Mr. Angelo, the Broncos are on the Phone
I know it's yesterdays news, but I can't help but wonder what was going through JA's mind the other day. Forget the Bears "team" right now, I'm just thinking about JA:
Angelo: "Let me see if I get this straight Mr. Bowlen. Pretty much for two #1 picks, we can have Jay Cutler?"
Bowlen: "That's right."
Angelo puts down the phone and starts thinking to himself: (Let's see. I can hold on to these two #1 picks and select two players, and almost assuredly end up being ridiculed by Bear fans worldwide cause I usually draft crappy players in the 1st. OR. I can "eliminate my 1st round dilemma" and swap those draft picks for a young, stud Pro-Bowl QB who, at least in the short term and maybe until the end of the universe, will make me the Most Popular Man in the City of Chicago).
Angelo rushes back to the phone: Pat. Are you kidding me? Is this still "April Fools Day?" Don't F++K with me Pat. Really. Of course I'll give you those picks for Jay Cutler.
Bowlen: That's it. Throw in Orton and a 3rd and we've got a deal. Heck Jerry, I like you so much I'll even give you back a 5th (and I'm not talking about a fifth of Jack Daniels. For that you'll have to contact Kyle).
JA: That's it. That's all you want Pat?
Bowlen: That'll do it.
JA: You sure Pat? I mean I've got more stuff here. I really don't want you backtracking and changing your mind now on me. Please Pat, please!
Bowlen: I promise Jerry. He's yours. You can stop pinching yourself now. This isn't a daydream. Cutler's now a Bear. He'll be in Chicago tomorrow. You are now officially the most popular man in the Windy City!
JA: Thank you, thank you, thank you Pat. A million times over "thank you!"
Bowlen: You can stop drooling now Jerry. You're welcome! It feels good to know that I probably just saved your job. Now, just remember THAT the next time I call you!

Not Gonna Lie
That post was a horrible interpretation of what happened in the deal. It seems like what the dialogue would be if this deal was turned into a horrible B movie… if that makes sense.

LMAO.
Wrecked. Very nicely done sir.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious. (Vince Lombardi)
i don't care who you are, thats funny right there.

You know what this means Jerry, don't you?
What’s that Pat?
Bowlen: It means you won’t be able to draft another Cedric Benson for the next couple of years.
JA: OMG. At the next owners meeting Pat, it’s going to be hard for me to keep from kissing you. Really. You might want to stay on the other side of the room from me!
for some reason
i can’t see JA saying “oh my god” like a tween.

Sucker
No, he said I’m robbing you blind and then proceeded to snicker behind Bowlen’s back.

In what circumstances does an owner speak to a GM?
"It means nothing to throw for 4500 yards, 25 touchdowns, and you dont win" -Brandon Marshall
Bowlen, like Jerry Jones
basically is the Broncos GM, so it wouldn’t shock me if they did speak (though they probably didn’t).
For the record, this was just a lighthearted look at the Cutler trade hopefully good for a laugh or two.
And, (especially after reading JA’s comments to Peter King) I think it’s pretty accurate regarding Angelo’s
state of mind here.
Jerry Angelo has two goals in mind on a day to day basis: Improve the Bears and keep his job. Hopefully, any decisions he makes furthers both ends as far as Jerry’s concerned.
To me, the upside for JA in this deal dwarfs the downside. As we all know, his first round record (like a lot of GM’s) really isn’t very good. I think, more than ever, due to the huge amounts of money these 1st rounders get and the huge expectations people have about these players, it’s getting harder and harder to find great players in the first round (even though these guys are all extremely talented).
If these are the most talented guys coming out of college, how come roughly half are either busts or big underachievers?
Ex-NFL player Ross Tucker addresses that very issue (money, lack of motivation) on SI.com today.
If you’re Jerry Angelo, why not trade two #1 picks for a young, Pro-Bowl QB with a rocket arm. At least in the short term (and hopefully forever) you will be looked at as almost heroic in the Windy City. Furthermore, you spare yourself the dilemma of picking # 1’s in 2009 & 2010.
Based on Jerry’s track record in the 1st round, skipping those two picks almost has to be an added bonus for him (believe it or not).
He traded to #1’s (which half the time don’t pan out) for a proven player, for Cutler. I think for Angelo ( and the Bears) it was a no-brainer.
This was light years removed from the deal Mike Ditka did in NO (his entire draft plus next years #1 and possibly #2) for an unproven Ricky Williams.
If JA had made this trade for an aging veteran or an unproven player, I think it would be questionable.
For Cutler? I think, as I tried to jokingly point out, it was almost a complete no-brainer.
If it works, Jerry’s the GM that beat out all the other teams and made it happen. If it doesn’t, so what. After all, this is the franchise that traded a #1 for Rick Mirer. This is the franchise that just wasted a ton of money on Cedric Benson.
Like JA, I’d trade two #1’s for Cutler almost in a heartbeat.
