Are the Bears Interested in Burress? Angelo: "No."

Much ado about nothing: mainstream media style.  Before the 2009 NFL Draft, Bears GM Jerry Angelo stated that the Bears were not interested in the services of Plaxico Burress.

Since then, our favorite media outlets have spun a wild-eyed web of rumors that, after several weeks, has seemingly raised some eyebrows as to whether the Bears actually might be interested in Burress.  I mean, after all, Angelo himself said that the Bears were monitoring the situation with Plax... how could that possibly not be interpreted that the Bears wanted to sign him?

May 17th, 2009: "Hey Jerry, Drew Rosenhaus said that 2 NFL teams are serious about Plax... what's up with that?"

"Are we one of those two teams? No," Angelo said.  "We are very comfortable with the receivers that we have."

Of course, any General Manager worth his salt will always say that they will constantly evaluate every option that is available, and with the Bears having a ton of cap space, we could certainly afford to add another quality WR to our roster.  But, I wouldn't hold my breath for another addition... something tells me that we have who we think we will have going into the 2009 season.

Are you comfortable with not adding another WR to our roster?

Plaxico was never going to happen in Chicago

People try to latch onto every single saying or non-saying of GMs, coaches, agents, etc. Good of Angelo to end this garbage speculation in the media. Plaxico Burress to Chicago was NEVER going to happen. Plaxico is headed for jail followed by a lengthy NFL suspension. No way, no how the McCaskeys were going to sign off on something like that. And good for them.

haha its all good.

Its actually kind of amusing how we can end up with 2 completely different stories by using different pull quotes. The joys of subjective journalism.

Fine with me..

Seriously, do you see Plax coming into Chicago and being part of a championship run?

Until he receives his sentence,

no one will touch him or even show interest. Unless he pleas out and agrees to PSA’s and a billion hours of community service and a fine plus a “hefty” donation to the the DA’s campaign fund, he’s probably going to get some time in the pokey. No GM will take a chance…yet.

by MuleTrain on May 18, 2009 2:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

No chance with existing WRs

If the Bears want Cutler to develop into an elite QB, they need to find much better receivers. A couple of playmakers with speed, size, and hands. Our receivers don’t come close to fitting that description. Stay away from Plaxico!

The waiting is the hardest part

I hate to quote Tom Petty (not a big fan), but speculation is useless with Buress cause he’s going to get sentenced with some kind of jail term. Until then, it’s the same old media garbage recycled over and over again.

Are You Serious

Plaxico is the best big WR in the game, any team that would not sign him after his legal situation is done, should give a refund all season ticket holders…they are not interested in wnning…

Plax is NOT the best big WR in the game (welcome BTW)

I put Calvin Johnson on the top of that list. Followed by
Fitz
Moss
T.O.
Vincent Jackson
Plax

by ifuwannacrownem on May 18, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

Good list, I’ve never really considered Moss a traditional big receiver for some reason. I guess he is though?

by Fridge72 on May 18, 2009 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Say What !!!!! (Thanks for the Welcome)

Calvin Johnson is all potential, has never been to a Pro Bowl, he has to do something to establish some cred…Fitz is close, I mean real close, but winning gives Plax the edge…Moss is not big, he is tall, and fast…Vincent Jackson does not belong on this list…

Megatron has lived up to his Hype. unfortunately, he's done it on a crappy Lions team.

Just look at the numbers he posted while playing on an 0-16 team with 5 starting QBs(the only reason he didn’t make it to the pro bowl) Had he been playing on even a Mediocre offense like jaguars, He’d be looked at as the best player of the ’07 draft class(a class that includes AP)

VJ

There’s no way he should be placed ahead of Plax as a big WR.

Matt Jones

My last post disappeared, maybe my naughty word got me in trouble.

Anyways, What about Matt Jones?! Not saying he’s the answer, but a 6’6’’ receiver to go with all the midgets we have would be nice.

by Life as a G on May 18, 2009 4:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for rephrasing it.

Matt Jones had all the potential in the world… I used to love watching him at Ark, and thought he had a ton of potential to make the conversion to WR in the pros. Unfortunately, he fizzled… and all of his off field antics seem to express that he just never got serious about football.

Welcom to the blog G.

Jones

Well said, but I would still be okay with him on the Bears. I need to replace this Orton jersey with some other party animal….why not Matt Jones?

by Life as a G on May 18, 2009 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I think Matt Jones definitely deserves another chance, even with the Bears. People are condemning him for violating his parole by drinking a beer while playing golf. Not nearly as bad as shooting yourself in the leg…

by HanelucaTC on May 18, 2009 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think anyone is condemning him for drinking a beer.

But his track record does not seem to indicate that he is interested in making football a top priority in his life.

His attitude is beside the point, the fact is he's not a good receiver.

We already have one “project” at WR with Hester, why would an ex-QB who didn’t make it as a WR with the team that drafted him be an upgrade for us? I would like to see a veteran, like McCareins, come in to help mentor this young group rather than a guy who potentially is a distraction and a bad influence who hasn’t learned the position himself yet. All of those things together are just way too much baggage, in my opinion.

Also, I wouldn’t say no to giving Jones a 1 year shot and dump off one of our recievers..the dropapotamous perhaps?

I thought he got caught chopping lines in his car.

He's too much of a stopgap...

He would only be a 1 year fix for this team..maybe 2 at the most, plus he’s most likely going to miss the first 4-8 games with the way the new commish has been cracking down on wrongdoers in the league. So Plax is not worth the media circus just to bring in a guy who may be the 5-7thish best receiver in the league. Id rather see how our new prospects pan out and work the rest of that cap money toward extensions for guys like Izzy, and/or a FS if one happens to suddenly fall from the sky into free agency.

Can Jerry even name our receivers?

Hester…Um…I forget…
