run blocking responsibilites that the RG considering that the LG always has the C or the LT helping. LG is the easiest and least physical of the line positions; it will allow Williams to develop as a T and give him experience on the field.

What do you guys think?

No backup T then.

If 1 of the tackles is hurt, then 2 positions on the line get disrupted. 1 of the starting guards is the backup T and then a backup guard comes in. So 1 injury causes 2 position changes. This lineup puts the most talent on the field, but I think having a backup swing tackle allows for a smaller disruption to the line in the case of a tackle injury.

If this is indeed what the Bears are thinking, then we still need a backup tackle to avoid a “1 injury causes 2 changes” scenario.

Well,

We didn’t pull a Ditka and give up all of our draft picks, so we could still draft anOLineman that could either start or contribute to depth.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious. (Vince Lombardi)

I do kind of wish we didn't have mini-camp already.

With all the changes to the O-line and QB position, I think we need one sooner rather than never.

You do realize that we had mini-camp to re-evaluate just how "close" we really were.

And I think the Bears realized, they weren’t as “close” as they thought they were.

Since mini-camp… they replaced their QB and their LT.

Might not have traded for cutler if not for the minicamp.

There is no reason tou could not

put Williams or Omillye back at tackle if Pace or Schaffer got hurt and put Beekman in at the guard spot. I am assuming if they went with this line that Garza would be a cap cut.

I think,

there needs to be more continuity on an Oline than that. If Williams was playing LG and Pace or Schaffer were hurt. By moving Williams to either position and substituting Beekman there, two postions would be changed instead of one.

I think an Oline is more effective with more consistency. Just my opinion.

Chris Williams is odd man out

Clear to me he is being chalked up as a bust and/or the back injury is more troubling than the Bears have let on. Williams is not a candidate to play Right Tackle because that is a position where you need brute strength and a road grader type. Hence what Kevin Shafer brings to the table and hence he is the new Right Tackle in my book.

Williams? I guess he either goes on IR or stays on the roster as backup tackle. And this from a 14th pick when all the other offensive lineman picked in the 1st round last year have already become foundational pieces on their respective teams. Ugh.

Tad early yet

I think we have to be patient and wait until training camp before deciding CW’s fate. JA and company are making sure they have enough depth on the line just in case there’s an injury. Hopefully I’m right!

Agreed

though I think that JA wants to have his bases covered in case Williams is a bust. Which means that the thought must have crossed his mind.
