NightLink: Bears Sign Michael Gaines

961580665_6b095b2728_medium

The Chicago Bears have signed tight end Michael Gaines to a one year contract, according to the team site.  Gaines has good size, at 6'4 and 277 lbs.  Per this article from the Tribune last Friday, there may be plans to have Gaines line up at full back as well.  He is a former 7th round draft pick in the 2004 NFL draft.

Thoughts about this signing:

How will Gaines fit into our passing/ running game?

Does this mean more success in short yardage situations?

Will Gaines be yet another option for Jay Cutler out of the back-field?

Full back

I see him utilzed more as a full back and probably a blocking tight end. Anything is better than McKie.

Because as far as we're concerned, there is still no team in the history of the NFL that could beat the '85 Bears.

I have no idea

Besides the obvious situations at the goal-line and short-yardage, I don’t have a clue on how he’ll be utilized.

3 TE sets?

Let McKie pound it while Forte rests?

Oh goo

Stop. If I see McKie on the roster this year, I will not be a happy camper.

Isn't that what we have Jones for?

Or Garrett Wolfe, or Adrian Peterson

Pick a player that can run a football on our team and put him in over McKie.

I couldn't agree more.

Our OL isn’t the biggest and we need someone with size to create some shit.

for the second one

MSM doesn’t have an y specific ties to the Bears. They just happen to know a few people, so every video will be McKie or Wolfe.

Good question,

he looked great last pre-season, but pre-season doesn’t really tell us much.

hes got to be the odd man out

unless they plan on trading Des Clark, which I would hate to see now that we got a good qb

Yep, Clark has done too much for us to give him up.

Cutler to Clark and Olsen should look real nice this year.

Nah

But perhaps we could package up the teams artifical sweeteners (Davis’) and withhold the scientific findings showing its acutally a carcinogen.

unless the receiver we trade him for

is a better receiver then he is its not worth it. But in a package for Boldin or Edwards id be for that.

Your right, has to be a real good receiver to be worth it.

Dez is a damn good TE and it would have to be one of those guy’s.

Ya know, since we have so much talent at this position and have to give one up,

I bet the Jets will pick whoever it is up since they don’t hardly have shit at that position.

Hear about the blind hooker, you gotta hand it to her.

by Bears fan 4-ever!!! on May 11, 2009 7:23 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed...

all they have at TE is Keller. Since they are bringing in a young QB, Sanchez, and expecting him to play as a rookie they will need some reliable receivers. And since they say a good TE is a the best friend of a young QB, it would be wise for them to get some more help. Specifically, since their WR core is not that great with the loss of Coles. So we might be able to trade Dez for a 2nd or 3rd round pick next year. Or we could trade them Davis for a later pick, rather than dropping him.

Great Signing

Finally, a TE that can seal! Kellen Davis is toast. He can’t play special teams, he can’t block, and when it comes to catching, Olsen and Clark make it look like he has two left hands. We waste a lot of picks on buffed/athletic “potential”.

by pete banachi on May 11, 2009 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

Versatility

he can play FB and TE so the Bears save a position. Thay wont need to have Jason Davis as the backup FB this year, as insurance in case McKie gets injured. He should see a lot of goalline and short yardage situations.

by gillrowdy on May 11, 2009 11:14 PM CDT reply actions

This signing makes me very very happy

And versatilty is a big reason. Can you picture a 6’4’’ 277lb behemoth crashing down on goaline situations or whoops, fanning out and catching the quick goaline out pattern. I am just curious who the odd man out is now. One thing i know is it probably won’t be Mckie.

by Chitownproduct on May 12, 2009 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions

His Versatility

Is a pretty big deal..I really like the signing, help seal the edge on the line or clearing the way for Forte. Nevermind how much that helps in goal line situations.Awesome,I’m getting excited.

by IslandBoodler87 on May 12, 2009 8:20 AM CDT reply actions

Good signing

Gaines provides a solid run blocking presence on the offensive line and has the versatility to be able to be used creatively at time by Ron Turner. I like this signing a great deal. And I think Matt Forte and Kevin Jones will like it a lot too.

by BLou on May 12, 2009 9:37 AM CDT reply actions

Regardless of him being signed

Gaines still has to make the final roster, let’s not forget this everybody so you can’t necessarily start wondering who is going to be the next guy out. And I’m sorry to burst everyones’ bubble but McKie isn’t going anywhere.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on May 12, 2009 12:48 PM CDT reply actions

Based on Lovie's conversations with Gaines,

and the fact that we were in a competition with the Jets for his services, I don’t think there is any doubt he makes the final cut.

And I hope you are as wrong as dipping cheese into melted chocolate about McKie.

Why can't we get rid of McKie?

He’s not a sacred cow!!!

Does he have blackmail on JA, Lovie, or one of the McCaskey’s, because if not I don’t think his 2008 “performance” should be enough to gaurantee a roster spot.

Unreasonable people make life difficult...

by WisBearsFan34 on May 12, 2009 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt

that he wouldn’t make the roster over Kellin Davis,or the backup FB.I think there’s too much practicality involved with this signing,in regards to having help on the blocking front.
