Let's Sign Plaxico.
via silentarchimedes.files.wordpress.com
The way things are looking we could easily be going into our 09' season with a group of unproven receivers. I am okay with this because I believe Cutler can make these young receivers quite productive especially with the other threats of Clark, Olsen, and Forte. In the mean time, why not sign Plaxico or at least bring him in for a visit and let him know that we are interested in his services once his legal matters have been fulfilled. I severely doubt that he will be sentenced to any jail time and if we have to wait until the middle or late season to finally be able to get him on the field, then so be it. If we are going to go without picking up any other veteran WR in free agency and play our drafted WRs and Bennett anyway then I can only see positives from a move like this. The guy can play, he's a big threat with great hands and with him on the field our offense would be extremely potent. Maybe we could even get a decent price for him with all his current troubles. I would be very satisfied with picking him up and waiting to use him until he was available, what do you think?

if the price is right I could see it… but I think Plaxico wil want big money

I'm not into it
and here is why. Plaxico is one of, if not, the most physically gifted receivers in the NFL. He has had opportunity with the steelers and giants. Probably two of the top 3 or 4 best ran organizations in football, both have let him leave. I really believe if Plaxico couldn’t be an overall success at those two stops, he wouldn’t be in Chicago either.

I hear you and thats a good point but
maybe him shooting himself in the leg was the straw that broke the camel’s back in this case. He’s going to have to go through the court system and an NFL suspension (I assume) and maybe he actually learned his lesson. Learning from mistakes doesn’t seem to be a popular route for NFL players unfortunately.

Not exactly the same.

I've been around since November 08'
It’s up to you if you want to change it though, it’s not something that really bothers me.

Exactly,
for what ever reason that it is. Maybe they think that rules or laws don’t apply to them. Maybe they surround themselves with all the wrong folks. Probably a combination of many things, but players just don’t learn from the mistakes they make.
learning?
Some are just too arrogant to learn or just too stupid. I haven’t decided which Burress is, but I suspect it is both.

The Bears have gotten rid of players who
have had off field issues less than what Plax had. It would be pretty hypocritical of them to sign him.
Being Who You Thought We Were Since 2005!
Agreed.
After the Cutler trade and all the offseason acquisitions so far, I feel like a “win now” mentality is evident. Although it is a long shot, I can see the benefits of it if he actually turned his life around and acted like a pro. I doubt that it is highly probable that it could happen, but I thought the same about getting Jay.

I think we should wait on a FA WR.
Let’s see how Cutler and who we have now pan out. If we need a WR next year then we should address the problem then.
Hear about the blind hooker, you gotta hand it to her.

Here's the thing.
and if we have to wait until the middle or late season to finally be able to get him on the field, then so be it.
That would be giving a roster spot to a player who is undoubtedly going to get a suspension from the league. Be that 4 games, or 8 no one knows. But, if we picked Plax up, he wouldn’t be able to participate with the team once he gets his suspension handed down.
And teams aren’t going to make any moves for him until they find out how many games he will be out. In theory, he could miss the first half of the season, and finally be able to start working out with his teammates in November… that isn’t a very enticing scenario.

I hear you there.
Roster spots are important. That’s why I was thinking if they signed him now he could be worth the roster spot if he could be studying the playbook and familiarizing himself with Cutler and other teammates in the meantime. Although, I don’t know if he would even be allowed to be with a team that signed him until his legal troubles are fulfilled.

Plaxico is going to prison and facing maybe a 1 year NFL suspension
Why exactly would Chicago want to sign him? In order to have first in line privileges during visitation day at prison?
No. Not going to happen. Move on.
Actually Plaxico
will go to Jail not Prison and no they are not the same. He shot himself in the leg which at worst will get him 3-4 in county. They don’t send people who shoot themselves in the leg to prison.
Because as far as we're concerned, there is still no team in the history of the NFL that could beat the '85 Bears.

What's the difference?
Plaxico is facing incarceration AND a lengthy NFL suspension.
Prison and Jail are not the same that's the difference
All I was saying is he’s not going to end up in Prison. Do you really need me to break down why Jail and Prison are not the same?
Because as far as we're concerned, there is still no team in the history of the NFL that could beat the '85 Bears.

Huh?
Jail and prison mean the same thing…Plaxico is behind bars and therefore won’t be training or in practice or on the football field.
Well Technically
They’re not.But for the sake of your argument I understand.

Now go…………

jail vs prison
Arguing that jail and prison are not the same thing is nitpicking. Whether he is in jail or prison is irrelevant, eitherw ay he is not available to play.

Jail time
The statistics in the state of NY say he’s going to jail for at least a short period of time.

4. Plaxico Burress, WR: The former Super Bowl hero faces legal woes that threaten to derail his 2009 season, but Burress could be coveted once his case — and the impending suspension from the league — is resolved. As a big, athletic playmaker with a penchant for playing well in important games, Burress is the top target that playoff contenders could look to down the stretch.
Possible landing spots: Jets or Bears
5. Amani Toomer, WR: The crafty pass catcher has quietly amassed 668 receptions in his 13-year career. Although he lacks the speed and explosiveness to be a No. 1 receiver at 34, Toomer’s experience and dependability would boost any passing game. Teams looking to add a top-notch possession receiver will likely make a play for Toomer in the coming weeks.
Possible landing spot: Bears
I'll take my chances with Toomer
There is zero % chance Plaxico Burress becomes a Chicago Bear. In addition to his obvious legal and suspension issue I can’t in a million years seeing the McCaskey family signing off on a such a move. Jerry Angelo has done a good job of getting rid of the cancers (e.g., Tank Johnson, Ced Benson). No way the Bears go after another.
This post sums it up right there
Even if he doesnt do any time or get a suspension, the mere fact of what he did is enough for the Bears not to sign him. They let Tank go for unregistered guns, they led Benson go for drinking and boating and drinking and driving. You think Virginia and Ted would even consider letting JA get Plax for firing a loaded gun into an establishment full of people?
Cowboys, Bengals, Raiders maybe…Bears No.

Umm...no
I’d rather the Bears go after someone who isn’t going to get thrown in jail for shooting himself in the foot (literally and figuratively)
he shot himself in the leg, buddy. literally.

Mmmmmmm ....
Let’s see. The Bears need/would like to have a vet receiver around, to teach, to mentor, to catch the ball …. and you suggest installing a guy who discharges a firearm into himself in a nightclub.
“I can only see positives from a move like this” …. until he accidentally shoots Cutler or Olsen in the face in a strip club. Then we really will need Forte.
by Irish Bears Fan on May 15, 2009 4:18 AM CDT reply actions
Wow. Is that really your argument?
And if Plax shot Cutler or Olsen in the face would you then automatically think how much we need Forte? Does Forte make up for a QB?
by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on May 15, 2009 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions
I wouldn't mind Plaxico as a bear
We have a guy like Cutler that can put him in his place. If not Cutler, then Urlacher, Briggs, Ogun, or Kruetz.
