The Key to Cutler
Like most of you, I'm am sick of hearing from the ESPN crew regarding this trade. Mark Schlereth made one intelligent comment (a QB is no good without an offensive line) but forgot to mention one critical fact (as he was bashing the Bears) regarding Cutler: Jay evades the rush and throws on the run as well, if not better than most QB's in the NFL.
Whether it's a designed rollout or just buying time out of the pocket, Cutler does this as well as anyone. What is the enduring memory of SB 43? Besides the 100 yard TD by Harrison and the great game-winning catch by Holmes, it's "Big Ben" escaping the pocket to make critical plays late in the game.
That type of ability isn't big. It's HUGE!
Unlike Grossman (the statue) and Orton, Cutler is a master at this. Nobody (even Big Ben) throws longer and more accurately on the run than Jay Cutler.
It's a new era in "Bear Football."

For the most part,
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Though IMO both Grossman and Orton were statues. Considering their respective ages, they both had about the same amount of mobility as Jim Miller.
Analysts Smanalysts
Why do all these "analysts" keep blasting the Bears for giving up so much for Cutler in the Draft? They also blast the Bears for focusing to much on one player while this team has holes all over, specifically in the offensive and defensive lines. They fail to mention how the Bears signed TWO starting Tackles in the past 2 weeks. Obviously, Orlando Pace multi-time Pro Bowler for Left Tackle. Not to mention a player who I think will be just as great of an addition this off season: Kevin Shaffer. I really feel he will be the starting Right Tackle and perform exceptionally well as Chris Williams hopefully continues to grow under Pace. If Beekman, Garza, and Reed? can give the offensive guard position some consistency, I think the Bears offensive line will be one of the better O-Lines in the NFC.
Oh by the way, I agree with you about Cutler and throwing on the run. Such a great quality to have. Dilfer and Schlereth (Can ya tell Schlereth was a Bronco most of his career?? hmm) make Orton seem like the 2nd coming of Terry Bradshaw "Tough, Gritty, Smart". While I stand by the fact I liked Orton as a solid game manager, most of the time the Bears won in spite of him not because of him. Get that straight.
Now receivers? Yes, I think the Bears are 1 solid big receiver and a Jay & Earl show reunion away from having a solid 3 deep core. Size, speed, and catch-ability.
Defense? Two years ago this defense carried the Bears to the Super Bowl. Loss of Mike Brown, Chris Harris, Tank Johnson and… well thats about it… mostly all the other defensive players are intact. Getting older, sure but I think last years shaky performances could be contributed more to a poor defensive scheme and obviously the injuries. With Tommie and Dusty pushing up the middle it’ll give Brown, Ogunleye, and Anderson a little more freedom on the outside. Now, secondary needs some help and I don’t mean Josh Bullocks. If Vasher and Tillman play like they can, then cornerbacks are no problem. Especially with the young guns like Mcbride and Graham in the waiting.
Similar to what you said before GeoMak… The Bears still have a FULL Draft ahead of them to get some depth. If you ask what about the first round pick they gave up, think about it… does this sound better?
In the first round of the 2009 NFL draft the Chicago Bears take a 25 year old Pro Bowl QB.
Now J.A. do what you do and find a couple sleepers with your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 7th round draft picks.
Besides all of his amazing passing talents...
Cutler, like you said… does something we haven’t had in a long time: he can extend the play. And that’s when big things happen. You can’t cover everyone that long…
As for Schlereth… what a douchebag. He said Cutler will be on his back all day because we don’t have a line. Was he not paying attention that same afternoon when we signed a HOF Left Tackle? Was he not paying attention over the last several weeks when we added two other lineman, both under 30? He must have not, because he still thinks Brandon Lloyd is on our team. LOL.
Also, the critics keep saying the Bears have holes (like any other team, duh) and now we don;t have the draft picks to fill those holes. WHAT? What draft picks did we really lose here?
With the 18th pick of the 2009 draft… the Chicago Bears select Jay Cutler.
We traded our 3rd rounder in 2009… but we are getting a 3rd round comp pick for Berrian. So… we still have a pick in that round. We have 8 picks in this draft. Is that not enough to fill holes? What am I missing here?
And next year, we give up our 1st round. That’s basically the only pick we’re really losing here. Next year’s 1st… and given our track record in the 1st round… that’s not such a bad thing.

Jerry Angelo trades for Jay Cutler! (4.2.2009)
.
+1
I totally agree well said.
While we don’t have as many high draft picks we still have draft pics. And correct me if I’m wrong but hasn’t JA done some of his better drafting in the later rounds of the draft?
If things came easy, then everybody would be great at what they did, let's face it.

Yeah his 1st round
history isnt all that great. He has been better in the later rounds. And to Cutlers mobility, could that be why he was only sacked 11 times last year. Not because his Oline was “SOOOO” good. I think he will be fine behind ours especially after our recent additions.
